Description

Growing zucchini's can be fraught with problems, just as your bushes are looking lovely and starting to produce zucchinis, they suddenly develop powdered mildew and the leaves become skeletonised and the plant dies.

This year I read that you need to plant them like tomatoes, next to a stake, and, as they grow, softly tie the main stem to the stake, removing lower leaves that come in contact with the soil, as it is those leaves which will become diseased first.

Apparently all the zucchini fruit grow from the central stem, so if you continue to tie the central stalk to the stake, as it grows, you should get a continuing crop.

I'm giving it a try this year.

There is no Codeword to log this tutorial but I will be interested if anybody tries to grow zucchinis in this manner, how successfully it works.

Congratulations youngoldfella on FTF

In line with amendments made to requirements for listing and finding a Locationess geocache, this geocache has been reviewed and found not be in line with the listing requirements.

https://wiki.geocaching.com.au/wiki/Locationless_cache
Armchair style Locationless caches where the finder is not required to explore the real world, identify a location and accompany the "Find" with photographic evidence are no longer accepted.
A Locationless cache listing must require the finder to locate an object or perform a task in the real world, collect the co-ordinates and log the find with accompanying photographic evidence.

The geocaching community would like to thank you for listing this Locationess geocache and congratulations to all that found this locationless geocache.

As the geocache no longer meets the requirements we will archive the cache listing.

Thakns for todays interesting read.

Must say there is no vertical gardens in my house.

If there was not sure it would be zucchini's though.

Thanks for the tutorial. I have two zucchini plants in at the moment and will give it a try growing vertically as you have suggested. Very Happy

We have a massive vegie garden but have never attempted to grow zucchinis. We rarely eat them but have a deal with the next door neighbour who grows them and then we swap vegies as they are ready. An old fashioned barter system really.
Thanks for the tutorial and maybe one day I might try growing them.

We don't eat many zucchinis so we don't think we will grow them. We did have a veggie garden at our previous house but just haven't had time to create on at this house yet. We have the area allocated but not done yet - work and volunteering roles keep getting in the way.

Thanks for the tutorial Cybergran. Unfortunately we don't have the space in our current house for a vegie garden, but we have grown them in the past.
They always provide a very bountiful crop.

Have grown zuccs a few years back but with only two of us at home we wouldn't use them all up. Do like to make zucc spaghetti for a healthier option. TFTC Smile

Have never tried to grow Zucchinis this way
But have grown zucchinis as normal - love them baked
Other that I have grown using your methods have been:
Broad beans, peas, tomatoes and passion fruit
Thanks for the tutorial
TFTC and cheers

We don't grow zucchinis as they are not one of our preferred gardens produce. With limited space, we prefer other vegetables and fruit. However we have seen pumpkins grown vertically which keeps them from spreading, keeps them off the ground (reducing the chance of rot), requires stands to be built to support the heavy weight and requires constant pruning to limit their spread and produces very good smaller variety of pumpkins. Thanks Cybergran V for the cache.

We have some zucchinis that I have grown from seed indoors and have just planted them out , lets hope the wildlife dont get to them as this is my main reason the plants fail.

31-Oct-20
We will give it a try and see if we get a better survival rate - Thanks Cybergran V .

Haven't tried zucchinis, but have tried cucumbers with the grandkids. Watch them grow, then a quick wash and eat as a snack. Good stuff.

Thanks Cybergran V. Very Happy

We no longer grow veggies as we are permanently on the road nowadays but absolutely love to eat them. Grilled on the BBQ they are delicious, and added to stir frys etc. Youngoldfella makes me very jealous as we always buy the beautiful produce available when we are in Qld. Dancing
My Dad always has a few plants in his garden so I’ll give him the tip. Many thanks Cybergran V

Well I will pass that tip onto Aan as he is having a bumper year with his vegies this year. Thanks for that helpful tip Val. ClappingClapping

What a great idea, will have to try. Thanks Val.

Thank you for this information. We don’t grow zucchinis as they are not a favoured vegetable. I will be interested to read how yours progress.

Thanks for this advice Cybergran ... useful to know if I ever try to grow zucchinis.

Living most of the year on the road, we do not grow anything. We do try to buy our fresh fruit and veggies from farmers markets and roadside stalls.

Thanks CyberGran V, Great advice.
I Have done this in the past and produced Zucchinis until Autumn.

We grew them last year and had a great crop, just planted them for this year so will have to see how we go.

A possible thought - I tried to get cherry tomatoes to grow up on a trellis and they did not do very well at all. I was told that the sap in the plant is not designed to go up when the plants normal position is lateral. Good luck, let us know how it goes.

Sorry I didn't try but my son in law grown the tomatoes instead of Zucchinis so will ask him SmileSmile Thanks Crybrean V WhistleWhistle

Years ago I grew zucchinis, and a lot of other vegetables, hydroponically.
It was an interesting way to grow things, and it was very successful.

I have had on and off success with zucs will try this method. TFTC

Sounds really interesting. Will have a go when we plant ours which is usually about April here in Darwin. Thanks for the good idea.

Never tried zucchini’s since I don’t really like them but we have three

30-Oct-20
I will grow Strawberries as I have them in the garden but it is cheaper for me to buy a lot of our vegetables up here as we have grower stalls all over the place and can buy a bag of Zucchinis for $2.00. TFTTC Very HappyVery HappyClan MinotaurClan Minotaur

I realised when I was finalising caches published this month, that I hadn’t completed my Tutorial for October.
With the month rapidly disappearing this is my late entry.
It was intended for later on to show if it is successful, but now is the time to plant if you want to try it yourself.
My 6 small plants have been planted and staked in readiness, and I will add more photos as they progress.
