Description

Please note: Multigrip Pliers may be required to open this cache!

Mermaid Beach receives its name from the cutter HMS Mermaid. Explorer John Oxley sailed aboard the Mermaid in 1823 when he discovered the nearby Tweed and Brisbane rivers.

Hedges Ave (or Millionaire's Row as it's known) boasts some of the fanciest, luxurious stately homes on the Gold Coast. The beaches here are quieter than most other places on the coast, as the fancy houses virtually sit on the beach.

The local radio station is worth a visit too.

The cache is designed to blend in to its surroundings and is hidden in plain sight. Due to the nature of how the container is constructed, there's only room for a pencil and a logsheet. There is information recorded on the cache container that will assist you in finding the Gold Coast Beaches GeoTour Challenge Cache. (Which is not located in Millionaires Row)

A nice dog friendly beach. Once at GZ I had to wait ages for muggles to move on. Finally managed a break to snatch up the prize. But then more muggles with little fluffy muggles came and hung around for a bit. Just waiting for them to disappear now. haha

Day 61 Mainland trip
Out and about caching in this beautiful area with Tassie Trekkers targetting GCA caches and this clever hide was one we found. This is the first geotour we have followed, thanks for compiling. A great way to see the beaches in the area. TFTC

You know what we like? We like a beach path that goes between the houses/apartments and the beach.... like from Rainbow Bay to Currumbin. As has been stated in the description, it doesn't happen here on millionaire's row so walkers, joggers and cyclists have to find their own route.

Arriving at GZ we knew we were going to have to outwait the muggles gazing out to sea like they were looking for mermaids. Possibly MrsG spoilt that view entirely by doing the same in a closer position to the cache as they soon left. Laughing Well that worked... now with this whole area to ourselves we could easily grab the cache. TFTC MattyRx.

Welcome to Hollywood! No I haven't mixed up the location of Movieworld, the original 1920's land development named this area Hollywood. It was changed to Mermaid Beach later. In fact the original plans show a road running between the houses on 'Millionaire's Row' and the beach, with the space between the road and beach meant to be open space. I am not sure exactly what happened to it, I can only assume nasty weather in the previous century washed it all away but it does raise some interesting possibilities should some of the more vocal community groups start agitating for the extension of the Oceanway in front of these houses. Still that is politics and I won't go there.

But I will say, thanks for the cache.

I was a bit surprised when we found this cache, there was another name on the log sheet - someone named Chris Percy on the 3rd of December. We think he/she might have been a muggle because it hasn't been logged online. So even though our name is not first in the logsheet, I am going o claim first to find. That's right, isn't it!

The deck was a nice place to sit and chill out and I can see that other people think so too, because not only is there a sign proclaming it to be the Deck of Knowledge, there was also the bottle opener of enlightenment.

Thanks for the cache.
