Description
I've Cached Everywhere, Man - GCA Geocache Series |
Wallangarra 2.0
I've Cached Everywhere, Man is the largest cache series hidden in Australia. It is made up of the locations made famous by Lucky Star in the song "I've been everywhere" in 1962, lyrics by Geoff Mack. Wallangarra is mentioned in the third verse.
Wallangarra is a small town located in QLD right on the border, and is the third most southerly town in QLD. The addresses on the NSW side of the border are in the locality of Jennings. There are about 400 people that live in town. The name is of aboriginal origin, and translates to 'Plenty of Water'
Wallangarra is located in a gap between two mountain ranges, which is why the New England Highway and the railway line both pass though town. The town was built because of the railway - back in the olden days the width of the train tracks used to vary between states. It was here that the 'break of gauge' happened. Nearby Tenterfield had the necessary infrastructure to handle the break of gauge, but the governments of the day though that it needed to happen precisely at the state border.
Until 1982 The Anderson Meat Packing Company operated a large beef abattoir at Wallangarra. Anderson's employed in excess of 400 workers at the Wallanagarra plant. The plant was located on the border so as to take advantage of rail lines from both Queensland and NSW. After this closed the town's future looked dim. Ten years later, however, Australia's largest mutton works opened on a new site just to the east of the town.
Wallangarra is also the gateway to some massive granite outcrops and is the southern end of QLD's Granite Belt. Nearby Girraween National Park has some great walks (and caches) that allow you explore some of this terrain.
The cache is a small sistema container, with logbook and some swaps. It's located in a garden at a church, just off the main highway. I've included a spoiler pic in the gallery if you need a hand finding it. Interesting storty about the 4 trees planted in the church grounds. They are over 100 years old now - the things and times that they have seen! Old mate next door has some pretty cool metal sculptures. Mind the red-back spiders!

Thanks for another ICEM cache MattyRx. Mrs y'stassie was very pleased with her haul of 3 ICEM caches in one day
The cache was well and truly buried, as per the description, under an oblong paver. I've cleared that, so it should be easier to find now.

Some clever metal art next door that we took time to admire.
Thanks for the cache MattyRx and adding more fun to our day.
It was pretty easy to find the cache. No we didn't go into the yard, I got Suzy to reach under the fence. The container made a useful platform for Max and I to sit. There were some interesting sculptures in the yard next door. That big black dude was a bit scary.
Thank you for the cache.
As Samboo would say... another ICEM adventure ticked off.
Thanks for the cache.
