Please note: Multigrip Pliers may be required to open this cache!

A small rocky headland seperates Coolangatta to the south and Kirra to the north.

Over the years, this beach has undergone many changes. It once had world class surf - but in the 1960's and 70's the beach experienced massive erosion. Rock walls were built an in the end, a controversial sand pumping project started to repair sand loss. Due to the changes in the beach configuration, the amazing surf that was Kirra beach has now gone. The beach is still an awesome spot to swim and take the family though.

The cache is designed to blend in to its surroundings and is hidden in plain sight. Due to the nature of how the container is constructed, there's only room for a pencil and a logsheet. There is information recorded on the cache container that will assist you in finding the Gold Coast Beaches GeoTour Challege Cache. (The GCBGCC for short)

Nothing here

Second failed hunt out of 2 this morning. Knew what to look for and went well beyond GZ in search of it. There does appear to be a section of fence missing at GZ and I suspect the cache may have gone missing with it. Pic attached.

I visited Kirra Beach on the last day of Blitz 2021. The sun had set but there was sufficient light to find the cache on the erosion fence. People were still coming off the beach at that time. It was the ANZAC Day public holiday and it was quite fortuitous that a Camo Koala sculpture was nearby and took a photo. Thanks for the cache MattyRx.

Watawieh from Norfolk Island.
I was familiar with the hide having found a few of these before making for an easy find.
But I was unable to open the enclosed bison container. It is jammed shut and will require some tools to open it

Spotted it from about 50m away. Had trouble getting into the outside container but managed it eventually. Bit windy for a swim today but I’ve swim here billions of times in my life. Grew up in Cooly Clapping

Another easy cache to spot but a slightly smaller version of the one we found previously.
Still had a bit of trouble getting in to this one.
A lovely area and some unusual coloured koalas dominate the scenery.
And from here we couldn't help notice that Surfers Paradise looks like it is built on the water.
Another outstanding GCA cache. Thanks.

This one has gone missing, like its cousin a few beaches over, in Rainbow Bay. I've replaced it today - slightly different place. All coordinates have been updated in the listing!
Old Co-ordinates: S28° 10.031' E153° 31.749'
New Co-ordinates: S28° 10.002' E153° 31.622'

Quick find on Labour Day. Parking was the biggest challenge! TFTC MattyRx

09-Apr-19
On this year's trip up to Rainbow Bay, I decided to have a look at what the areas GCA caches have to offer.
I am predominantly active on the Groundspeak site and have really only used GCA for locationlesses and the occasional trig point that I happened to be right next to.
Today I finally got a morning where nothing was happening, and so I went for a walk. It was quite a substantial walk (that's right, I can be active if I want to) and I ended up finding quite a few caches along the way.

Spotted this one as I continued my walk, now en route to the surf shop down the road.
Found it from a distance back, knowing roughly what I'd be looking for.
Opened it up, signed the log and returned.

Thanks to MattyRx for placing this cache.

One of my favourite beaches. TFTC

We mostly remember Kirra Beach as being family friendly. To get to deeper water you had to wade a long way which meant kids didn't suddenly find themselves out of their depth. We also remember free camping near a zoo.... Shocked Today was the coolest December day we've experienced and there was no one swimming in the late afternoon. What a bonus for finding the cache. Very Happy TFTC and the interesting history MattyRx.

I'm a Kirra girl from way back, I lived at the back and went to school on the hill. Many of my classmates had sun-bleached hair and permanently peeling noses in summer. They lived for the surf. Me, I am blue eyed with fair-skin which burns at the drop of a hat. But that doesn't mean I don't enjoy the beach, its just that I the 80s you'd probably find my bike chained to a post outside the surf club before 10am or after 2pm. My bike basket was big enough for my beach-towel and a book and I spent many a time reading, and going for a swim. I remember distinctly the erosion in the 70s and 80s where at times there was barely enough room for my towel between the high water mark and the rock wall. Roughly where the cache is, there used to be a caravan park but that was washed away in a storm. I don't remember it. The smaller rock groyne was built on the wrong angle and as a result there was pretty much no sand between it and the North Kirra surf club. Cyclonic swell was always interesting when it washed up and sometimes over the retaining wall.

While its sad that the old break has gone because of the sand pumping, it still appears occasionally when the conditions are right, but never in the form it used to have.

Thanks for the cache, and the trip down memory lane.

It was a very hot day, so we thought if we went to the beach, we might be able to cool off. We also thought we might be able to find a cache to start our Journey or Destination adventure. Well MattyRX, that was a very tricky cache, not tricky for me because I am a very clever bear, but tricky in that muggles will never twig that its not what it appears to be.

Petan and I had a discussion about who would claim it first, we ended up doing rock paper scissors - paper always beats rock. I won! Now I can lord it over them.

Thank you for the cache.
