Description

Lookout over Langwarrin

This cache will take you to some of my favorite spots in The Pines Flora & Fauna Reserve.

Keep your eyes open and you will see many species of flora and fauna.
In spring wildflowers abound with many already flowering.
Notably Victoria's Floral Emblem: Epacris impressa - Pink (Common) Heath.

Many birds, amphibians and insects make their home here in the reserve.
Swamp Wallabies may be seen at dawn and dusk and you may even spot an Echidna or two.

The Pines

Frankston North is nicknamed The "Pines" because of the former Australian Defence Force/Ministry of Housing "Pines Forest Estate" which made up the bulk of the suburb. In order to pay homage to the name Pines have been planted across the suburb during 2016/2017.

Houses are a mixture of low scale dwellings set in gardens. The streetscape is generally open due to the low horizontal building forms and low or open style fencing. Buildings and homes are predominantly 1960s-1970s Housing Commission of Victoria homes made of conite, fibro rendering with some contemporary styling added by the renovation. Sealed roads have kerbs and footpaths on both sides of the street. Trees are medium to large and planted irregularly in streets.

The Cache

At the posted coordinates you will need to gather some information.

"Welcome to The Pines Flora & Fauna Reserve"

"Research Legacy" - Year mentioned = ABCD
"Bushland Home" - Year the Freeway opened = FGHJ
"Explore Nature" - The reserve covers = KLM hectares
"A Long History" - A sand mine was proposed in the = NPQRs
K+L = T
F+J = U
B-H = V

Now, walk HTM metres to the west and then follow Boundary Track south up to TP4260

Stand on the concrete base and look out to the east, NRU degrees.
You will see a structure, FCL metres away - walk there.
(Note: The shortest distance between two points is rarely ever a straight line.)

Note the Emergency Marker "NPP" Number Here = WXY
F+W = Z

Enjoy the view and then project another waypoint.
WUC degrees HUZ metres.

This will bring you to a smaller trail.
Turn down this track on a bearing of:
WFQ degrees for RUT metres.

You are now at ground zero.

The final lookout has a seat that faces south over Karingal and Langwarrin.
Enjoy the scenery. I suggest returning along the Panoramic route.

A nice walk through the area to collect a couple of GCA caches. The final location was very nice (as was the walk around the area), but the cache was just that little bit tricky. I looked once, twice and then on the third (proper look) I came up trumps. The cache is a little mucky on the outside, as expected, but all is well on the inside. I left my log and headed off to find a few more in the area. Thanks for this one n0w0rries.

I'm not usually a fan of multiple, but the number of physical geocaches within reach to be abke to play the cachopoly game was limited. so I found the time today.

I came in tragically underprepared. but with a phone, a pen and a single piece of paper I pushed on. collected all the info and my stumbling block came to the projection. but with a bit of phone compass work I was able to get myself to go.

initial search yielded no results... I panicked. I saw another suspect that matched the hint, nothing. 1 last look from a different angle at the original spot and finally spotted something that looked hopeful. alas the cache was found. phew, sigh of relief. I enjoyed the views and the journey. thanks.

Following the statement from the Victorian Premier announcing a Level 2 Shutdown due to COVID - 19, I have decided to temporarily disable this geocache.
I will review this decision on a regular basis over the coming weeks / months and reassess it as needs be.
Stay safe everyone, see you on the other side.

I haven't found a physical GCA cache for several years. But I happened to notice this previously unfamiliar icon on the map a few days ago and seeing as I (as a swag item in this cache put it) "love a good multi" I couldn't help dropping in while nearby. It's a very familiar area but navigating around it with a bunch projections promised to be fun. And so it was. The final such projection put me a few metres away from the cache (small error on my behalf, I now see), but sufficiently close that deciphering the hint led swiftly to a "oh, just over *there*!" type situation. The cache was soon found in good condition with a pristine log sheet. Thanks again n0w0rries!
