Description
One of the best places in the world to see the stunning, speedy Regent Parrot
An easy-to-find cache along the river; that bush is called Nitre Goosefoot.
Take some time to enjoy the surroundings. If you're here in early spring keep your eyes on the River Red Gum trees for noisy, bright yellow Regent Parrots. You might just hear a swoosh as a mob zooms overhead, travelling from their nesting sites along the river to their feeding grounds in the mallee. They're a beautiful bird, quite rare and threatened in Australia.
Hidden by Nangiloc / Colignan and District Primary School as part of Biodiversity month (Sept 2009). Supported by Kulkyne Way Junior Landcare Group.
We hope you enjoy the cache and find out some more about our ace mallee creatures.
Logs
We parked on the road above the hide area and opposite the primary school whose students were responsible for placing this cache. We walked down one of the paths that led towards GZ and started our hunt. The area was very dry and many of the shrubby bushes appeared to be dead.
We had no luck locating the cache so widened our search. We spotted something that looked worth closer scrutiny. In the open, under a brick we found what remains of this cache. The container has succumbed to UV and weather and is badly broken. Ants have made a home in what is left of the base. Surprisingly the contents are OK. A previous finder has placed the log book in a 200ml sistema and it is in very good condition.
When we opened the log book we found that at least half a dozen other teams had signed the log but had not logged their find on line. We added our team to the list of finders, put everything together and covered it with bark, sticks and leaf litter as we did not have a replacement container with us.
Thanks for this cache galahhill we do hope someone still monitors the web site and is able to maintain this cache. Unfortunately there were no Regents parrots in the area today.
A fun idea to spread the word about the beautiful, and threatened, Regent Parrot.
