Description

This cache will take you to a very non descript area for some.....but certainly not for me.

The area below the cache...where you've no doubt parked...was actually a bustling forestry campsite(South Arthur Camp). In it's heyday it would of

housed around 26 workers when full. It was also where I was taken to start work as a 17 yr old...as a Survey Assistant almost 38 years ago. While it

may seem inhospitable now...for me it was a childhood dream...getting to explore the surrounding bush land...locating Forest roads...and going to

places no other person had ever been. Needless to say....many a great fishing and lobster spots were found. The comradeship among us all was pretty

special.

The camp itself was quite modern with a Cat diesel generator running 24/7...the kitchen and mess hall second to none...as was the food. I guess the

winter months were the worst....as it has a  180-200 cm rainfall.....so a copious amount of card playing was usually the go...along with the same

amount of tinnies of course. So we looked forward to the summer days where more often than not,  after tea heading up the bank to where the cache

is to practice our cricket skills. This slab of concrete is basically the only tangible evidence of what existed here. So for me...the first four years of my

working life and lots of fantastic memories. Rather ironic that geocaching has now brought me back.

The cache is a black 200ml sistema with logbook and pencil only.

Enjoy!

While in the area we stopped to locate this cache. As you said, nothing remains of what you described as a bustling camp, sad. Mr W headed off through the cutting grass to locate. TFTC

exploring the area so took a quick detour to check this out, sadly so little to see left tftc

On the third day of my caching expedition on the north west coast and had this on my list to find but inadvertently drove past and had to back track. The area is certainly overgrown since it was a work camp. I didn't see the cricket pitch until on my way back to my vehicle. Thank you Sirius Tas for the cache and the information you provided as to why it was located here.

I was in a rush to get to an event last time I was in the area so it was good to be back and find this cache. Thanks

A fascinating spot and it looks like others know about it as we spotted quite a bit of unearthed metal junk left by someone metal detecting. A very warm afternoon and was glad not to come across any critters around here. TFTC!

We were heading North back towards Smithton and we turned off have a look for this one, passed the broken yellow gate so we knew we wouldnt get locked in Very Happy

So Tazscout drove along Holder road which is unpaved but was in good condition, she managed to park within about 50m of groundzero, it was a bit of a bush bash thru the waist high regrowth and this is when we spotted our chance for a game of cricket, having forgot to bring the gear we just had to look at it and go WTF!!

I had loaded the PQ onto my device but it had missed the listing so we didnt know what the story was until later that day.

The cache was spotted, well its location anyway, after moving its camo I got a stick and removed all the spider webs from what looked to be a wolf spider, after a bit if a dig we had the cache in hand and soon added our names to the log book which was in perfect condition.

Thanks for a great little cache in an interesting place.

Thought I'd logged this one but obviously the reception out here is a bit spotty.

Cache despidered and signed.

No cricket played! Think we would have lost too many balls!! Bush bashed our way to the cache which was found quickly once at GZ. Container was full of water so we emptied it and dried it out as best we could with some tissues. Thanks.

Hi sirius
Finished finding TP5611 by accident on the way to this cache. Kept on the same road which took me via God Knows Where!!!
The bush drive was incredible though and heaps of fun in the little Toyota. When I eventually got back on bitumen; I crossed Tayetea Bridge which I noticed had a cache near it. That cache was found quickly.
Up the road from there to yours. Enjoyed the area. Soon had the cache in hand after a short walk through the bush. The cache was almost buried but found it I did.
The log was Sainted at 1210hrs.
Thanks for this one; gets top marks just for the fun I had getting there.
Cheers OldSaint.

Decided to have a look for this one, mainly because of the pathtag that urch left on a tree... and er, the cache of course, yes... Um, well as it turned out we found both! GZ was way in the bush; it seemed extremely unlikely that it had been muggled. However, a cursory search and poke around produced nothing, and it did seem like there was no cache there. But some persistent digging by my partner unearthed the cache! It was buried deep under dirt and rotting wood, no surprise that urch couldn't find it. The contents were very damp but still signable. I regret that there was no way of drying it out in the drizzly weather... We moved the cache to a different hollow of the same tree that wasn't rotting away so much, with a big rock on top of it, so it should be dead easy for the next finder. I took urch's cool pathtag and left one of my own in the cache. Thanks Sirius and urch!

Sadly I think this has gone AWOL.

Came in from the north with the Tayatea Bridge now OPEN for business! Searched all round gz, checked hint and searched again, but am pretty sure that some critter or other may have made off with the loot. And sadly I didnt have any replacement with me, so left my pathtag on a low branch of the tree as a calling card and hope that will suffice to get me a smiley for this cache, sirius Tas.

Hard to believe what used to be here we enjoyed visiting this area on our Wild West loop today. Have visited this region before but caching makes it much more interesting. The roads have improved but a little slippery in places. Thanks for the memories and the cache.

Fastastic spot, albeit a little snakey on the day i was in there. Thanks for this one, really fasinating to see mother nature taking back her own. Cheers

Many thanks 2y'stassies for the cache maintenance. It's certainly amazing how quickly the scrub grows back and reclaims cleared areas...and there certainly were plenty of cries of 'Ball' as they disappeared into the surrounding undergrowth never to be seen again....Cheers.

Once near GZ, a quick find was made. The bush is certainly reclaiming the area but we found the concrete pitch. Work with a brush cutter would be needed to get a run up, a lot more if there were to be no cries of "lost ball". There was some water in the container (drianed it out) but the log was dry. Thanks for the cache and for brining us to this area.

Darn - if only that Tayatea Bridge was up ... wouldn't be such a long drive. So, had to go the long way round. Found no probs once we were there. TN, L eraser, SL. TFTC

I love the places caching takes you. It's the main reason we do it.Found with half of Yin and Yan. We looked around for a while looking for some kind of evidence of what used to be here but it's amazing how fast the bush reclaims. Pity about the bridge being out cant quite understand why it hasn't been fixed after 2 years? TNLN

really enjoyed the rally driving from the previous cache to this one. Found the cache easily and also the leech! Cache in excellent condition.
Thanks for showing me the old camp.

I was prepared before I went and looked for this cache. Plotted the location on the map and all. Took the map with me. If I had not, I would not have found it. Lovely drive through the rain, with my GPSr on arrival giving an accuracy of 25metres, due to cloud, rain, and vegetation. A good look quickly found the Cricket Pitch, and onto the cache. A nice easy find. Why has it taken so long for a FTF? TNLNSL Thanks for the cache. The drive alone was worth it.
