Description

ICEM Cache

Hidden to be part of the ICEM series.

I've Cached Everywhere, Man is the largest cache series hidden in Australia. It is made up of the locations made famous by Lucky Star in the song "I've been everywhere" in 1962, lyrics by Geoff Mack.  Other towns have been included by some talented GCA members who have created some extra verses just for this ICEM series.

Wallumbilla is a town and locality in the Maranoa RegionQueensland, Australia.[2][3] In the 2016 census, Wallumbilla had a population of 388 people for the locality with 191 people living in the town itself.[1][4]

Geography[edit]

Wallumbilla is situated on the Warrego Highway, five hours by road west from Brisbane, just east of Roma in South West Queensland.[5]

To the north of Wallumbilla the Great Dividing Range (in this region no more than a bumpy watershed) passes roughly ESE to NNW. The town is sandwiched between Wallumbilla & Middle Creeks as they flow south toward the Condamine/Balonne River.[5]

Wallumbilla is on the Western railway line and was served by the now non-operational Wallumbilla railway station.[5]

History[edit]

The name Wallumbilla was the name of a pastoral run leased by Charles Coxen, The name is presumed to come from the indigenous Mandandanji language and reportedly means wallu=plenty and billa=jew fish.[2][3]

Wallumbilla Provisional School opened on 25 October 1893, becoming Wallumbilla State School on 1 September 1894.[6]

At the 2006 census, Wallumbilla had a population of 285.[7]

In the 2011 census, Wallumbilla had a population of 262 people.[8]

Heritage listings[edit]

Wallumbilla has a number of heritage-listed sites, including:

Amenities[edit]

Wallumbilla's Calico Cottage, open seven days a week, is the town's Visitor Information Centre. As well as this, Calico Cottage sells locally produced arts and crafts along with refreshments.

The town also contains three churches, as well as a Masonic Hall. Other amenities include a hotel/pub, a news agency, and a petrol station.

Wallumbilla has a heritage complex and visitor information centre. A Public Library operates in Wallumbilla in George Street.[10]

The Wallumbilla branch of the Queensland Country Women's Association has its rooms at 15 College Street.[11]

Education[edit]

Wallumbilla State School is a primary and secondary school (P-10) for boys and girls operated by the Queensland Government at 22 High Street. In 2016, the school had an enrolment of 106 students with 15 teachers (12 full-time equivalent) and 10 non-teaching staff (7 full-time equivalent).[12] Most of these students hail from properties surrounding town, as well as the high school students who attended primary school in the neighbouring town of Yuleba. The nearest state high schools offering Years 11 and 12 of secondary school are in Roma (40 km west) and Miles (90 km east).[5]

Economy[edit]

Traditionally Wallumbilla's main industries were dairy and beef cattle, now the main industries are cropping and beef cattle. The main crops include sorghum and wheat.

Locals believe that if not for the discovery of gas at nearby hub Roma, Wallumbilla would have flourished into a similar hub, as the discovery of gas in 1908 near Roma preluded the Wallumbilla cattle sale yards (a thriving business according to local history) to move up to Roma, accentuating its growth.

A major gas hub is in preparation for Wallumbilla, planned to start operation in 2014.[13]

After visiting the Calico Cottage and the History Hub we made our way round, passed the Hotel to this hide. As Mrs y'stassie did her customary circuit of the published coordinates she spotted a little echidna. It had burrowed into the long, dry grass in the shade at the base of a small tree and was sleeping through the heat of the day. Fortunately her GPS indicated that the cache was unlikely to be hidden under this tree. After several minutes poking around in the deep layer of bark, leaf and stick debris we heard the tell tale sound of stick on plastic followed by the retreival of the cache container. The container and contents were in good condition.

We are always pleased to find ICEM caches. We like the GCA trail of caches around Australia covering all states and the 2 territories. Thanks for placing this cache Youngoldfella.

Today was a short trip from Roma to Yuleba as we wanted to check out Judd's Lagoon. Result? We had plenty of time to grab each and every cache along the way including this one. It was easily found and quickly signed then replaced with a little more cover. TFTC

Parked the car and walked over to GZ - a choice of which one! The first one I picked was wrong, moved back, and looked and thought that one must be where the cache is. Bingo it was!. TFTC Youngoldfella

Day 3 of a road trip to Townsville with LuckyL10n and today was a big driving day hitting up a few GCA caches. We left Surat early and headed through Roma, Muckadilla, Wallumilla, Taroom, Theodore, Eidsvold before stopping the night at Mundubbera. All up 7 GCA caches and 30 odd from the other site.

No issues here and the cache was soon in hand and the log signed.

Thanks for another cache from your itinerary YOF.

#GA5594 - 11:50; Day three of the Townsville Mega adventure with Sol de lune and after spending the night in Surat, set out to collect the local caches before heading further afield. It would be a long day on the road as we added dragonZones and counties to our caching maps. The many places visited included Roma, Muckadilla, Wallumbilla, Jackson, Taroom, Theodore and Eidsvold and on to Mundubbera for the night. After heading back and forward through Roma, we headed along the highway and made Wallumbilla. Collected the nearby GC cache, then headed across the tracks to add another ICEM cache to the tally. A nice quick find and sign once we reached GZ. TFTC youngoldfella Very HappyClan Cerberus
