Description

The Arm River track is the shortest route into Pelion Hut, which is located about halfway along the Overland Track.

A whole range of circuit and through walks can be configured using the Arm River, Lees Paddocks, Walls of Jerusalem and Overland Tracks, stopping at Pelion Hut along the way.

Pelion Hut is a large modern hut that sleeps 60 inside, has a wide verandah right around which is great to sleep on, tent platforms, toilet and rain water tanks.

Mt Oakleigh, Pelion East, Pelion West , and Mt. Ossa are all able to be climbed as day walks from Pelion Hut.

Old Pelion Hut , which was built in 1895 in conjunction with copper mining activities in the area, is now the oldest hut in the Park. The hut is designated as Emergency Shelter only now, but is well worth a visit as is the surrounding mine diggings.

Map Reference: TASMAP 1:25,000 Rowallan and Cathedral cover the whole of the Arm River Track.

Refer to Cradle Mountain Lake St Clair and Walls of Jerusalem National Parks by Chapman, Chapman and Siseman, for detailed track notes for the Arm River track and other access routes, planning and safety.

Walking time from carpark on Arm Road to Pelion Hut is approx. 4-5hrs.

To log this cache, (compulsory), enter the very large cache container (which is about the size of a hut that sleeps 60) and log your visit in the logbook ( which has kindly been provided by PWS) using your CACHER NAME, photograph your entry and add the photo to the gallery of this cache. Easy - once you get there! Also, (Optional, but would be very nice of you), while you have your camera out, a photo or 2 or 3 of your visit to the hut. It can be a photo of the view from the verandah of Oakleigh, Barn Bluff or Cradle. It can be a photo of the wildlife, human or otherwise. In fact , it can be a photo of anything to do with your visit to the Hut that you want to show me, and I'm sure other cachers will be equally interested.

A beautiful spot with the view of Mt Oakleigh. Had to sleep in the kitchen though because of the snorers.

Found with blossom* on our hike Very Happy

11-Feb-15
Walking the Overland track we met up here with a heap of people we'd seen along the way.

11-Oct-14
Walked in from Arm River for an overnight stay. Only 2 other couples in residence who were doing the Overland Track together. Weather was a bit overcast & some drizzle on the way in, rewarded with a magniicent day after the fog lifted on the way out. Love this area of Tassie. Very Happy

Very happy to be in a hut this night, even though it was very full due to the long weekend. Arrived before the thunderstorms, then watched the lightning and rain from the hut verandah. It was interesting swimming in the gorge with lightning flashing overhead!

Found it, wasn't hard to notice the large cache sitting in the middle of nowhere. I have to say it was the most beautiful thing I have ever seen in the world after hiking in even if we did still have to set up camp and make dinner yet.
Beautiful spot!

Had no problems locating this one as it is in a huge container. Thanks

We arrived on a beatiful warm sunny afternoon and pitched the tents on the platforms. We knew there was a change on the way....and what a spectacular and rapid change it was. The clouds slowly twisted there way around Mt Oakleigh and the sky darkened.....Whoosh....the storm hit, bringing strong winds hail and lightning.
Recorded in the PWS log as Mitchell Four.

12-Jan-09
We camped on the tent platforms for our 5th night out on the Overland Track, and after taking in Mt Oakleigh (from the top) I plum forgot to log this one properly! :p

Finally..after reading so much about the Arm Track and Pelion Hut...this cache brought us to its end point...and what a site.I should also add that your walk times are eminently more sensible than those stated in some walking books. The hut(cache) was actually larger than I imagined...well set out and very comfy. Mt Oakleigh was beckoning but sadly not enough time today...but rest assured...I'll be back. The sad part on signing the logbook was that this was the last cache in the series...a series thoroughly enjoyed...one of the best...and in company with 'Dippy' one of the most memorable days ever. Many thanks geoskid...loved the series..Cheers.

Just first to log; and I liked that this one was a virtual cache. A very warm and comfy end-point for our walk on the Arm River Track, even if we weren't staying. (And a very flash toilet set-up too). It was funny that the track seemed to pass through the hut. I was amazed by the number of out-there walks that seemed to emanate from here. And I found it surprising the number of people that we met on the track - this multi-day bushwalking mullarkey is really popular!!! It was a fantastic walk - thanks for a terrific series geoskid and the company Sirius. It was great.

Nearly forgot to log this cache! :-/

Although we camped on the platforms I did pay the hut a visit to check it out and sign the logbook. I thought the hut was pretty speccy (until I saw Windy Ridge!). Can't beat the views from here and, after a hard days slog, it was a great place to rest your heels.
The resident wildlife was superb. This was only one of two places that I saw a Quoll while I was on the Track. Living under the toilet of all places.

Thankyou for building such a large cache in such a beatiful area Parks Tas. is all I can say.

Well I walked the overland track on a school trip in 1979, climbed Mt Pelion West and Mt Ossa, somewhere there are photos, the old fashioned kind. Might get to do it again someday but definetely need to work on my fitness first. Thanks for invoking the memories.
