Description

A Journey or Destination

The symbolic meaning of the bell in religions:

In Christianity, the bell is said to represent the 'voice of God.'

In China, bells are rung to communicate with spirits.

Strikes of the ship's bell

Timing of duty periods

Unlike civil clock bells, the strikes of a ship's bell do not accord to the number of the hour. Instead, there are eight bells, one for each half-hour of a four-hour watch. In the age of sailing, watches were timed with a 30-minute hourglass. Bells would be struck every time the glass was turned, and in a pattern of pairs for easier counting, with any odd bells at the end of the sequence.

Classical system

The classical, or traditional, system was:

  • Ship's bells are also used for safety in foggy conditions, their most important modern use.
  • On US naval vessels, bells additionally are rung as "boat gongs" for officers and dignitaries coming aboard or leaving the ship, in a number equivalent to the number of sideboysto which the visitor is entitled.
  • At midnight on New Year’s Eve, 16 bells would be struck – eight bells for the old year and eight bells for the new.
  • When a sailor has died he or she can be honoured with the sounding of eight bells; meaning "end of the watch". The term "eight bells" can also be used in an obituary, as a nautical euphamism for finished.

The ultimate respect for those who have passed is in the following song:

For Whom The Bell Tolls by Metallica

Make his fight on the hill in the early day
Constant chill deep inside
Shouting gun, on they run through the endless grey
On the fight, for they are right, yes, by who's to say?
For a hill men would kill, why? They do not know
Stiffened wounds test there their pride
Men of five, still alive through the raging glow
Gone insane from the pain that they surely know

For whom the bell tolls
Time marches on
For whom the bell tolls

Take a look to the sky just before you die
It is the last time you will
Blackened roar massive roar fills the crumbling sky
Shattered goal fills his soul with a ruthless cry
Stranger now, are his eyes, to this mystery
He hears the silence so loud
Crack of dawn, all is gone except the will to be
Now they see what will be, blinded eyes to see

For whom the bell tolls
Time marches on
For whom the bell tolls

A good book, a great film, an a-pealing puzzle, solved a bit quicker than I manage with most of yours.
Was in the area today with Lil Rafa chasing so GC caches, but rather than being a ding-a-ling and walking past, Lil Rafa prompted me to grab this one too. Not been found for a while, and all is ok at GZ.
I must get back up here to find the other GA caches hereabouts.
Thanks OldSaint for the adventure.

This area has changed quite a bit since I used to ride here about five years ago.
Straightforward find in the obvious place.
Back at home, I tried to remember how I solved it, and then remembered - quite a nice puzzle if you like crimson fish Smile
Cheers

Hello OldSaint, thanks for the puzzle cache.
I like this little puzzle, a few distractions, but nice and straightforward once I knew what I was looking for.
Today the GeoGSP and I headed to GZ, a nice little walking track that we have walked a couple of times before. As the numbers on my GPSr went down I started to look around for a likely GZ, and I identified a likely spot. The cache was spotted shortly after - very cool container. The log was signed and returned. On our way out we walked past a lady walking up the hill, and we stopped and had a bit of a chat about dogs (that happens a lot with the GeoGSP). Ding ding!

Hemingway's novel by the same name was a favourite of Mrs Y'stassie and her grade ten colleagues many years ago but this did not help solve this puzzle. Mr Y'stassie used the information provided and soon had a solution.

Today accurate coordinates led to a quick find of a popular Old Saint hide. Did we hear a bell ring as we left the cache hide???

Thanks for this cache. We didn't have to deviate much from our planned track to locate it.

"Hello OldSaint thanks for the cache.

I didn't find your cache when I was here earlier so I had to come back for it.
It was an easy and quick find.

Had some time today to attacked this cache and decided to come from the quarry side, which is a path I havent walked before. Although the walk was shorter, it was the same elevation so the legs were hurting by the time I hit the top.

Took a little while for the GPS to settle down, but eventually zeroed in on a location. Spotted the cache quickly then which is unusual for me.

For Whom the Bell Tolls
by Bee Gees

I stumble in the night
Never really knew what it would've been like
You're no longer there to break my fall
The heartache over you
I'd give it everything but I couldn't live through
I never saw the signs
You're the last to know when love is blind
All the tears and the turbulent years
When I would not wait for no-one
Didn't stop and take a look at myself
And see me losing you
When the lonely heart breaks
It's the one that forsakes
It's the dream that we stole
And I'm missing you more
Than the fire that will roar
There's a hole in my soul
For you it's goodbye
For me it's to cry
For whom the bell tolls
Seen you in a magazine
A picture at a party where you shouldn't have been
Hanging on the arm of someone else
I'm still in love with you
Won't you come back to your little boy blue
I've come to feel inside
This precious love was never mine
Now I know but a little too late
That I could not live without you
In the dark or the broad daylight
I promise I'll be there
When the lonely heart breaks
It's the one that forsakes
It's the dream that we stole
And I'm missing you more
Than the fire that will roar
There's a hole in my soul
For you it's goodbye
For me it's to cry
For whom the bell tolls
Now I know there'll be times like this
When I couldn't reach out to no-one
Am I never gonna find someone
Who knows me like you do
Are you leaving me a helpless child
When it took so long to save me
Fight the devil and the deep blue sea
I'll follow you anywhere
I promise I'll be there
When the lonely heart breaks
It's the one that forsakes
It's the dream that we stole
And I'm missing you more
Than the fire that will roar
There's a hole in my soul
For you it's goodbye
For me it's to cry
For whom the bell tolls

Joint FTF with Tassie Trekkers @ 7.52 am. Having solved the clever puzzle a plan was hatched for an early start for Mr T and Mr W to walk up Chimney Pot Hill before it got really hot. A search of GZ led to an intetesting hide. TFTP Deserves a favourite.
