Description

This cache is placed near Radford's Monument.

Mt Wellington plays an important part in Hobart’s history and this is another point of interest on the mountain that reflects this.

George Harvey Radford, aged 19, died in the 1903 Go-As-You-Please Race which ran from Hobart to the Pinnacle and back. He was a bootmaker from Newtown who apparently met with an “accident” on the way down.

Easiest access is to park and walk past Rocky Whelans Cave, continuing until you reach the junction with Radford’s track.  There you will see the small monument, which had a small bunch of native flowers placed at its base on the day of placement.

Thanks for the cache Dippedidooda. It was a glorious summer's Christmas Eve, so RLD4963, the GeoGSP and I decided to head to the mountain to find a few GCA caches. It was a few degrees cooler up here, but still very warm, sunny and crystal clear - magnificent day to be out enjoying the mountain. It's been a few years since I walked Radford's track - I can certainly remember walking up the track from Silver Falls a couple of times with my boys who are now adults. I also remember taking the short-cut track - Reids Track - once, straight uphill. The thing I remember most about the walk up was meeting a couple of mtb'ers on their way down - a surprise for everyone, but mostly the two of them that had to take evasive action to avoid us, and the ended up in the shrubbery - but no injuries so all good. We didn't see anyone on this track today - venturing down from the Springs, before a return trip uphill. There have been a number of improvements to the track, a lot of them to slow the mtb'ers on their descent. Good to see the track being looked after. It was a nice easy find once we got to the monument. Thanks for placing a cache here Dippedidooda, a very worthy place.

Out and about with the Rafas caching before Christmas, there were some caches to find at the springs. after a walk down to the corner, this cache was found and signed and replaced as hidden, TFTC TNLN> log dry

Hi Dippi, had a nice stroll in the drizzle, sunshine and wind today. Cache is still there but everything wet, swag rusty, logbook soaked. Removed everything, dried out and replaced with a waterproof log and GCA stash note in zip locked bag. Fellow finders will need to bring a pen. Found this and its mate at the higher elevation and paused to reflect. Will claim as part of the Summer Scavenger Series. TFTC

Sue spotted a very likely location, but she decided it would be Peter who had to put his hand into the unknown. TFTC Dippedidooda

The lower slopes of mount Wellington have a lot of tracks that can be used for a circuit walk, and today we went from O'Gradys, up Betts then on the north south to the Springs and down Radfords. On checking beforehand it was discovered that the took us past four caches that we hadn't yet scored.

The GPS had me going in circles when I arrived at the monument. Eventually it settled on the right place. I had to be patient for a little while whilst awaiting a number of muggles to pass before retrieving and returning the cache. The container is damp inside, and log book is starting to soak up some of the moisture.

Found it after visiting the cave, nice pleasant relaxing walk. TFTC.

Even though it was getting late in the afternoon, we thought that this and another cache were not that far away that we could not attempt them before the light really began to fade. We found a good parking spot on the Pinnacle Road but had to watch carefully for passing traffic as we walked back to Woods Track (which was signposted "To Radfords Track"). It was a pleasant walk - the air temperature was still reasonable given that the sun was now behind Mount Wellington. A short way up and we noticed a sign pointing to Rocky Whelan's Cave. We went in there, found the cache and then returned to the main track leading to Radford's Monument. It was great walking through the carpet of leaf little and the clean bush smell was a lovely experience. After a short time we got to the track junction and Radford's Monument. The race certainly attracted many entries - wonder if the trophy had a liquid component? This was certainly a tragic race with two deaths. We assume that very few of the participants trained prior to the event (as happens today) and that this may have contributed to the initial 50% non-starters and the two deaths. As there were no muggles, we were able to look around unhindered. After a brief search the cache was located and was in hand. Given the hide of the cache, we were surprised that there was about 5mm of water in the container with no obvious signs of how the water could have got in. The log book was in it's own plastic bag and was quite dry. After signing the log, we drained the water out, and dried things out as much as a brief visit would allow. TFTC Dippedidooda and for bringing us here.

After a night at junction cabin we wandered back to the springs and drove down to the start of woods track. I quick walk across to the monument were my and geo mate Dave (muggle) paid our respects. Found the cache quickly, sign te log and returned to hiding hole. The cache is moist inside, not as far was wet. I wiped out as best I could with what I had with me. Mayb the seal has gone, so you might want to keep an eye on it in the future.

It's still there! All seems fine. The hint gives fairly precise detail as to its location.

Thanks Dippy, took your advice and found this after finding Rocky Whelan's Cave. Arriving at GZ there were three female muggles sitting around the monument. After a chat with them they continued on their trek and we were able to retrieve the cache after dodging three mountain bikers travelling at high speed down the track. TFTC We would be very interested to know how George died.

It was great to be able to do another wonderful, thoughtfully placed Dippedidooda cache today! Love it!

About a year and a half ago, we nearly got killed here by a group of bike riders that came screaming down the track. Today we just had a group of screaming kids to follow down the hill. TFTC!

What a lovely track this is - in all my years I've never walked up it.
Thanks!

Hi again Dippi, got this one at 1537hrs after a visit to the cave. Cache in good condition. Again, never knew this monument existed nor that such event occurred so long ago - both a race to the top of the mountain and that someone had passed away in the effort. Don't you love caching and what it teaches you as well as the fitness aspect of it too. TFTC and cheers again, OldSaint.

Though I'm on the mountain fairly regularly, none of my loops take me past this spot, so I modified one of them today to pick this cache up.
I always wonder what actually happened to the poor bloke - a fitting reminder that anything can happen up on the mountain.
Was sprung by another walker just after I opened the cache, but he seemed unconcerned, just greeted me and kept walking!
Thanks for the cache Dippy.

Well, unlike Richard's Monument, at least we knew where this monument was. We have been here before, but it is a great short walk in a lovely location and having a cache here just made it better. T plain cheesecake. L frog magnet. Thanks again Dippy

Beaten by red tag for first to find but didn't have rain or wind or snow. Actually the sun was out but it was a little cold.
Found easily and logged but I may have forgotten to put my name on it...
TNLN, thanks

Well done on FTF Red Tag, and thanks for putting in the stash note!

07-Oct-09
Mr red tag and I set our in the less than perfect weather today to do a few caches that involved a bit of a walk.
This was our first for the day and apart from driving right past the start of the track and having to turn around it was all fairly straight forward after that.
The monument did leave us wondering what happened to this poor kid, obviously the word 'accident' wasnt that he couldn't find a toilet in time.
Thanks for showing us this place Dippy.
