Description
Go with or against the flow and enjoy the Goldfields Track journey as well as the destination
This is a GA 10th anniversary cache and also marks the first of our Goldfields Track Route caches. We hope some of you will visit this cache during a long distance walk, run or ride on the Goldfields Track.
The multi-use Goldfields Track comprises the Great Dividing Trail tracks, this one being Leanganook Bendigo-Castlemaine. Others sections are Dry Diggings Castlemaine-Daylesford and Wallaby Daylesford-Ballarat-Buninyong.
The cache is near the top of the fall of water in the Coliban Channel to a set of dissipators. As the name implies, these structures of rather graceful design, blunt the force of water as it drops to a new level to continue its gravity induced journey to Bendigo. You will see from my photos that in January 2007 there was plenty of water cascading through while today there is none and there hasn't been for a couple of years. There is a good view across country and bush to distant hills.
The approach from the west is short. You have a choice of a short, sharp climb beside the main water drop or a slightly longer, more gradual 4WD track. For an enjoyable much longer walk/ride, approach along the Coliban Channel from North Harcourt Rd. In either direction green Great Dividing Trail markers show the route.
See the Great Dividing Trail Assn or Coliban Cache (GCXGYV) by Hondo222 for an excellent description of the Coliban Main Channel history and features.

And yet was still in a lot of water.. emptied as best I could. one clip wasn't engaged.
btw some water running in Coliban Main Channel but not enough to show off dissipators etc. Coliban Water release into the channel on demand from irrigators and town supply, so presence of water is just theluck of the draw.

It was with a sense of de ja vu that we set off to search for your hide today, as the last time we ventured in here was in August 2006 when we were on a similar mission for a gc.com hide.
Back then there was a small amount of water in the race due to recent rain, but today not a drop!
Thank you kennythe1st for this hide, placed for such a significant geo occasion.
Cheers,
Romax.
Thanks for the FTF pathtag and a very big happy birthday to Oz geocaching - I have taken the day off work to celebrate
