Description

Take a photo of someone making lace

Lots of the skills our grandparents had are being lost, due to so many other things available to occupy our time.

Also lace collars, fancy trims, and doileys are no longer in fashion.

It is far easier, cheaper, and less time consuming to purchase replicas made by machines.

Your challenge is to find and photograph someone actually making lace the old fashioned way, with wooden spindles.

Craft shows and lost trades fairs are ideal places to search,

This is an old photo of me making lace in Portarlington many yeas ago now. I would travel down with my friend who introduced me to this craft.
The demo was always outside but recently has moved indoors to the Geelong Woollen Mill as it has become a museum. My eyes are now not so good Sad and I need a magnifying light to be successful. Smile
Thanks for bringing back the memories Cybergran V ClappingClapping

Our daughter, chocolate_ali, is very talented with various areas of craft. Intricate embroidery is her speciality but she can turn her hand to anything. A couple of years ago a dear friend passed on and left her lace making equipment to chocolate_ali with a fine collection of wooden bobbins and special pins. the items sat unused for some time until chocolate_ali needed some lace for part of an embroidery creation. She taught herself to make lace (from You Tube of course) and has created what she needed for her embroidery and then a number of Christmas decorations. The attached photo shows three images of chocolate_ali making a lace star for another embroidery project. Thanks Cybergran V for the cache.

I was fortunate to be able to attend the Lost Trades day at Bendigo and watch this amazing woman making lace.
She was following a tiny pattern and her hands moved so quickly as she created this beautiful piece of intricate lace.
It was almost mesmerising to see the material emerging. How many hours she must have spend doing this during her lifetime to become so proficient at this skill.
