Description

As you drive along Brand Highway in this area, you'll see some of the history of the Greenough area. The "Leaning Trees" of Greenough belong to a native Western Australian species, and the characteristic lean is caused by the constantly strong southerly winds that burn off growth on the windward side (flagging). While very hardy, this tree (obviously) has weak branches, but the growth on the leeward side of the tree is more normal.

This is an easy cache placed specially for tourists or travellers in Western Australia. Access to this cache is on the western side of the highway in a small parking area. This spot is without doubt the best place for a photograph of any of these unusual trees, which are so clearly deformed by the brute force of prevailling winds. Stop and take a break from driving, see the power of nature at work for yourself and claim a cache all in one hit.

To claim this cache, you will need to answer 3 questions correctly. The answers can be found at GZ. A safe parking area large enough for several cars or a car and caravan is available on the Northbound (western) side of the highway.

You are welcome to embellish your log with a photo if you wish - just not one that displays any of the answers.

These trees certainly do lean over. They remind me of the trees I saw on the Chatham Islands. TFTC Team Red Roo.

This Incredible Tree and the trees in the surrounding district have always amazed us as we drive north through Greenough.
The country is wonderful up there, usually nice and sunny by the time we head up that way.
I noticed this cache and was wondering how it had been logged during Isolation and looking at the questions, I was able to do some research, very interesting reading.
I have photos of this tree and will add them as soon as I find them.
Thanks for the cache Team Red Roo Smile)

I discovered that other people has found this cache while in isolation, so I decided on doing the same. After some research, I found the answers to the questions and now I'm logging my find. I hope this isolation ends soon so I can go for a holiday and visit the location for real. TFTC, history & geography lessons! Very Happy

P.S. If you are unhappy with me logging it with this method, please let me know and I will change this to a note.

It's been many years since we drove this way. Amazing trees.

On our first caching expedition around Western Australia in 2011 we found GCMQWM. The horizontal trees fascinated us and of course we took lots of photos. The day we visited was sunny and calm with no evidence of the winds that are common here.

We had the answers to the questions in our photos and have added a photo of Mrs Y'stasie in front of one of the trees.

Thanks for this cache Team Red Roo and a chance for a walk down memory lane.

Love this tree and I always try and get Mr dimor to stop as we pass, sadly only sometimes he lets me get my way Laughing
Greenough is an area deep in history and a great place to spend some time soaking it all in.
