Description
This embankment was built in 1892 to extend the LKR from Lancefield to Kilmore. The drain under the 5 span bridge floods in heavy rain: the filled-in single span bridge allowed vehicles access to a firewood siding in the Lancefield railway station yard.
A railway line was opened from present-day Clarkfield to Lancefield in 1881, and the line was ontroversially extended to Kilmore in 1892. There were five intermediate stations, and the new Lancefield Town Station was built behind the Macedonia Hotel. The LKR always ran at a loss, and was closed in 1897. However, it was re-opened briefly in 1900, but was finally closed down in 1903. Wikipedia tells us "This was one of the most infamous white elephant late-nineteenth century Victorian rail projects. . .
The LKR was not only expensive because it had to climb the Lancefield Gap on the Great Dividing Range, but due to the steepness of the topography, it meandered to Kilmore across almost uninhabited land with little or no passenger custom, or freight use. . .".
Read more about it in A Pictorial Guide to the Long Lost Lancefield and Kilmore Railway book, available from the Romsey and Lancefield Districts Historical Society Inc. and at www.romseylancefieldhistorical.com.au or email [email protected]

Thanks LKR....a neat little series of caches showing off a few interesting areas...even with the rain preventing us have a good look around. LuckyL10n has co-ords to add to this log.
The first of the day and no luck although, now we have done a few in the series and are more acquainted with your style, it is perhaps worth a second look on another day.
