Description

D u r a n b a h

Please note: Multigrip Pliers may be required to open this cache!

This beach is not 'strictly' in the Gold Coast - It's actually in the Tweed Shire Council LGA, and is the northern most beach in NSW. The average joe in the street would call this a Gold Coast beach, so here it is in the GeoTour. Duranbah beach is also known as Flagstaff Beach, or abreviated to D'bah. Some even call it the 'Big D'.

That last statement was a lie.

Duranbah Beach is popular for its surf conditions. The beach faces east, which exposes it to high wave energy and high longshore rates. The waves are predominantly from the south-easternly side; however, they can come from all seaward directions. The waves are on average 1.3 metres and have reached six metres in height during a king tide. There are often persistent rips and strong tidal currents which make the beach a potentially hazardous place to swim.

The cache is designed to blend in to its surroundings and is hidden in plain sight. Due to the nature of how the container is constructed, there's only room for a pencil and a logsheet. There is information recorded on the cache container that will assist you in finding the Gold Coast Beaches GeoTour Challege Cache. (Big D caching. Love it.)

FINALLY!!! This only took about 4 visits to get a clear view and be willing to break a few nails to get the top off. (i left the hammer in the car of course) Very HappyVery HappyVery Happy

There is some pipework going on in the immediate area just to let you know Matty. The pencil was covered in hair so I gave it a wipe down and some sanitiser to it and the tube and added another pencil on the opposite side of the paper for next finder. hopefully it will all be clean.

Muggle central here even this late in the arvo 1630. A surfer dude had parked his car right up to the cache. I walked behind his van and tried but couldn’t get the lid off. He came round to see what I was up to so I asked him to pull the lid off and told him about geocaching. He had noticed the container and wondered what it was.

Our 3rd in this series and our first cache in NSW on the way south. There was some argument about whether this one was going to be in Queensland or NSW but the location next to the cache title solved the dilemma.
Didn't need the GPS here, just pulled up right near GZ and jumped out and logged the cache. Worked out how to open them by now.
About 20 swamp rats were out on the water but none in the carpark which made life easier.
Again thanks for another brilliant GCA hide. Much appreciated after being in the GCA wilderness of the Sunshine Coast.

The hardship of it all, I had to walk only metres to this one

Found this one today whilst exploring the coast heading home from further north. It wasn't till I saw the giant nearby memorial that I thought to check if there were any GCA caches around. I passed heaps today! I even walked past only meters from one! Duh!

Well eventually the surfers prepping for the waves finally moved on and I could grab this cache. I was aiming for a quick stealthy grab but it actually took a bit more effort than expected to retrieve the cache. haha.

Another awesome hide Mr MR. TFTC Smile

Walking in this area today to grab some more local caches and realised that we were going right past this one.
Quickly crossed the road and spotted it from a mile off, having previously found some in this series yesterday.
Another well-placed cache, completely hidden from the eyes of muggles (and there were a lot of them out today).
Signed the log and returned with no realisation from the general public.
Thanks MattyRx for placing this cache!

You know how geocachers always have to find one more cache... this was it. After returning from Currumbin and having fish and chips at Kirra, we came to find Duranbah. Luckily we knew what Duranbah Beach looked like because there was no view now. It was dark.... so dark I couldn't see MrG at the cache and I was only ten metres away. It was also the quietest place we've been since arriving at the Gold Coast.... and wouldn't this make the best free camp for motorhomes but we might be a bit biased on that point. So by the light of the bike we signed the log of our last cache for the day. TF an excellent geotour so far MattyRx. We'll be back to finish it asap. Very Happy

Having found the nearby Rainbow Bay cache in this series I knew what to look for now. No swimming

My turn to log this cache. I let petan go first. This is a nice spot and we stopped to watch surfers in the water, but there wasn't many decent waves. I think its called tea-bagging where a surfer is desperate just to get wet and sit on his/her board in the hope that a reasonable wave comes to surf. Sometimes you just have to get salt water in your veins.

Thank you for the cache.

If Samboo Bear found Kirra, then it must be petan's turn to find Duranbah. With the experience of Kirra under our belts, we knew what to look for and were especially fortunate that an illegally parked 4x4 provided additional cover. I am in awe of your chutzpah in these hides.

Duranbah beach was named after the SS Duranbah, a North Coast Steamship which ran aground here in 1919. Ironically, the boat was named after a small locality in the ridge between Kingscliff and the Tweed Valley. There is a school there bearing its name. A friend of mine, who was a music teacher at Duranbah Public School, recalls the day a young surfer drove into the school grounds and asked "where was the surf break?". Err mate, its quite a distance "that away". There was an attempt to call this beach Flagstaff Beach in honour the Flagstaff which was positioned on the hill above where the pilot station was located, but the name never really took hold.

Thanks for the cache.
