Description

A cache hidden while RESEARCHing others in the area

On recent trips to the Hartz Mountains, I have been fortunate enough to see Lyrebirds cross the road as I have driven to the top. Today, and I stress usually very early in the morning, was no exception. This prompted me to hide this cache.

Dark in colour, they look like a “road runner” as they speedily cross from one side of the road to the other.

The closest I’ve been to a lyrebird was at the Isabella & Reuben Falls cache and I quote from my log for that cache:

“On the way in, I was privileged to see a lyre bird in full flight as it winged its way through the trees. It followed me all the way to the falls where I had the honour of watching it feed. (Photographic evidence provided - albeit not very good photographs.) Had this bird as a companion as I climbed out from the falls. It tried to kick stones on my head from the ridge above the track.”

lyrebird is either of two species of ground-dwelling Australian birds  that compose the genus Menura, and the family Menuridae. They are most notable for their superb ability to mimic natural and artificial sounds from their environment, and the striking beauty of the male bird's huge tail when it is fanned out in courtship display. Lyrebirds have unique plumes of neutral-coloured tail feathers and are among Australia's best-known native birds.

Lyre birds are native to Victoria and New South Wales, and were introduced to Tasmania during the 1930s and '40s, and so are indeed an introduced species to Tasmania. And I should also point out we have other Australian native species that have been introduced to Tasmania as well.

Hope you see one on your visit to the HARTZ.

This would have to be the favourite find for us today. What a beautiful tree and the micro environment on this trunk was stunning - several clusters of tiny fungi, fruiting mosses and small plants including a tiny myrtle tree as well as the delightful little grotto concealing the cache container. All was in good condition. While Mrs Y'stassie was signing the log two cars stopped to make sure we were OK. Both were groups of young adults. Nice to know that people are still willing to check on others.

Thanks for this great hide OldSaint. We took many photos before we left. No Lyrebirds today.

Hi Oldsaint

Was out and about today collecting a few GCA caches while the weather was ok. Some blue sky was about - but not much. Didnt get rained on, so an advantage there.

No lyre bird spotted, but there were scratchings around the area where the cache was, so I cant deny they live here.

Enjoyed reading the cache page! We've seen many of them in NSW but not so much here. We were doing a cache once on the edge of a cliff and there was a huge nest nearby. We must have startled the lyrebird inside as it flew out like a phoenix and let out the scariest shrill like scream. I nearly fell off the cliff! Anyway, didn't spot one today but the cache was an easy find. TFTC OldSaint!
Cheers,
The Hancock Clan

One more cache before we head home. There was no intention to come here today but when the new GC cache down the hill didn't show any online logs we diverted and came down for a quick visit. Nice little tree cave. The coords made it another quick find. Now for the long drive home.
Thanks OldSaint
