Description

   Killen Falls
Parking Coordinates: S28° 46.217' E153° 31.232'
Cache Coordinates: S28° 46.192' E153° 31.417'
Watercourse: Emigrant Creek
Hike Distance: 400m return (40 minutes)

Surrounded by foliage that drapes itself over the damp rock walls, this spot will have you feeling like you are in your own hidden paradise as you listen to the crashing waterfall, which plunges 10 meters down into a large swimming hole. There are some deep sections and many submerged rocks and shallower areas. The rock has been eroded significantly behind the waterfall forming an impressive cave and it is possible to sit back well behind the falls in the shade and without getting wet - infact you should log Zalgariath's Killer Killen Falls virtual cache while you are here.

There aren't any facilities here - just the bushland, water, and you. Ballina and Lennox Head are close by though.

The cache is located on your walk down to the swimming hole. After parking your car, follow the trail to the lookout. Just before the lookout there is a break in the fence to your right - follow the trail along here and the cache will be in your grasp in no time. Keep following the trail to and you'll end up at the swimming hole.

This cache is part of the Waterfalls of the Northern Rivers Geotour - a series of 10 caches highlighting the best waterfalls that the NSW Northern Rivers has to offer. Each cache has a clue which will help you compile the coordinates of a bonus cache.

We spent the morning traversing the Pearces Creek/Wollongbar area, managing 14 assorted finds with only a couple of DNFs. Our main target was Killen Falls - we love waterfalls, and there are 5 caches right there.... Smile
Watching the water gushing over the dam spillway we wondered if we'd get right into the falls, but ventured down anyway, to find the place quite packed with swimmers and sightseers.
I was daydreaming with the GPS when Samuel asked - 'is this a MattyRx cache?' - as he had seen the container! A beauty, the best container for the day, and in great condition too. We were going to revisit it on the way up for a video for the family, but were in a rush-hour departure time it seemed, with a cast of thousands traipsing up and down the path.... TFTC, awesome....
BTW - we didn't draw the penis on the logsheet! At least whoever did rehid it properly! Razz

Our last cache of the day as we promised the kids a swim in the pool back at the hotel and it was already getting late. We found GZ on the way down but could get in to access the container. On our return we were armed with a tool from the stone age and with a bit of persuasion we were successful. We brushed away the 6 legged inhabitants and Miss E found the way to extract it after blind Freddie (yeah me) missed it.
All replaced correctly.
Thanks MattyRx

1Minniemoo, Nyssaflutterby, some munchkins and I set off on a roadtrip to Ballina for a weekend.
After checking out the falls, we headed back up and knew there was a GCA traditional cache here somewhere. Luckily 1MM had enough reception to load geocube.
I thought I saw a likely spot and tried to move something but it didn't move, then Dreamerskye moved it again and there was the cache!

My second GCA cache, the first also in this location. Having been down to the falls, we were on our way back up when NyssaFlutterby and Wombles mentioned a GCA cache. Good thing I have geocube at the ready, so a quick check revealed where I had to go. Up we headed and soon came to a likely spot. Wombles checked it, I checked it, Wombles checked it again but it seemed stuck tight so perhaps it wasn't it. DreamerSkye tapped it with her foot and what we had tried to remove all of a sudden moved. WHAT?! Yes, it is the cache after all. Thanks for the cache MattyRx.

Woohoo! Our first weekend getaway for the year Smile
Heading to Ballina from Brissy, stopping off here and there, with 1MinnieMoo, wombles and my munchkins.
After having a bit of fun splashing about at the bottom of the falls we started our way back to the car and discovered this beasty along the way.

Thanks for the cache MattyRx Very Happy

Awesome! Only took a decade for someone to take up my challenge of placing a real cache here! Very Happy Great work.

Well this seemed kind of cruel today. I had determined to stay home all day to get a job done for someone, when I saw this new tour pop up on GCA's facebook page. Sure, I might have been procrastinating, wanting a break, hence the fact that I was on facebook. I knew with the job I need to get done before going down south for a week meant not being able to do the whole tour, so I decided these falls in particular couldn't wait. Besides, I really did need a break. Just not such a long one.

I picked up a GC find on my way down to the falls with my dog Boots. Turns out dogs are definitely allowed here. We went for a swim and took some film footage. Snapped a virtual cache photo and went to head home. It wasn't till I was gathering my things to leave that I realised I had forgotten the one thing I came here for - THIS CACHE! haha

I enjoyed the falls and the cache. Very clever! I look forward to visiting the rest of the series when I return from visiting my daughters.

TFTC Smile
