Description
No the quaint little town of Cumnock is not on fire but you can find a type of Blaze Tree at GZ.
Blaze trees were used by surveyors up until 1886.
If they were marking the corner of a parcel of land they had blazes on all four sides.
If they were marking the boundary line they were blazed on both sides at right angles to the boundary.
Reference Trees however were usually marked within 30 m of each corner with a large blaze inscribed with a broad arrowband the portion number.
So this is a reference tree as you can see the broad arrow and the portion number 24
84
clearly marked in the blaze. A section of the newer growth has been removed to preserve the blaze. Quite a great little piece of history which I haven't been able to trace yet. If someone can identify exactly where this parcel of land was I would love to know.
I hope you enjoy this discovery as much as I did.
