Description

Mission 11: Tallow Sand - FAILED

This cache was found twice, and then the movie it is named after only got a score of 50/100 on Metacritic. Epic Failure. But just like the movie, there will be sequels. And here it is!

Mission 11a: Tallow Be Thy Name - ONGOING

Can we do better than the original? Lets see. To start off with, GZ for the original stash wasn't the best location. See the image below, the new cache is temporarily sitting right where the original stash was hidden.

Not the best location, so we've relocated this cache just a short distance away. I do acknowledge that the beach geography may have changed over the last 17 years though. The listed coordinates of this stash are the same as that of the original Ape Cache - but if you walk 31 meters, at a bearing of 320 degrees, you'll arrive at the new location. Waiting for you is a 3L sistema container, packed with goodies. It's covered and well hidden. Please rehide it as best you can or the surfing muggles that walk past in their hundreds everyday might foil our mission. You can use the geochecker to see if you got your projection right.

Whilst on my fortnight+ road trip up to Brisbane eand back to Blue Mountains. A leisurely drive up. Avoiding GC power trails. Randomly driving to various spots that take my fancy. Like this, a GCA hide.

Worked out my GPS projection, details verified by the geo checker. Alas, two bush turkeys have built a big round nest. When you come closer, they’ll show you their bottoms in order kick soil and twigs back into you. Nesting time? That season is from August to January. Certainly cannot disturb that half metre high nest.

Checked on this one today. It's still in place, but getting harder to find as the vegetation at GZ is getting a little thicker.

I couldn't log this before, and just remembered to do it today. Great cache and simple hide. TFTC!

Whilst at the spot - Samuel: "wouldn't it be cool if we dug down a bit and found the APE cache in the sand Dad" - Me: "yes, that would be pretty cool mate!".... we projected a waypoint, faffed about in the brush for a bit, read Matty's last log, and refined our search - all in great condition.... TFTC!!

Checked up on this one today, it's still in it's spot. The banksias have grown since it was hidden, which helps protect the cache a bit better. To find it walk into the bushes from the path. It's about 3.5 meters from the sign (towards the beach). It's covered with a nice large sheet of bark. Plenty of swaps etc. still in the box too.

And here's the hat trick of DNFs today. Miss J and I searched where we'd worked out the finals, widening the search area after a while, but bombed out again.

Interesting location. I would love to visit the remaining two Project A.P.E. Caches. Thanks for the cache.
Cheers

Day 75 Mainland trip
Out and about caching around Byron Bay with Tassie Trekkers and this was one we found. Lots more room in the car park here probably because it was wet and windy. The projection had been done before arriving so it was a quick dash to GZ to sign the log. We did pop around to the beach for a look. TFTM

Caching in the area with whitewebbs on a wet and cloudy day and this was one of the caches we found. Ducked out between showers to find this one safe and sound.

I enjoyed a lovely day today at Byron Bay. Not in the town centre but out at the farm and here at the beach. There are some very beautiful and interesting places around here to visit. I am so glad your geocache brought me here today. It was a beautiful day and I could sit and watch the waves and hang gliders for hours if I had that much time free. I enjoyed walking along the beach and watching the waves and surfers and inspecting the pebbles and shell pieces. And then there's the headland with its beautiful rocks. What a great place to spend the afternoon. And even better with a cache or two.

And this isn't just any ordinary cache either. I love that this is keeping a piece of geocaching history alive.

This cache was published only days after we were here on a visit. So we worked out the offset ready for the next visit.

If we thought we were lucky finding a park in Byron Bay earlier, imagine our disbelief when we found a shady one here and very few people. Shocked This luck surely couldn't last so we grabbed the cache and took it to the beach.... probably not too far from the original cache position. Love the idea of this reincarnation of the old Ape cache and we can only agree with the description - things must have changed dramatically after it was placed. {FTF} at 3.35pm. MattyRx.
