Description

In travelling around I have seen many buildings that have been converted to something other than what they were originally for e.g

...used to be a church now it is a house

...used to be a school now it is a cafe and art gallery

...used to be a mill now it is a cafe/craft/ second hand shop

...used to be a phone box now it is a small library or book exchange

You get the idea.

All that is needed is a photo and a bit of a blurb about it.

Congratulations to Cybergran V for a very quick off the mark FTF

The former Bungowannah Methodist Church. Now a private home with a few add ons to the structure. Spoke to the occupant briefly. Said it is a lovely home although a bit hard to heat up with the high (cathedral ceiling). This is the second iteration of the methodist Church at Bungowannah. The first church was destroyed by a cyclone in 1913. Six years later this church was opened with a service and a concert and tennis matches to celebrate. The church closed in 1976.

St Peters Anglican Church, Glenbrook
now
Glenbrook Underground Coffee Shop

My mother was Christened in this church in the 1920s.
When we moved back to the Blue Mountains in the 1980s, it was Glenbrook Garden Centre.
Before Covid the Garden Centre moved downstairs and the backyard, and the old church became The Church Cafe.
In 2022 it was taken over, and is now Glenbrook Underground Coffee Shop.
The original plaque is still next to the door.

Must have passed this old church hundreds of time since this cache was published but finally had the opportunity to stop and take the required photo. Aberdeen Abbey was built in 1900 but is now a private residence. The main building has been extensively renovated with 2 bedrooms on the mezzanine and an open plan living, dining, kitchen area downstairs.
For as long as I can remember this has been a residence and I have been unable to find the date in which is stopped being a church.
Thanks for the cache.

Hi corunnaroad
This building is now "The Tower Restaurant" and is located in Huonville, Tasmania
Previously it used to be a recreation hall the town - that was before I can remember, but I have talked to some old timers who remember playing Badminton within
After that, (and I can remember borrowing book from it), it was Huonville's Library
For a short time after it's use as a library expired, it stood vacant and was then converted by friends into a Pizza Parlour and Restaurant which is now known as The Tower
We love eating in the restaurant (great food) but don't eat the pizza
TFTC and cheers

This old church in Beechworth is now an antique shop. Looks like 2 shops, one called Gospel Antiques, which is a great name considering the location and Beechworth Antiques. So, still a church looking building, however it has a different life these days.

Thanks again Corunnaroad....

This beautiful building was Downer House, built in 1876/77 for Sir William Downer who was a South Australian politician. In 1924 it was converted into a residential college for University students and is now St Marks College.

This school closed as a bigger one was built nearby. It wasn't looked after for quite some time then it was taken over by a collective and now houses a coffee shop, antique shop, craft shop, yoga school and other things. Good use made of a neglected place and very popular too.

This simple building of regional architectural significance, was designed by J M Anderson and built by William Deveraux Harburt in 1892. The building was used as the municipal offices and council chambers for the former City of Doncaster and Templestowe until 1957.

The building was renovated for the Doncaster Templestowe Artists Society Inc in 1987 and re-opened as an art studio/gallery in 1988. It forms part of a group of buildings comprising the Church of Christ and Doncaster Primary School.

They were used until the new station was opened in 1978. The population of Nowra in 1871 was 1705, in 1978 the population of Nowra/Bomaderry had grown to a combined 18,000. There are few 'used to be' in Geelong. I pick one here
St Giles's Church was built in the Decorated Gothic style in 1861 and is constructed in basalt with Barrabool sandstone dressings.
St Giles Church was last used for services in 1977 when the formation of the Uniting Church in Australia made the building redundant and the congregation moved to the former Wesley Church in Yarra St.
I'm a Laaaaaaaady, duh!

Friar’s Cafe was previously a church in Fryer’s Street Shepparton
