Description

Ummm... It is Under a Rock!

On a journey out of the remote, once-thriving osmiridium mining settlement of Adamsfield in Tasmania’s remote southwest, I couldn’t resist this hide opportunity.  Well, OK, after the “Will I? Won’t I? Will I? Won’t I? Will I? Won’t I?”, I ended up not resisting!  I’m just not used to the whole “Impulse Hide” and am still coming to grips with the fact that I have just placed a cache with a ridiculously high level of Spontaneity, and no MMoPP! (Months and Months of Prior Preparation)!

The cache is on Clear Hill Road, a dirt road that in good weather is quite suitable for 2 wheel drive use, as long as the usual “dirt-road-driving-caution” is taken.  The coordinates will put you in the area of a widened section of the road that allows you to park on the side.  You should be able to see a rock.

A large rock.

A VERY LARGE ROCK!

The cache, a black camo’ed 1.2 litre Sistema, is hidden under the NORTH face of the rock.

BUT HERE IS YOUR CHALLENGE:

Can you circumnavigate the Rock on foot BEFORE you go ahead and find the cache?!? It is quite possible, should only take a few minutes if you are reasonably fit and able, and it is quite a hoot! OK, I amuse easily! BUT can you resist the urge of a quick find long enough to take the challenge? The challenge has resulted in the 3.5 terrain rating, but terrain is only a 1.5 if you wimp out and go straight for the cache!

Please take care replacing the cache so it doesn’t disappear under the VERY LARGE ROCK!

Rumours that the rock is, in fact, a STW sitting on the entrance to a large underground MIB base can neither be confirmed nor denied.

There are barriers on both the Adamsfield track and the Clear Hill Road, which are permanently locked. Therefore, all vehicle-based visitors to Adamsfield, including those travelling by motorbike, four-wheel bike or mountain bike, require an authority and a key. You can obtain these by contacting the Mt Field National Park Visitor Centre. A $100 refundable deposit is charged for the key. The maximum number of vehicles in each group is six. To ensure access it is recommended that you book in advance.

Visitors to Adamsfield do not require a Parks pass.

Adamsfield is well worth a visit, and further information to whet your appetite can be found here:

In Adamsfield at an event put together by the ever helpful Alby so of course we needed to visit as many nearby caches we could find in the time we had.
Given the time constraints on our day we whimped out and went right for the cache!
Thanks anyway and that was a very impressive rock.

Wow, that is one big rock! A quick find on our way to Adamsfield this morning. TFTC!
Cheers,

Found on our way past to the 2018 Adamsfield event.

I stopped off at this one as we were heading into the Adamsfield event, thanks for the cache.

11-Nov-18
We allowed enough time to stop for a few caches on the way to the Adamsfiled event today. We stopped here with Tas32 and rld4963. I was too busy checking out the huge rock to think about the cache and then as I looked at my compass, Miss J spotted the hide and soon had the cache out for us to sign.
Thanks SG-3

Great trip in and out as planned nothing went wrong with Swampy vehicle this time. hard to remember the place since I last visited but the sign was still there. Thanks Alby and Daughter or all the trouble you went to, It made the trip enjoyable for all of us.

Travelling with EeePees to the nearyby GC event organised by AlbyDangles we found we had time up our sleeve to stop here. EeePees headed off head down, and missed noticing the awfully big rock. I mentioned the big rock, and read the hint to him (which mentioned the big rock), and then suggested a spot I could see from my vantage point, and there it was. Thanks for placing a cache here SG-3, nice to stop and appreciate a nice geological feature.

Found as part of a great cache adventure organised by Alby Dangles
After an eventfully drive to the site and a short walk the cache was in hand.
Thank you Alby for a great event and thank you for the cache

We were heading in to Adamsfield today to attend Alby Dangles event. As we had left ourselves plenty of time we decided to stop and look for this cache on the way in. What a surprise! Two very large rocks one each side of the road. Our GPs indicated which rock we should explore first and the cache was soon in hand. While one of the team fulfilled the cache signing duties the other went for a trot around the rock - a great little journey well worth doing for the changing vegetation and the awesome views. We found that EeePees and Lil Raffa had recently signed the log this morning and felt sure the cache would see a few more visitors today - a change from the sparse visits usually seen to this site. Cache and contents were in good condition.

Thanks for the historical information about this area SG-3 and for the cache that give us a reason to stop and explore the rock.

We managed to be running a little later than planned for today's Adamsfield event, so we left this one for the way out. A most impressive rock! TFTC

It was a busy day at this cache today. We left home at 0700 to head to an event organised by Alby Dangles at Adamsfield. The event was fantastic and Adamsfield was a very interesting place to visit and probably not a spot we would have come to by ourselves. Geocaching certainly takes you to some wonderful places. We signed this cache log at 0940 today and we could see there were a number of cachers in front of us already. Alby really outdid himself providing all the cachers at the event morning tea, lunch and afternoon tea. We spent the day in the area and returned home at 2030. Looking forward to doing the others you have at Adamsfield. This was our first cache of the day. TFTC

Hi SG-3 & Gorbak, TFTC. Was heading to the nearby GC Adamsfield event with Lil Rafa and stopped off here. I fossicked around for a bit trying to follow the GPSr until Lil Rafa could stand it no longer and said for the third time, under the big rock! Oh, that big rock! Doh. Got it, thanks.

That sure was one big rock!!! We didn't accept your challenge though as we had travelled down from the NW Coast and already spent longer at Waddamana than we should have. Plus we still wanted to ride to the Adamsfield area on that day. Plus we're wooses!!!
Cache was quickly located and we were on our way.
Thanks.

Last one out this road. It is a bit of a large rock eh!

16-Jul-13
Found on our school holiday caravan and caching trip to the south west.

It has been over 25 years since our last visit to this area and we thoroughly enjoyed returning to find this cache and the other 5 caches at Adamsfield.

Thanks for bringing us back here and for the cache SG-3 and gorbak we had a great day.

Hi SG-3 and Gorbak
GoldJ and I decided to visit Abbottsfield today and this became the first cache for the day.
After cutting a tree out of the way after it had fallen across the road; we came across this small mountain and quickly found the cache.
We logged this our first today at 1127hrs.
This became my 3014th overall find; comprising 1244 GCA finds and 1770 GC finds.
Thanks for a great start to the day.
Cheers OldSaint

This is not a rock its a mountain. We resisted the temptation to go around as we had just cut our way through a tree
that had fallen over the road. and this was our first for the day. But it was a great day out with Old Saint. All is well at GZ. TFTC

03-Nov-12
Found on my way back from Clear Hill.
I'm glad I didn't have to move the rock to get the cache.

Came along by here not knowing that there was a gate for adamsfield and that you could get a key. Should have looked at the descriptions first, so needless to say this is as far as we got. Thanks for the cache. A beautiful constelation prize!

30-Dec-10
Last one to grab while driving out from Adamsfield.
Saw the hide from the car!
Nice rock...
Thanks.

I recognised this spot from the description when driving north along the road. Before the GPSr had received sync Mrs 47tuc had already spotted the hiding spot. FWIW I did do a circuit of the rock too - clockwise.

Thanks.

By now I was quite a distance behind the Swampy mobile...so decided to stop off for cache at Florentine. Swampy must have known not too stop...as the Florentine cache and We're Not Gonna Take It...were out of bounds as both in a Forestry exclusion zone. I tried my best...and you'd of thought they may of had some compassion for a long serving employee...but no dice. Ah well...bugger it...no FTF's on offer...who cares...still plenty of good caches to find. Arrived at THE ROCK...to see not only a log by Swampy....but March Brown and Rebulus. OMG....how many more cachers are coming down here..LOL.
Quite an impressive feature....can you imagine being in the path of that monolith if it has careered down the side of the mountain..omg.
TFTC...SG-3 (and Gorbak!)...Cheers.

Thanks SG3 (and Gorbak)

First cache for me in a long time. Couldn't have picked a better trip for it. Thanks Gorbak (&SG3)

17-Jan-09
First cache on a trip with Rebulus and Swampy.
Not a lot of traffic so easy to pull up and get the cache.
I don't think this one will get wet.
Thanks SG-3 (and Gorbak!)
