Description

This cache is located within Glenns Reserve, a very little known about reserve opposite the Pound Bend tunnel exit in Warrandyte.

Glenns Reserve is a wonderful place to relax and soak up some of the Australian bush. Its a magical area of open woodlands, wetlands and riparian vegetation where people seldom visit. Infact I spent the most part of my year 12 studying down here and only once have I come across anyone!

Some History...

This reserve, as you will notice walking around, has a reasonable amount of infrastructure built into it which is for the most part, now in a state of disrepear. The area was origionally earmarked to become an environmental centre for Parks Vic, thus the boardwalks around the wetlands. There was origionally planned to be a bridge accross the Yarra from Pound Bend, however for whatever reason that never happened and as a result of this the plans were never carried out. I would imagine that this is because the access to this area is somewhat off the normal track.

A Great Walk...

If you are going to attempt the cache, park at  S37 43.955  E145 11.848  and jump the fence. Its all Parks Vic land and they allow visitors so all is good! If you wanted to explore the area but don't know where to start I'll let you know of the track i usually follow...

You follow the main road down the hill untill you reach the buildings, have a look round before taking the road to the left that you would have just past. This takes you down to a landing just above the yarra. If you look closely you will see some of the old pylons from a bridge that once spanned the yarra here many many years ago. Continue following the Yarra downstream along the track and have a look at the wetlands. These realy come in to their own in the winter and i have very often seen turtles down here, so keep an eye out. Keep walking along passing the old boardwalks but beware, they are in bad condition so i don't recomend that you walk along them. If you keep an eye on the other side of the river you should be able to see the exit of the pound bend tunnel. Keep going along the track and eventually you will come across the cache near the windmill. At the time i placed this cache the wetlands here were more or less empty... i've never seen them empty so this was quite a supprise and really brings it home as to how much trouble (waterwise) we are in at the moment. Once you have foun d the cache you should continue up keep going downstream to find the other cache here called "Some Inspiration" at S37 44.305  E 145 11.560 which is a gc.com listing. Then return to the windmill and continue up the clearing where you should come across heaps of kangaroos and a realy large open space. As you walk up the slope take note of all the trees here, they were all revegetated about 15 years ago, looks good but could use some understorey and ground cover! All in all its interesting to see some of the older revege projects (i'm also an enviro nerd!). Keep on walking accross the field to the buildings and return back to your car. Also keep your eyes out for the albino kangaroo which i have seen here many times, its a very interesting charactor.

The Cache...

This cache is not so much about the difficulty in the final hide, its about the location so don't expect that you have to climb the structure. Its an eclypse container slightly camoflagued and hidden away. It shouldn't be a difficult hide to find. Enjoy this spot, its one of my favourite places just to go walking and to chill out!

As part of the GCA Summer Scavenger Series I needed to find a cache that had not been found for more than 12 months. As this one was last logged in Dec 2014 and it is less than 10km from my home it was my target for today.
Although I did not follow the track described I found the route to the cache quite easy. I think that I followed the kangaroo paths through the long grass and when I reached the clearing there were many sets of ears and eyes appearing above the grass. The wetlands appeared to have plenty of water in it as there were lots of frog noises amongst the bird calls.
I took some photos of the windmill to use for the Scavenger Series.
Thank you TeamGeoPlesk for placing this cache.

I have been looking at doing this cache for ages and today I found myself in the area with a bit of time to spare so headed over. I thoroughly enjoyed the walk down to the windmill and came back along the river for a while. Only a couple of roos spotted through the trees today but I did see an echidna so that makes up for it.
Found without too much trouble at gz.
Thanks TeamGeoPlesk for the cache.

Very Happy loved this walk to find the Cache ... have lived in the area for a long time and hadn't done this walk ... awesome! Got to the windmill and had to search for a bit as there was alot of undergrowth but found it eventually! Thanks for placing this cache .. I took lots of photos of the landscape and the historical items and of course the roos! A great walk that I highly recommend Very Happy

I decided to drop by here while on the way to work this morning. It took me a bit longer than expected to get to the parking spot Embarassed but once there, I enjoyed a very pleasant, if not damp underfoot, walk to GZ where I finally found the stash at 09:35 after a few minutes of scrounging.

What a pleasant spot with plenty of 'roos (and not small ones either Shocked) around to enhance the experience Very Happy.

BTW, I think the wetlands bit has improved a tad since you placed the cache Very Happy.

Finally! Attempted in July 2011 with my then 6 year old daughter and to her immense disappointment, we just couldn't find it... Well, this time around with a 10 year old boy to decrypt the hint and the laser eyes of 6 year old boy, the cache was found! We added a piece of paper as the log was full. Took a bell and left a footy card - now worthless because folded Smile

23/10/2011 13:34 Saw reference to this cache when I was at "Some Inspiration" nearby. So rather than read the listing I simply walked to the obvious GZ based on the cache name and moments later I had the eclipse tin in hand. The log is pretty small for an eclipse and is now over full. I managed to squeeze my name in pencil on the base. TFTC TeamGeoPlesk TNLN SL

My first GCA cache I believe - nice to support. This added some interest to visiting the GC cache nearby. This is a beautiful bit of unknown parkland and I recommend a visit. My six year old son loved the windmill.

We didn't see the albino kangaroo but we saw plenty of their mob.
Thanks for taking us to this lovely little park.

I have live in this area most of my life and never been here before. I was always deterred by the closed gate, but what great spot...

Couldn't find either of the caches here though...

Thanks for letting me in on the hidden park.

Found at 11.00 without too much trouble.

Thanks for bringing me here TeamGeoPlesk. I would never have known about this park otherwise. Thoroughly enjoyed your suggested walk and the highlights along the way. There were obviously substantial plans for this area what with the boardwalks, buildings, underground power etc - it is probably just as well they never eventuated. Its good that we still have secret areas like this.

I was curious about the bank of rafts anchored in the nearby wetland. Approx 1.5m x 1m made of 90mm PVC piping with large plastic tupperware tubs sitting on them. The tubs were half filled with water and seemed to have stocking material stretched over them. I am assuming they are some sort of research project.

We noted the reference to this cache in the log of the nearby GC cache and LZZ(f) realised that we had already passed close by the likely location. The "camouflaged" container was surprisingly easy to spot although getting to it was not for her liking - LZZ(m) had to retrieve it. Troubles indeed.

The Coffee and Cache gang put on their winter gear, except for Geoboy who didn't think it was going to rain, and set out down the track past some wonderful scenery. We were astonished by the relative remoteness and lack of human occupation, although we did wonder about the occupants of the other car parked at the entrance.

As we approached the cache is started to rain and we spied two people at the GZ. It turned out to be Franklj who we had not met before, although we have done numerous of their caches. They had been aiming for the nearby GC cache and had stumbled upon Windmill almost by accident.

Meeting Franklj was a huge coincidence since I had just emailed him last night to ask about a cache of theirs, and here they were in person! As the rain down we had a very nice chat and got somewhat wet, particularly Geoboy, whilst I signed the log which (Mrs) Franklj had been good enough to find for us.

Franklj left us to return to their vehicle whilst we pressed on to the GC cache. We took a heap of pictures in this unique place.

Thanks TemGeoPlesk - a wonderful experience.

Lovely to meet Coffee and the whole caching family at this cache - we gave Steve an easy find! My wife and I were at 'Some Inspiration' not far away where I read out the description of the cache. My wife went searching for the structure and I searched nearby for a cache. We were both successful which was great! Thanks TeamGeoPlesk.

Found by Bob at 1530

OK, I got my chores done at home in good time, so I managed to slip out this afternoon for a couple of hours and get the crop of new caches around Eltham-Warrandyte. This was the first - and a nice, easy find it was after an enjoyable drive on "less travelled" roads and a good walk through, what appeared to be, an old property which has been reclaimed by Parks, Victoria. I didn't see a soul while I was here, but did share the area with a good number of kangaroos and rabbits.

Thanks Team GeoPlesk - it was a genuine "Southern Cross" windmill too.

Our first challenge was finding the parking spot which shows our expertise or ineptitude level and lack of preparation. But after a tour around - Thank you and well done TeamGeoPlesk, exactly the kind of cache we enjoy, A little known spot that we probably would never visit, beautiful, peaceful (we so dislike these urban caches where you can't search properly for fear of being seen), a pleasant walk giving us "olds" much needed exercise and a "found it" (1.00 pm) as a bonus! Even a 3TF. LNTN. Took a bit of trash out. Would have loved to have stayed a while but our detour cost us time and we had a commitment. Saw the Tunnel, though, and took a photo for later posting.Congratulations Teamgeoplesk. Maybe we will meet at Australia's First Mega Event (visit link)

~16:30 Easy find but could not convert for double with the GC nearby. Thanks.

Out on a damp MTB ride to find the nearby GC cache and decided to wander over and grab this one too.

Interested spot, the dilapidated boardwalks make for some careful riding on.

Thanks for the cache.

Fantastic area. Never seen so many kangaroos in one place before, and never imagined they would be so close to Melbourne. They weren't much help with directions but we found the actual cache pretty easily anyway.

23-May-09
Go out and get them guys, we are about to move across Melbourne so this will be the last for our GCA caches out here, but stay tuned for many more to come over craigieburn way! Our parents live just up the road so i'll be here quite often for maintanace.

As a bonus for those seeking a FTF for this cache, there is another one just near by which will be listed on GC sometime tommorow night... so you will get a head start if you are interested. Its called 'Some Inspiration' and is located at S 37° 44.305 E 145° 11.560

Good luck and enjoy!
