Description

Close to GZ you'll find a plaque recording that mailmen making the early 1800s mail run from Sydney to Melbourne, starting in November 1837, camped near this spot.

Today, if you're overnighting in Wangaratta, you'll find more services than they could have dreamed of at the adjacent caravan park, and if you're just passing through, the nearby Apex Park has toilets, BBQs, picnic benches, a great playground which has been well tested and approved by the younger generation of my familly, and opportunities to stretch your legs on walking paths in either direction along the banks of the Ovens River. There's lots of parking nearby too, and it's very close to the Murray to Mountains Railtrail if you're cycling by.

The cache is a black bison containing only a log sheet, so bring your own writing stick.

We were finishing an AdLab and noticed that this cache was not far away. We went across and checked out an object not far from the plaque. It didn't take long to locate the tiny container. Container and contents were in good condition.

Thanks for the cache Whheels. A nice little cache highlighting an interesting piece a Australian history.

Out and about with n0w0rries for a few hours today.

This was one of a couple of GCA we found in our travels.

Interesting read on the plaque.

Fortnightly services in the early 1800's is pretty good going.

Wangaratta Mega trip Day 2. It has taken quite some time to get this trip going so it is a great feeling to be on the road for a great weekend away with great caching with friends and new friends. Today was a day in two parts. I spent the morning with Nibbletricecakes, Gliss! & Smitten Granny doing as many of the city LAB caches as possible. So much variety there. We did a few of the caches we came across along the way. The after noon we were joined by Fitzy_1965 & MinnieK and headed down to Glenrowan to do the Ned Kelly caches. We also did the labs in Glenrowan before heading back to Wangaratta for a few high D/T caches. This was a great way to spend the day before the Mega !

Thanks for the cache Whheels

Down in Victoria for the long awaited (and necessarily postponed) Wangaratta MEGA, and a little holiday chasing the usual (oldies, counties and windmills). Just for something different we are adding to the hit list and the graves of the regionally buried dead premiers. Lol the things we will do for a cache! Joined up today with some extras from the canberra crew. Always great when we can cache together. Thanks for the cache.

The old black stump is falling to pieces and the cache is missing. I have replaced it at ground level towards the street side and under natural cover. It is now a coke bottle top log only. TFTC Clan MinotaurClan Minotaur

We're making our way from Wangaratta to Echuca today caching along the way. This was our last cache in Wangaratta before heading out, an easy find even though there was a work truck parked not far away. TFTC

#GA3857 - 16:50; Headed home solo after dropping the geoson in Melbourne to collect a car and decided a bit of caching as I head north is in order. Successful stops were made in Seymour, Avenel, Euroa, Benalla and Glenrowan before this last stop to visit the postman's camp. Parked close to GZ and was pleasantly surprised to make a quick find on a non-bushranger themed cache in the region! TFTC Whheells Very HappyClan Cerberus

First cache for the day as we leave the nearby caravan park after an overnight stay. A great little park too with wonderful facilities and very clean amenities . No time limit on the showers either!!
A quick find made here and then wandered over to read the nearby plaque.
Thanks.

We saw Skullracing returning from the hide as we went to locate it. My chauffeur for the day is not remotely interested in GA FTF but would think nothing of driving 150k at midnight for a GC FTF, however I’m not overly keen on chasing them, I’m just happy to find GA caches anywhere.
Thanks for hiding it here for us to find Whheels, after attending the nearby GC event today.
I’m just disappointed that it wasn’t April already, I could have used it for a P cache in April

I got the notification for this when it was published, and I thought I would grab it while I am in the area on Sunday for an event....
Which brings us to today, and throughout the event, I mentioned about the new GCA cache nearby and how I was going to pick it up after the event...thinking the whole time one of the attendees would have surely beaten me to the FTF......well...after said event, and lots of chatting, I fired up the flash new Garmin, and set off...
A short search ensued and I came up with the treasure, then I opened it up to.....a blank log book ..Woo-Hoo!..I got them, Ha!
So as I was strolling back to the car, all the second to finders came tearing up the road...I chatted and waved with a smile
