Description

Nice easy walk along the Leven River

A tranquil, easy walk along a section of the Penguin Cradle Trail beside the Leven River through State Forest/Forest Reserve. As such you can take your dog for a walk with you. Most of this section is along a benched formation of an old tramway.

The walk will take you past 'Leven Bend' GA1255, tall white gums, Manferns and Swordfern 'gardens'. The track is open to mountainbikers. Motorbikes are not supposed to use this track but obviously do.

Follow parking and access directions as per 'Leven Bend' if coming in from north. If coming in from the south, park at end of Purtons Rd. just before bridge crossing Hardstaff Crk. Walk across bridge and up road, come to a sign sending you right down along a fenceline to the Leven River.

Cache is a black 200mml Sistema with log book and stash note (and pencil when I get back there, sorry, poor planning).

Found in the company of DEZ055. We couldn't have picked a better day than the first day of winter to tackle the Penguin Cradle Trail. I have been wanting to walk this trail for a long time. I have walked parts of the trail previously. This is my first attempt in walking from the Penguin end through to Hardstaff Creek. Well the legs are well and truly cooked today, but mission accomplished after walking roughly 23kms. We have completed all of the caches so far in this series.

This one was bit dangerous to get as you have to negotiate your way along the edge of the bank that has been partly washed away. The ground was wet and all it would have taken is one wrong step and your fate would be on the rocks approximately 6 metres below. The cache was soaked all the way through, but didn't stop us from signing the log. TFTC Clan Cerberus

Today with the company of Trimbletas we completed the penguin to cradle track series and and a few others. We found 25 caches along the way with only 1 that we didn’t find. We majorly underestimated how long this walk would take from the start to hardstaff creek, there was a lot of challenges along the way. Once we finally made it to hardstaff creek we had to make a decision do we try to go out via the farm at purtons flats (we knew the farmer) or do we walk back. When we got back to where the pct track went off the gravel road we thought whether to go back along the river or to follow the gravel road out to dial road, decision was made to walk the gravel road back to dial road and have someone pick us up to take us back to the car at the start. The hill up from the pct track was brutal but once we got up it it was fairly easy walking till we had to climb up to dial road. Overall was a long but enjoyable day really had a great time completing this series.

The log where this was located was super slippery so cation had to be taken so we didn't slip off ledge into the river.

Oops, we headed up the stairs but realized we needed to be down on the old tram track level to get this one so we made an about face and went back. We found it quick enough then back up those damn stairs again. Thanks geoskid

One of several caches we found on the PCT trail today. We enjoyed the walk beside the Leven River and the colourful fungi we saw on the way was a bonus. Thanks for bringing us to this part of the trail and for the cache.

Great day for a walk along the old tram track entering from the northern end of track.Amazing to see all the work that the old timers put in carving through the rock sections of the track and the old sleepers hanging out over the drop to the river.tftc Geoskid

Our search for this cache was going to be from Purtons Bridge but this structure was washed away so our walk was to start from Kiddies Creek. Time was short so we ran up the track and were amazed by the variety of fungi and birdlife we were able to see on the way. The cache was easily found and we signed the log sitting on the repair work made to the track that must have been necessary after the floods in January.
Thanks Geoskid for these caches, the trail that they are on is well worth exploring...we are eagerly organizing a canoeing trip down the river.

It was a very pleasant afternoon for a walk along the banks of the Leven River. The river was flowing quite swiftly, there were many birds calling and, thankfully, no motorbikes to destroy the serenity. A quick find once at GZ. TFTC

What better way to spend a roster day off than walking this trail. Wish we had planned a bit better and arranged a pick up at Purtons Flats as we would have liked to keep going. Walked past cache and had to retrace our steps but once we got back to the spot it was an easy find. Thanks.

First of all this was fantastic!
I came from the southern end and like hookline's experience, getting to the start wasn't completely straightforward. After crossing the bridge over the Leven (where the Lets Go Fishing #3 cache is), there is a sign saying Private Property. But Purtons Rd does continue on (according to map) veering slightly left and up and over the hill. But then you get to a definite shut gate wiht a proper sign saying "Private Rd, Person's wishing to access the propery should seek permission from RS Purton 6225 1286". I knocked at the house and the lady was very friendly and confirmed all that and gave me permission to continue on. So that was great and off I went. It was a really pleasant walk, the track beside the Leven is really lovely. I started to jog a bit, as I was fearing running out of daylight, as I hadn't left till 4pm. I loved the cache's hidey hole and it was nice and dry.
I would thoroughly recommend this cache, it's a gorgeous walk. Thanks geoskid.

Found on a walk from Penguin to Gunns Plains. Only glad that the chainsaw had done the work on the large tree and I didn't have to climb over it.

Ugh, sooo hooot!! Thought it would be somewhat cooler and pleasant walking alongside the river in the shade of the ferns and trees, but it wasn't, the shadows being only slightly more bearable than the insanely blazing sun. Arrived at the Purton's road end, coming to a bewildering confluence of gravelly farm roads and Private Property signs and was totally lost for a moment before seeking directions from a local who'd been swimming in the river. She pointed us down one of the roads, which led to a locked gate and another Private Property sign. It all looked a bit dubious, but thankfully a nice lady from the farmhouse noticed us loitering around and opened the gate for us, letting us walk through her property.

Cache found easily thanks to the excellent clue (thankfully, since we lost GPS reception). Then it was on to Leven Bend, all the while searching for a suitable place to get into the river...

Onward from cache..leven Bend. The old tramway sure makes for easy walking. Magic trail running beside the Leven River...fishermans paradise I expect....I must come back. Cache easy to hand...many thanks geoskid. Only 1hr to here...plenty of time left...as only 10:18...so a quick jaunt through to Hardstaff Ck. Great camping spot here...saw a 1kg trout near the bridge. Still plenty of time left and keen on doing some more of the PCT...so off up to Lorymer Lookout. Quite a climb up to here..checked my cache....and magic views once again...and just on 3 hrs to here. Did quite a bit of track cleaning both ways...superb day. Back tracked to end of Dial road...running into F/Feralz on the way in...had a great chinwag. This certainly was a fantastic caching experience...so many thanks again geoskid...awesome to say the least. BTW...left a pencil in this cache as well. Cheers.
