A Postcard From..... Uralla!   aka. Where's Thundy?

This cache is not at the listed co-ordinates. Read on to find out more.....

Frederick Wordsworth Ward (or Captain Thunderbolt as his friends like to call him) was the gentleman bushranger that escaped Cockatoo Island and was the longest roaming bushranger in Australian History. He roamed the countryside but towards the end there he spent a lot of time around Uralla. He like to hang out at the big rock (now known as Thunderbolt's Rock), and eventually he was killed at Kentucky Creek by a Constable Walker.

He's Uralla's best known celebrity and a statue of him in the main street watches over the town. It's said (by people who are probably drunk and are very ill-informed) that his ghost appears at Uralla landmarks, and a selection of postcards has been issued in which his eerie face can be found hidden at each of these attractions. Browse these postcards and find Captain Thunderbolts likeness in each one. Click (or press if you're on a tablet/phone) on his face when you find him, and you'll be presented with a new postcard.

It's said that the person who finds his ghostly face on all of the postcards will be given the directions to a secret stash that may or may not have been hidden by the man himself.

Can you check again now - we had a blackout today so the computer hosting all the stuff for this cache was offline. Looks like it should be OK now. Let me know if not!

We decided to spend a number of days in Armidale and solved a few mystery caches before leaving home, this was one of them. We enjoyed solving this cache - a different style.
The staff at the Armidale Information Centre recommended visiting the museum here so before we went in we made a quick find on this cache.
Thanks MattyRx.

I wasn't planning on ending up in Uralla this week, however the Armidale showground was closed and I had to formulate plan B. Not wanting to pay for a caravan park I looked about for another option. Uralla was nearby with this new GCA thing called geoart there so I thought why not. I was going to go for the cheap golf club camp here but on my way there decided I needed a nice long hot shower and electricity hook up for a heater. haha - I swear every time I come here with the intention to stop or cache its freezing and raining. This place isn't selling itself, so it's a good thing Thundy had these great postcards to remind me how awesome it is. haha. Honestly though, I solved this so long ago I can't remember what they were. haha. Better take a refresher look.

Well the cache was in good order and found easily enough in the second place I looked. After this I did a few more caches in the area, finishing with a backward tour of the countryside thanks to geoart.

And now it's the fun time of writing all the logs (or copying and pasting them to be entirely honest) whilst having a bite to eat and a local pale ale at the Top Pub whilst sitting beneath some interesting photography art that reminds me of where I'm headed - Byron and its hinterland. Okay I'm not heading there exactly but that's the topic of all these art pieces. Apparently the photographer was a local that lives there now. Sounds familiar.

Next stop in Uralla on our way home from the QLD mega. With all the caches in town we spent a bit of time in Uralla. Had visited the GZ earlier in the day while completing the AL and once back the hint kicked in nicely and the cache was soon in hand. Log was signed and we were on our way again.

Thanks for another one MattyRx..

#GA5206 - 15:27; Day 11 of a road trip with Sol de lune for the CacheQLD - Dayboro Mega and we are now headed for home. After spending the night in Glen Innes, we headed south caching our way through Ben Lomond, Guyra, Armidale and on to Uralla. Enjoyed the $10 lunch special at the Thunderbolt Inn before tackling the local Adventure Lab a few more of the local caches, including this one. Solved the puzzle before leaving home and returned to a familiar location to log a find on this little beauty! TFTC MattyRx Very HappyClan Cerberus

Ever since we heard the grave with the Thunderbolt headstone at the old Uralla Cemetery might actually not be Thundy, it was no surprise to find his ghostly dial gracing so many Uralla landmarks. And despite all those people saying it's wrong to glorify a bushranger.... why not? Thundy was a brilliant horseman, knew where all the best hides were and never fired at anyone unless in retaliation. You can hardly blame him for that. It was said there were some who sided with Thundy and put out the 'washing-on-the-line' system to let him know police were present. Even today, if you visit his supposed grave, sometimes bullet shells and money are left at the headstone. Like it or not, this man's a legend in Uralla and to prove it... who knows where Constable Walker is buried ??

So as we flicked through the postcards Thundy was once again riding the range and doing that disappearing act he was so clever at. What an awesome cache! {FTF} at 1.56pm. TFTC MattyRx.
