Description

Welcome to Team Ladava's first Virtual cache replacing the archived GC regular

The Heritage listed Rail Bridge over Kismet Creek, was constructed c.1859 on the Melbourne-Bendigo line for the Victorian Railways. These were the formative years of railway development in Victoria.

Constructed of basalt, it comprises five arched spans with facing to semi-circular arches on piers, with transverse abutments to the creek. It carries a double railway line and is a rare example of mid-nineteenth century stonemasonry. The transverse abutments are unusual and join an equally rare basalt channel.

We love these old structures and are in awe of the engineering and craftsmanship of the designers and builders.

Yes indeed - a very most fine bridge! And so old too! I always admire the craftsmanship in these structures! Thanks!

As we walked towards GZ we first heard and then saw a train going along the embankment. Then we turned the corner and saw this truely magnificent bridge - a breathtaking sight. From our direction of approach the bridge was majestic with the multiple arches framing great vistas. Two photos have been added to the Gallery: the entire bridge with one of us on the path in the forground; and, one of us standing in front of one of the arches. TFTC

A trip to Sunbury for an appointment gave me the perfect opportunity to chase a few caches left over from our last visit.
Today I had a quick look for the nearby GC without success due to persistent muggle traffic. I did manage to snap this impressive viaduct on the way back to the car.

Thanks Team Ladava.

A huge day of caching that started in the wee hours of the morning and ended at about 9:30pm with one exhausted trail runner. I had agreed to pick up my caching buddy jsmyong55 at a reasonable hour and when we had finished he and he had added another 120 caches or so to his tally. It was a nice way to end our partnership as J is heading back to Malaysia soon. It will be hard to find someone to cache with that can fill his shoes.

I apologise to all the CO’s for using a generic log but after the 130+ caches for the day for me I’m too exhausted to even think of writing an individual log for each. Thanks to each and every one of you.

Found this cache while on a "Sunbury Sunday" geocaching day!
Nice part of the world it is.

Found by Roma and Max.
Another trip down memory lane and a reminder of many enjoyable geo caching times spent around this area when we took every opportunity to visit family who resided here then.
A truly magnificent bridge although it does have some challenges to that title within this part of Victoria as the particular construction material was readily available and a favourite of the times when these bridges were established.
Thank you once more Ian & Sandra for this reason to visit again.
Regards,
from Romax.

What a beautiful Bridge. I was lucky enough to see a train pass over on the way to Bendigo just after I had the photo taken. I was in the area Doing a multi cache which as it turns out had been archived back in February. That will teach me for not keeping my database up to date.

Anyway, love the bridge as well as the grounds of Rupertswood. Thanks to Team Ladava for the cache.

It was a pleasant cool night for a walk, so we decided to head out to Sunbury this evening to get this GCA virtual. We had picked up the old GC cache here previously, and remembered the walk around the lake, so we repeated that walk tonight, after parking on Racecourse Road. Yes, a truly awesome piece of stonemasonry. We continued around the lake on the other side of the bridge, and couldn't believe how many ibis were nesting on the islands. (What is the plural of "ibis", anyway?) Many thanks for keeping this location going, it's certainly worth a visit. Cheers!

I know this bridge very well having spent 15 years going over it on the train to work each day. We have also seen it close up while finding 2 caches close by and now as a virtual on GCA. We find it strange that so few geocachers hunt for GCA caches which is such a shame but it has lead us to reach a milestone on this cache, that is to be the first Victorian team to claim 100 GCA finds.

Thanks to all the people who have placed caches on GCA for us to find we have really enjoyed them and thanks to Team Ladava for a reason to revisit the grand old bridge.

Cheers Keith & Jill

Not many lovers of GCA caches I see, but nevertheless out today for some caching I thought I'd stop past this location where I'd been before to grab a happy snap before heading off to some moe caching.
Took nothing, left nothing.
