Description

I placed this cache while camped in the nearby free camp. It is a very popular area much loved by grey nomads and southerners escaping their chilly winters. John Macrossan was a very colourful politician in Queensland during the late 19th century and was chosen to attend Sir Henry Parkes' conference on Federation in 1890. Although he mostly represented the Conservative side of politics he stood firmly for miners' safety and against Chinese coolies coming to work on the goldfields.

The other information that I have found regarding this area is rather distressing and sad. It is about an horrific accident that occurred on 16 September,1948. An RAAF vehicle carrying about 40 civilian, but ex-service, personnel home to Charters Towers ran off the bridge and plunged 15 feet into the dry rocky river bed. Unfortunately 10 people were killed and 27 were injured. A terrifying ordeal for all including first responders and hospital staff. Obviously the new bridge is a good deal higher than the old bridge across the Burdekin River. Considering the most recent floods went over the  bridge, I wonder how often the road was cut before the new bridge was built.

Enjoy the cache, the camping area as well as Charters Towers.

Great Northern escape 2022 Day 80. Charters Towers to Townsville. Today after a relaxed start, I began my journey to Townsville by stopping at the gold mine multi for one last look, then on the road. Plenty of roadside stops and a few a bit further away for a slow drive that was interesting and good fun. except one DNF.

After doing the cache out by the highway, I ventured into the camping area for a look around. O many people ! Of well, happily the cache was a short walk into the scrubs so was accessible even with so many people about

Thanks for the cache Smittengranny

Made it through to Townsville last night and headed out to Charters Towers to try our hand at the variety of cache types in the area. Collected this cache on our way through. Good coords and after a short stroll, soon had the cache in hand, log signed and we were on the road again. TFTC Smittengranny Very HappyClan Cerberus

Arrived early to camp the night at Macrossan so there was plenty of light left to look for the cache. Can't image how long it would have taken in semi dark, we overlooked it long enough in bright sunlight. TFTC Smittengranny.

After a week in Townsville we are heading west, stopping here for the night so took the opportunity to hunt down this cache. Several suspects to pick from and very glad it was not in the prickly option. Bonus *FTF* @ 13.00 hrs.
