Description

Released during the GA 2018 Augmented Reality Geocache Competition

The physical cache is not at the published coordinates, it is a significant distance south of here

Some background

It is rumoured that Captain Thunderbolt hid a treasure during one of his forays into the southern districts whilst visiting family near his birthplace, but the location was believed to have been lost when he was shot dead in Uralla on 25 May 1870 by Constable Alexander Walker during a highway robbery. Reports began to surface in 2018 that the ghost of Thunderbolt will appear to those who are up for a challenge. It is said that during these apparitions Thunderbolt will guide you through a mind maze. If you are one of the lucky few you may end up finding the key to Thunderbolt's treasure and find the correct path to salvation, or else you will end up lost in the twisted entanglement of Thunderbolt's Maze.

This particular Augmented Reality (AR) geocache will allow the geocacher to puzzle through the mind of Thunderbolt from any location of your choosing, but will ultimately require you to visit the final location where you will find a regular sized sistema container and a logbook for you to sign. Within the pages of the log you will also find the codewood which you will need in order to log this cache online.

Are you ready for a challenge?

Note: The AR experience is not location specific and can be run from any location.

When this one came out I followed what was needed to run the app and navigated around the maze but the app wouldn't let me use the found item so I gave up.
Earlier this week I tried again and this time I was able to use the item and find relevant coordinates for GZ.

Despite cache coordinates being a long way from home I found GZ to be not as far away. Today after my usual morning op shop duties I went for a drive to GZ. There I surveyed the surroundings and decided on a path to GZ. I found the log dry to sign before replacing as found tftc

Played the game when it first came out but it took a few goes till Captain Thunderbolt released his information about where his treasure may be hidden. Organised an afternoon raid with alnic39 to come and find the treasure.

Got near GZ & parked behind Al's yesmobile and saw him like the hint "yes he is up there"

So we signed the log and replaced as found

Thanks for the first GA Augmented Reality cache. It'll take a bit getting used to these types of caches with old smart products

I am not going to claim the first to find on this one because the PHL app did all the work that my =sad little ancient iphone could not. It gave me the coordinates that I needed and led me the to even the best parking spot. What a great app! I waited for Sir Phil to arrive by reading over my report comments that are due tomorrow...but I got antsy! The hint said that it was "up there" and I had dreaded that hint...but looking at it, I thought, "I don't need help with navigation! I can traverse that!" So, with a modicum of guilt, I followed the GPS up and found the cache. I didn't dare open it. I had to wait for the brave Sir Knight to arrive. I had to ask for his permission to open the prize and sign the relevant names. I mean...this was not just any ordinary cache....it was an augmented reality cache (whatever the hell that means), and it could very well be the first of its kind. How could I be the one to claim first to find when the PHL app had done all the work. All this being said, phlphotos is the true FTF on this one. He should go down in history for his contribution to the art of geocaching.

Found my way through the maze of Thunderbolt just too far away!

After much researching, followed by some trial and error and then a total rethink, we have come up with something a bit different to celebrate the new AR cache type.
