Description

As this cache belongs to a series...PLEASE NOTE conditions at cache....   geocaching.com.au/cache/ga1150

This cache is at an altitude of 1300m and will take you to the northern edge of the Central Plateau Conservation Area and as with all of Tassies alpine

areas please take all appropriate precautions. Access can be gained from the Lake Highway at  S41 43.396 E146 43.441

A quite steep and tortuous climb should see you on the plateau within 30 min. or so. Additional pink tape has been placed as the  track zigs and

zags quite often. Once on the plateau the track skirts around a rocky outcrop and then basically follows the edge of the escarpment. The track is well

marked with rock cairns and additional pink tape. The track has some sheer vertical drops along the way....so please take care...more so if

accompanied by pets or the younger brigade.

Canines are allowed into the CPCA but you require a FREE 'Companion Dog Permit' which is available from Parks at MoleCreek....and by following

some simple guidelines.

On a clear day ...views of Bass Strait and all mountain ranges south, east and west can be had. Beware of the sheer vertical drop within 3m of GZ.

The cache is a black 1.2lt sistema with logbook, pencil, code printouts, 3 Tassie Devil badges for first 3 finders(no swap required) and usual swaps.

Enjoy!

First official find for over 5 years, and the cache is still in good condition. Lots of “found by accident” notes in the logbook though.
One said they took a wrong turn at Lake Meston lol
I’ve driven past the trailhead a ridiculous number of times, and this time I had planned - I would be finished with work in Deloraine at 2:30pm and come home over the highlands, enjoying a leisurely walk to the bluff. As it happened, I didn’t get away until after 4pm, so I didn’t start walking until 4:40pm.
The clamber up was tiring but beautiful, and then the plateau walk became a little tedious except for the amazing edge drops now and then. By the time I got to the far point, mist and clouds were rolling in, but I still got amazing views.
The walk back was faster across the top but slower down the hill (old knees).
All about just under 2 1/2 hours including taking in the views.
Thanks so much for the cache, which is why I knew about Projection Bluff in the first place!

We had a lovely walk up to Projection Bluff today. Sunny but not hot and virtually no wind. Close to perfect weather. We had a leisurely lunch at GZ enjoying the extensive if somewhat hazy views. The walk up to the cache is very straightforward. A short ascent and then a good track along the tops to the bluff. Cache was in good condition. Great cache - thanks.

Tackling some caches that needed to be turned into smilies and this was one of them. Mr T made the climb in 30 mins and enjoyed the view and the challenge. Took just over 2 hrs return.

Cache is in excellent condition

Many thanks for the cache.

Very Happy Second find in the series. Very Happy Found at 12:15 today in the company of a small group of LWC members. We sat in the lee of the rocks to eat lunch and try to stay out of the wind as much as possible. The cache is in excellent condition. I have had a number of attempts to get here, but always been foiled by weather, health or commitments, and it was worth the wait. Although there was low cloud on the plateau we did get some great views on the climb up and it was interesting to see Quamby Bluff from a different perspective. TNLN. TFTC!

Well, we threw the gauntlet down to ourselves - it was about time we started on this series. It may take us a long time to complete all the caches but that isn't a posibility unless you start. It was certainly a demanding climb to get to the plateau but all the hand hold and foot holds (rocks, roots, branches etc) were a great assistance. The scenery along the way was magnificent - the variety and shapes of the trees, the range of mosses and lichen and the occasional fungi made for an interesting climb. The track is reasonably well marked but on a couple of occasions we took a wrong turn and had to back track a little. After a little over an hour we emerged onto the plateau. We found some cairns but, unfortunately quickly lost the path. We managed to find our way back to the path on one occasion but then lost it again. We thought that we could spend most of the time looking for the cairns and so decided to take a direct route to GZ. There was quite a deal of scrub bashing involved and at times the vegetation was quite thick and difficult to get through. However after a little over an hour we got to GZ. Accurate coordinates (what else would you expect from Sirius Tas) led to a very quick find - the hint was not needed. The cache and its contents were in excellent condition. After signing the log we spent some time taking in the views. The weather was quite reasonable and we could see in every direction although there was some haze. Projection Bluff is certainly a great vantage point. Having got to GZ we saw a trail of cairns heading off into the distance. So we decided to follow the cairns on our return walk. We had walked across the lower areas of the plateau to get to GZ but the cairns kept us high and to the east nearly to the edge of the escarpment. Although we again lost the trails for short periods (mainly due to some cairns collapsing) we were able to pick up the path again and continue on. The descent was interesting - we hadn't realised the steepness of some sections that we had climbed. After just under 4 hours since we had left, we arrived back at the car. Thanks Sirius Tas for another great caching experience - it is a walk that we will remember for a long time. Now to plan the next Gauntlet!

With no family about for chrissy, I thought I'd take advantage of the favourable weather forecast and get another Gauntlet. Though when I got on top of the plateau I had to swap the sun hat for a beanie, but not for too long, the views were great. TFTC

We wanted a nice easy day today, a few leisurely walks and plenty of time to relax. This one delivered just that. By far the easiest in the series so far it was a pleasant stroll up and back.
The views were great and interesting as they were different to those we have become accustomed to on our usual mountain hikes. Nice to see the great lake from that perspective.

Couldn't spend to long at the top though as we seemed to be the main course for most of the wildlife.

A nice and different walk. Thanks Sirius.

Great cache location - Well done.

i'm charlie 12 years of age, my first cache and looking for more.
the climb was fun but was a very foggy day. went off the track for a while so took some time to find the cache but it was real good.
took some tape from the cache and put a golfball in, i reccomend taking afew golfballs and a club it would be awesome to hit one off the cliff. overall it rocked

Time to try out the dodgy knee with a moderate downhill walk. Wish we had found the well marked, cairned and taped track on the way over. That would have saved us 30 minutes. Easy on the way back.

Highlight of the day was 3 eagles soaring directly above us so close you felt you could reach out and touch them. They flew from us over to Quamby and back again several times on the wind and thermals.

Sorry Sirius but the Eagles where better than the cache, but without the cache we would not have made a second trip here.

We were blessed with crystal clear horizons today when we reached this cache that enabled us to see Bass Strait off Ulverstone and Hawley Beach, Beaconsfield, Westbury, Cradle Mountain and an intriguing looking summit identified as Ironstone Mountain.
Our party of ten had a great walk up form the car park to the summit with little 4 year old legs capably coping with the climb to the plateau. And then things turned ugly. We were wearing shorts, no gaiters and those alpine plants have lots of pointy leaves. Ouch. We were able to follow the markers across the plateau but the constant scratching was demoralising. The views were worth it, the cache easily found and the carried beer truly appreciated. We brought down more bottles than we carried up though.
This is a fabulous walk Sirius, many thanks for placing this cache here. The next one on our list should be Ironstone.....

Yes I found a cache!!

It's been a long time since I stopped caching seriously, I still have a slight interest. So as part of CraigRat and my commitment to doing "One good (bush)walk a month" in the interest of getting out and exploring our fine state we tackled this one for our second walk of the year. A fine walk it was too with views that never tire, even on a hazy day like today.

Cache was found after a short search of the area, we then settled down for lunch before setting off back to the car.

Took koosh ball thingy and left lapel pin.

Oh and having now read the cache page I see it's part of a MEGA series, not good for a person that teeters near the edge of the obsessive compulsive precipice. Might have to up it to TWO good walks a month Smile

Thanks Sirius Tas.

1st non-virtual cache for me for 2009, and it did not disappoint!

Horus and myself have committed ourselves to 'One good walk a month' and I thought this walk was just what the doctor ordered. and I was right.

A steep but rewarding climb to the top, stunning views and a cache to boot. Heaven.

Took many photos, and soaked up the vista, and even in the haze it was beautiful.

If I can do a cache like this every months, I will be a very happy chappy.

Thanks Sirius, your cache locations are tops!

What surprises me about all these Gauntlet caches (apart from how great they are) is how uniquely and characteristically different they all are. No mountain is like another, and even when you think you know what to expect, you don't.

One of the things I loved most about this climb was the mosses and lichens all draped on the weathered, gnarled trees and rocks; with the sun trickling through it was like some kind of enchanted wonderland. Then of course the plateau itself with scoparia and other wildflowers stretching out in colourful clumps as far as the eye can see and the exciting clifftop walk and grand views. It was all awesome.

Wow - another great walk - I'm getting to see so many amazing places in Tassie that I'm sure I wouldn't have done otherwise (well, not so quickly anyway). It was nice that the climb up didn't seem to take so long, but then it was a good walk across the plateau. Once again I took a heap of photo stops. No need for rollercoaster rides - that path next to the sheer drop at the edge of the escarpment is thrilling enough!!! Cache was perfectly placed and should stay safe and sound in its protected spot. I found myself zigging and zagging on the way back a few times, following what I thought was the track only to see a marker back over on the path that I didn't take (and the one I'm following now not there) Uncanny how that happens. The tape (in addition to the markers and cairns already present) were invaluable. Mind you I had my waypoints as back-up too. Weather was perfect. Glad I wore long trousers! Thank you Sirius.

Drat Christmas dos! We were unavoidably elsewhere for the weekend and hoping to collect this FTF this week. Well done all of you for being so quick.

14-Dec-08
Hey...you guys/gals are hot off the mark...cache had barely time to cool down. Great effort to all. Cheers

It appears that the Northern/Southern rivalry is well and truly on (and strong!) ...... ME AND MY BIG MOUTH!!
We were only about 100 meters into the walk when we spotted the first signs that someone was here not long before us. There was no sign of any car at the parking coords and two different sets of geriatric looking footprints meant it was unlikely to be one of the two trips sirius made over the last few days. Hmmm could it be geoskid?, Strebor Wanderers?, Hookline?, or maybe Neribil and 3DG???
We continued on up the escarpment and then the lovely walk across the plateau to the cache.
Spot on coords (as always) meant a quick easy find and I took loads of pictures (as always).
Congrats to 3DG and Neribil for FTF.
Thanks for this excellent series of caches Sirius. The legs are getting a good workout and so is the competitive nature in me, but best of all I am seeing places that I am certain I wouldn’t have seen if it wasn’t for your amazing effort in these cache locations.
Thanks

14-Dec-08
Neribil had got wind of an imminent attack by a couple of Southern upstarts so pulled me out of bed at some ungodly hour.
I reluctantly agreed, so off we went - he had to drive due to my overindulgence at the office party the previous night.
Nice climb to get the blood circulating then once on the plateau didnt bother with the track and just followed the arrow.
Nice empty logbook greeted us.
Yay! FTF for the Northerners!

Another quality cache in the series.
Many thanks Sirius......I'd rather do one cache like this than a dozen drivebys.

BTW MB - I'm not a bugger....and I'm definately NOT OLD

14-Dec-08
Yes I know why 3DG and Neribil were keen as red tag had let the cat out and you 2 old buggers rushed off to beat us there.
Well next time you will have to be quick as the cache won't even have time to cool down from being in sirius's bag by the time I find it.
We had perfect weather and not a drop of rain. Magnificent views and a fabulous cache location.
Thanks sirius for a top cache.

14-Dec-08
3daygrowth was keen to find this one so off we set on a very windy and overcast morning. The climb up was a bit slippery due to recent rain and on the plateau it was hard walking in the wind. Cache was located without difficulty and we were the FTF. Due to low cluds restricting the views there was no point hanging about so it was a quick retreat back to the car. Always a good walk in this area and looking fordward to more from you Sirius. Took badge. Thanks

13-Dec-08
Hey redtag....I was probably still up there as I had to go back and shift the cache which I had on a prominent knob 1.5km across the plateau...but later found out it wasn't the highest point...so this cache has taken two trips and 6.5 hrs of solid walking to get it right....but definitely worth it...at least I'm getting fitter..lol.
BTW...it's pouring up here today...so cache may be safe from those keen northerners for this weekend any way???

12-Dec-08
sirius you have got to be kidding me.....I drove past here yesterday (after doing The Devils Gauntlet B) and I had time to kill..... those obsessed northern cachers are going to beat me to those badges again ..... ohh .... whats a tired girl to do ????

12-Dec-08
After my 2nd trip around this plateau it's all systems go. Enjoy!
