Description

This cache is placed at the old Garibaldi Settlement, adjacent to an old chinese stone oven.

The site is accessed off the Garibaldi Road, an unsealed road which begins off the Tebrakunna Rd at it's northern end.

There is a short track at the start of the trail, where a single vehicle can park. The track quickly becomes quite overgrown.

There are a number of relics in this area, including old hut foundations, a boxed penstock and various sluices and remnants of metal pipework.

At the time of placement, tracks through the bush to some of the points of interest were marked with survey tape and in places by old cans placed on tree branches.

Please take care when visiting - this site is an abandoned tin mine and has a number of large drop-offs. Children should be closely supervised.

Please respect the delicate nature of the site and tread lightly. Take only photos and leave only footprints.

Please bring your own pen.

Nature has worked its magic here and apart from the oven there was nothing seen on the walk to GZ that made me think I was walking through an old abandoned settlement.
Pretty much bush bashed my way there and after checking out the oven [which wasn't of a type I was expecting] a quick find was made of the container. Luckily it had quite a bright top as it was quite well covered with leaf and soil matter.
Found an easier way back by following the tapes.
Thanks HILBERTS.

Another super hidden relic that we would never have known about had it not been for caching. TFTC!

With nowhere to park on the road we drove up the track towards GZ but it gained us 50m if that before we had to turn round, it was as I was finishing doing this with the Goose on the other side of the car in the bush that I spotted the Hi-Viz walking up the hill towards me, oh-o we've been rumbled by the rozzers was my first thought but the woodentop was only asking if we were in fact searching for Trevor and ????? to which i replied no we were in fact geocachers searching for other things but filled him in on who and what we had seen in our travels over the last hour of so, happy with this information he bid me good day and left as I was apologising for wasting his time.

Back to the car and join up with the goose and i explain my delay as we work our way to GZ in a roundabout way, we find the cache and after adding our names to the logbook we discover the old over and take in the details for a moment before we spend a bit of time searching around for other hints of the former settlement.

Thanks for a great cache and showing me the area.

We drove up the little track here.... because we could. As we were turning around the cops appeared again. They asked of we were looking for somebody (they gave SSR some names) but we explained we were geocaching and that was the end of that. We were of no further interest. We had about 90m to go to get to GZ and once there made a quick find before checking out the old oven. We had a bot of an explore as we took a different 'path' back to the car.
Thanks for bringing us here Hilberts

Always great to explore these old historic sites.
The oven still in good nick too.
Cache was soon found in good condition.
On the way out followed some old tape to find another smaller oven.
Many thanks for showing us a great spot...much appreciated...cheers ST.

Took a slight detour this way after camping at Policeman’s Point. Heading back to Tomahawk to visit friends. Amazing heritage and relics scattered around the area. TFTC Clan Cerberus

#GA4101 - 09:40; I wasn't planning a caching day today, but with double dZ points on offer, I decided to get out nice and early for a quick trip and collect some of the newer caches around the north east, which have appeared since my last visit in some places I'd never been, or had not visited for many years. Collected a couple of GC caches in Branxholm before heading out to the Mt Paris Dam then on to Derby for coffee and a cache before heading along the Frome Road for a couple more. Did a U-Turn and headed back and along the dirt roads towards Pioneer. This was the next stop and after a bit of a bush bash, found myself at GZ for a quick find. Seems it's been busy here this weekend! TFTC Hilberts Very HappyClan Cerberus

This was our third visit to this area and it would have to be our favourite mainly due to the number of Chinese ovens scattered through the site. The one close to the hide has no roof but there is one about 80m away that is almost complete.

We were able to quickly locate the cache container and sign the log. Good to see this cache getting a few visitors - 2 today.

Thanks for this cache Hilberts. We enjoyed revisiting this interesting spot but felt sad that the ground was so dry it had lost its springiness. Hopefully rain in the future will return the texture and smell of the bush in this area.

Dropped into the old Garibaldi settlement today for a look around with the metal detectors, found some rusty tin, old nails and what looked like old tent pegs.
Also had a look for this cache which we did find.
