Description

Find and photograph the initials and date of Tasmania's earliest known graffiti carved in stone

This virtual cache is almost an exact replica of an earlier cache that has been archived and therefore thanks goes to The Animal Cachers for their original.

Park at S41 15.478, E 146 56.725.  GPS Accuracy is often reduced due to surrounds.

The walk in is easy, but the final few metres to the GZ can be difficult. The cache may be impossible to find during winter or after a big storm.

Please include a photo with your GPSr and the initals with your log to claim

Nice sunny day and not too much water so was able to get this one today. TFTC

17-Jul-19
water was too high to access today

I guess I am just lucky that when I went to find this cache that the river was nice and calm and the tide low, so I hopped across and was pretty much standing on what I was looking for before I realised it.

Had found this before taking up geocaching.
Tried to re-find after taking up geocaching but the water level was too high.
Finally found a time to visit with the water nice and low.
Nice little cafe has opened nearby at Paper Beach if you feel like a snack before/after caching here.

29-Dec-16
More like a did not attempt as water level too high. Will have to return

This is not a DNF more like a didn't try. After the severe rain storms and flooding it was a very dangerous no go. zone. AS the track to a nearby cache was also flooded we will be back.

01-Mar-16
Been here several times but never knew about the graffiti until I looked at this virtual cache. Plenty of history around the area.
Definitely not one for high tides or floods though.

Not so much a DNF as a DNAttempt. The more prudent ("I don't want to die alone") side of Mr Tardis deemed GZ to be a no go zone today when faced with the witches cauldron washing machine beneath his feet. Getting the GPS within 12m (OK, arm outstretched) just didn't cut it for this one. I guess "we'll be back" in dryer times.

My kind of graffiti, historically significant and doesn’t involve spray cans..
found on a return visit, definitely one for when the river is not in flood ..!!

Hi madchilli
Drove here from Devonport hoping to get one at the Rubicon River but was unable find that one. A Couple of others to get in Launceston too, before returning South.
Enjoyed getting out to this one - my shoes were pretty slippery or was that the rocks. Had an unintended entry once or..... NOT SAYING!!
But had to change my clothes back at the car - no, not total ducking luckily. Water's a bit chilly.
Thanks for the challenge and the fun.
Worst part about it all, Anne was watching!!!!
Love the history associated with this cache and the great walk associated with it.
TFTC and cheers
OldSaint.

Had a tentative but unsuccessful look during the winter months when the water was much higher. Today the water was much lower and a quick hop, skip and jump and there it was. Thanks madchill. Photo to follow

This is a really great area to visit. Can imagine how the first explorers up this small river must have felt. Thanks heaps for the opportunity of being here today.

Was out this way 'frogging' so decided to grab this one as well! Have been meaning to come here for a while now, TFTC

31-Dec-11
Haven't been anywhere near here before and since we were up here "frogging" decided to stop and grab this one as we were so close. Wouls love to know what the fish were that we were following (or were they following us?) up the river. I will put a photo in the gallery and if anyone knows what they are drop me a line and I will be forever grateful

31-Dec-11
I have been here before but as this is a different listing site I'll log it again.
Visited here today with Tim Tam and there were lots of small fish that seemed to be following us up the river.
Found the graffiti and photographed then checked out all the fish congregating near the falls.
And then off to the nearby Supply River Mill cache.
Thanks for the walk again.

While my wife attended a conference in Launceston I was allowed to go caching for two days in and around the Launceston Area. In the end I managed to go through to Derby and get the icem cache I wanted to find, through to Kayena and check my caches there and clear out the majority of Launceston Traditionals that were actually there. The only one that I failed to get was "Power to the People", where I simply ran out of time.

What a great piece of history. Photo taken, and I would have had a swim, except a) it was cold and b) I was drenched earlier in the day and therefore my change was already used and c) it was to long a walk back wet.....

Ah ha we found it - a slippery little sucker it was too. Mr T was unaminously elected by me (ha ha) to rock hop to GZ. A great spot and enjoyable walk in Clapping TFTC

28-Aug-10
Was planning to do this today while here for the nearby cache, but forgot to bring the scuba gear. After all the rain we've been having it was out of the question today. Will come back in the summer.

01-Jun-10
Found this one easily once i made my way across to it. It would help to ensure you have shoes on with some good grip on them. I had old ones on which made my steps cautios ones!!

Fun cache to do. Will get Photo uploaded shortly (when Mrs GabMil shows me how to get it off my phone and on to here!!).

TFTC.

Lovely area here, had fun getting to this cache. I felt like a kid again, as this was what I loved to do when I was much younger.

On the road to 300…
4th cache on the list today, another great spot well worth a re-visit. Well I might be onto something Neribil.. Only a few mts from the AH carving I found another carving. It’s the name ’J Thomson’ this may well be the culprit that did both these carvings?? I will leave it to you to find his or her whereabouts, excavate the body and give it a flogging!!
TFTC TNLN SL

The carving is fascinating - there was considerable effort expended to carve these initials and date in the hard rock. Photo will be posted within the hour. The amazing find was the large number of juvenile flathead sunning themselves at the base of the falls - easily a couple of hundred enjoying the warm afternoon sun on a rising tide.

13-Feb-10
Gone to do this several times before the old cache was archived. Thanks for resurrecting it Chilli.

11-Feb-10
Viola I found hAH-HA
A slippery little sucker near GZ but still gettable.
Loads of toadfish in the river near GZ and as I walked out there were schools of mackerel or mullet (or something or other) swimming their way up.
Thanks for the cache madchilli

An interesting spot with a lot of history. The bloke who did the grafitti should have been made an example of and flogged. It makes you wonder what the next generation will be like?

11-Feb-10
Visited after signing nearby log....this time I knew what I was meant to find...plus it was a lot easier to get to the right spot than last visit. Wonder how long it took to carve??...and 206 yrs ago. Thoroughly enjoyed this one again...another top spot...many thanks madchilli...Cheers.

09-Feb-10
DRAT....never took a photo...but at least I know where it is. Also one of the best caches I've ever done....so well done Madchilli for resurrecting it.

Lets see who thought to take a pic the first time they found it?
