Description

Lately, I haven't had a lot of luck finding a club in Northern NSW that will serve me a counter lunch and a brewski. Today I turned up at Murwillumbah Bowls and Sports Club. Same story. There's no way I'd be doing any bowling through the jungle I was presented with. The building has been trashed, and there's evidence of fire. Normally, this would be the least ideal place for a cache - but there's just something about these places that we humans once occupied and then abandoned. It really doesn't take long for nature to take over again, and it's a cool place to check out.

On the 30 July 2012 at 3:30pm the last game of bowls finished - nibbles and drinks were shared to celebrate the 91 year history of the Murwillumbah Bowls and Sports Club. The doors closed at 5pm, never to open again. The site didn't attract much interest for a while, but Woolworths bought the land a few years later. They are yet to develop the place; a noisy bunch of locals hope that they never will.

So if it's a cold beer and a nine fiddy schniddy that you fancy, you're best to move on. But if it's a cache that you want, come and take a bite!

Took a few minutes but finally spotted this one. Couldn't get the lid off so just treated it like a trig point and got a photo.

Out and about for the first serious cache drive in months. Coming back through Murbah I remembered this one so thought I would stop for a look. Found it and was reading the logs while waiting for muggles to move along and realised I didn't have to climb the fence and saves me getting my hammer out in the street. Thanks for your caches MattyRx I enjoy finding them

I'll have to visit this cache to alter it to allow the lid to be opened. As soon as our lockdown lifts I'll get there. If someone wants to find this cache in the meantime, feel free to put a pic in your online log, and don't worry about trying to open the container.

Yep - the tree is starting to consume the cache. We could not get the lid off, would need some tools we don't have on holiday....

found cache ,,,not to hard ,,but opening to sign was impossible as the tree is grown to the point of locking it up

thems some green greens they got there. at least they aren't leaving it to grow and grow and grow. Or is it so short just because it's been in drought?

well as you know, I can't go far from my car, so I was glad to see this was just a quick hop over the fence.

Thanks for this cache that brightened my day a little. Smile

Caching in the area with whitewebbs and this was one of the caches we found. Soon spotted the familiar hide under the watchful eye of a local cat.

Day 76 Mainland trip
Out and about caching in Murwillumbah and we stopped to find this cache. Another clever hide! I would have to say a "signature hide" of the CO. The only sign of life we saw was the cat. Mr W is a bowler, a sad state of affairs for a small town to lose the local club. TFTC

Wouldn't it be disappointing to turn up here thinking you were going to get a game of bowls and a cold one. Rolling Eyes Six abandoned years haven't been kind to the Club. And it's all a bit hard to fathom how something in the main part of town could have taken such a dive.... clearly bowling isn't a high priority. TFTC MattyRx.

Found on way home to Brisbane. Stopped nearby under a shady tree for lunch. Signed lig and replaced as found. TFTC

I felt like Henry Stanley, searching deepest darkest Africa for Dr Livingstone here. All I needed was a pith helmet and maybe some porters to carry my backpack and some chocolate. We poked our nose here and there then realised we'd have to be courageous and brave the weeds, but just like Stanley found Livingston, I found the cache. Once again a very clever hide Mr RX. Perhaps you might just turn me into an urbex explorer.

I feel your pain looking for a beer and counter lunch because when we finished finding the cache, I went looking for coffee.... there was nothing open. Suzy said she thought they had 'rolled up the streets' but clearly she was wrong because they all still had their bitumen tops.

Thank you for the cache.

I've been doing a lot of baking lately, and my supplies of Norco butter are very low and seeing I was in M'bah this afternoon I thought it was an opportune time to stock up. Clearly my TARDIS time circuits are playing up again because I was either too early for Woolies, or too late for the butter factory on this site.

In 1897 the Tweed Butter Company built a factory on this site, they moved to a new site across the river closer to the railway line in 1920 and this land sold. Tweed Butter Company merged with Norco in 1930s. It is said that one of the older houses on the Commercial Road site of the property originally belonged to Isaac McIlrath the factory manager but I don't have a reference for this. It is indeed interesting how nature is taking over. Just goes to prove she always wins.

Thanks for the cache. Better put butter on the shopping list.
