Description
An easy find at Kathala Pass Rest Area just off the Eyre Highway 3 Km West of Mundrabilla Roadhouse.
Due to the temporary nature of pens and pencils in my geocaches
BRING YOUR OWN WRITING IMPLEMENT!!!
I wandered by on day 179 of a 6 month trip Wandering Australia, and after refuelling at Mundrabilla Roadhouse I pulled off the road to the tanks for probably the twelth or more time in the past 42 years, but this time I was there to place a cache.
I've placed this and several other caches along the Eyre Highway to encourage cachers to take regular breaks from the monotonous driving. At this spot you can camp for the night or just take a driver reviver break. Facilities include water, tables, shade and rubbish bins.
The cache is a 900 ml clear Decor container inside a grey plastic bag, hidden a short walk from the tanks. Initial contents are First and Second To Find cards, finders cards, fly/mosquito head net, 5 ring key ring with blue LED light, Aus dolphin key ring, Australia indigenous art badge, whale, ram, two sheets of stickers, log book, pen, pencil & sharpener.
When trading items please consider trading up or trading even and leaving items that you would want to find, and please don't take the pen, pencils or sharpener. If you can't trade up or trade even I don't mind seeing TNLNSL in the log. Also please don't put the pen or pencils in the log book bag, it tends to destroy the watertight integrity.
Swaggies are not tradeable items. Please feel free to take them without making a trade, but please leave a note in the logbook and your online log, and do log them online. Grounspeak Trackables (geocoins and travel bugs) can NOT be logged into this cache, or any other GCA cache. Please don't drop any Grounspeak Trackables in this cache, and if you find any in this cache please remove them and log a "Grab it from somewhere else" log for the trackable.
Please be careful to replace the cache so that it is sheltered from the sun, and that the rocks are not resting on the container.
Congratulations to jim@chris on the First To Find. |

And there are hundreds of signs saying do not drive tired so geocaching helped with that.
The day turned eventful after gashing my leg at a cache, putting a tiny hole in my font tyre returning from Madura Cave then at Norseman the motel i had booked with did not have me on their list, so managed to get a room at the pub. They do say they come in threes.....
This cache was a very quick find and yes there is water there but it must be boiled first!!!
Thanks for the cache Wandering Aus
There were deep puddles along the dirt road to this one so I reckon the tanks would be full at the moment. We didn't need water though so just grabbed the cache. It is a bit sad and has a hole in one corner but the plastic bag it is in is keeping the contents dry. We had a small container in the van but it would not have accommodated the log book for this one.
Think it has been about 450 kilometres since our last find. In hindsight we should have only grabbed every second cache on the way over and had some to break the journey on the way back.
Thanks.
A quick find here while passing by. I also passed on the water offer...

And was surprised to find a sign indicating that there was drinking water available
A splash through the puddles on the track to the tanks later and I had to tread carefully to avoid all the mud lying around.
I hurried up and found the cache first ... just in cache any pesky muggles came along.
An easy find in its cairn of concrete
Back to the tanks to fill up me empty water container.
I was not surprised to see a sign saying "Boil water before drinking !!"
Some of the graffiti on the tanks suggest not drinking the water at all
Well I can say that the water that came out of the tank today was clear, and odourless.
No wrigglers found
So I will be quite happy to make a cuppa tea or three with it
TFTC !! A great location to remind people what a scarce resource water is in this area.
Thanks for giving us a reason to stop and stretch our legs.
It was a quick find.

Quick find while lunch was being prepared.
Very quiet place. A bit windy though.

Thanks again to Keith for the cache. TNLN
When we rocked up there was just one vehicle, a campervan. The driver, a guy on his own was busily cleaning his van, complete with step ladder to reach the roof!..How odd we thought, way out here in the middle of nowhere, what a place to choose to wash your vehicle!.
I went off to find the cache, and when i got back the guy explained that the night before he had camped at the campsite near a lookout back over the border on the SA side, the wind was very strong, and his van had got soaked by sea spray. Glad now, that we had decided to seek a more secluded spot a little further inland, but with a plentiful wood supply and peace and quiet.(See log for the cache "Whale Watching"
Thanks WanderingAus for the cache.
Cache was located quickly and all the neccesary work down whilst lunch was prepped. After a quick-ish break, we were back on the road again - and just in time as some muggles showed up just as we were leaving.

Thanks for the hunt, WanderingAus.
