Description

J & J's eighty-ninth geocache hide. A small cache overlooking the Myponga Water Treatment Plant.

Myponga is a concrete arch dam with a ski-jump spillway. It was completed in 1962.

When the pipeline from the dam was being built, one worker had a lucky escape. He was working inside the pipe, about 150 m downstream of the dam. There was a sudden rock-slide and he and the pipe were buried. When the debris was cleared away, the worker was found unhurt.

Before the Myponga Water Treatment Plant was built in 1993, water from Myponga was used to supplement the Happy Valley Reservoir.

Capacity: 26,800 megalitres.

If this reservoir supplied the whole state, how long would this last? Almost 46 days (45.8 days).

Area of water spread: 280 hectares.

Public access: No. There is however a look-out available on the roadside that is available 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

In SA for a couple of days to pick up LuckyL10n's car after a major meltdown a few weeks ago. On the road in we detoured over to grab this one. Cache was found without issue and is in great condition. Log was signed, cache returned to its hidey hole and we were back on the road.

Thanks J_&_J for the cache and reason to stop. Hope all is going well.

#GA5679 - 12:55; Arrived in Adelaide this morning with Sol de lune and now headed via the long route to Victor Harbour to collect my geomobile after its recent operation. Made the turn before we reached Myponga and managed a quick find at GZ. Added our names to the log and continued on a bit further to take in more of the local views. TFTC J_&_J Very Happy

Down around Yankalilla for the morning so took the opportunity to find a few new caches that have gone out since my last visit to the area Mr. Green

This cache was a nice easy find along a scenic road, that is once I managed to de-cobweb it!

Bit of a tricky spot to find a safe stop on the side of the road but a careful check linked to the clue led us to our first cache of the day. Beautiful spot to stop and have a look around down at the lookout further below.

Today we hoped to be able to find five dragonZone caches and give us one more day of the month with 50 finds. After successfully finding the new Adelaide History tour cache we made our way towards Myponga. We enjoyed the views from the hills particularly the section where the fog was rolling down the slopes giving a really eerie effect.

We had little trouble locating the cache container as the coordinates were spot on and the hint useful. The container and contents were in very good condition. We were surprised to find a pristine log book as the cache had been published almost two months ago. Thus a second {FTF} for us today at 13:25.

Thanks for this cache J_&_J the views from this section of the coast are certainly worth a visit
