Description

We named this cache in Penrose Forest because of the interesting rocks that cap the hill.

These rocks at the top of the hill must have a lot of iron in them becasue we've always had trouble getting our compass to point in the right direction round here! There is plenty of evidence of mining around the hill and on the top you'll see the remains of an old mine shaft - unfenced so please do take care.

Not so long ago the whole area was a uniform forest but Penrose was logged a few years ago and now "Magnetic Hill" is left with a little "topknot" of trees! Another 10 years and it will once more be surrounded by a tall pine forest as the young trees can be seen growing in their rows all around.

Turn off the highway at Kingsbury VC rest area (lovely picnic area and toilets) and drive a short distance to park in Burnt Cottage Rd around S34° 37.300' E150° 12.900'  You can then walk up the dirt road to the top of the hill where you'll see the interesting rock formations. The top level has huge boulders, the next level down large boulders and the level below that small boulders, before the open land begins. The cache is hidden in the area between the "huge" level and "large" level so climb down past the huge ones and start to look around the large ones.

The ground can be rather rough and you would need to keep a close eye on young children. This is NOT a good cache to attempt at night.

It's time to archive this. Still a great spot but not many visitors these days

A day trip in the area and this was my first stop. I got to know the levels very well and I don't think I have been so happy to find an ammo can. There is certainly some interesting geology up here.

I have driven past this area so many times over many many years. This hill has always stood out. The last few years I noticed a cache here but I was always in a rush to get to the snow for a bit of skiing. I was on my way to Canberra for the Mapping exhibition today so I made a special effort to pull off the hwy. So glad I did. The walk up th hill was awesome and once up the top the views were splendid not to mention the beautiful trees both eucalypts and the fragrant pines on the way up. The cache took some hunting to find but eventually I spied it from above, completely uncovered. On opening the log book I discovered it has been many months since this was last found. Yeah first finder for 2014. Thanks for such a great cache and location.

Well then! Would you look at that? This cache hasnt been found over a year, and then two different people find it today! Wow!

Was also in the forest for the exact same reason as Walw, had this loaded on the GPS, but never was up this way, until we were leaving today.

I agree with Wilbert67's comment of this place needs more caches, i even had a premade cache ready to hide (I dont know if i should be proud of the fact that, it was the main reason why i brought my GPS with me, not just for finding...for hiding!) but never got around to it :S

Anyway. Such a lovely spot up here, thanks Strike-a-light for placing one here Smile

Driving around Penrose today after visiting Dragonskin, a major annual event for Venturers (Scouts 15-18) that was being run here this year. Great weather, so a very pleasant hike up the hill to find the cache. It's been a while since this was last found, but all happily intact.
TNLNSL, thanks for the cache!
best wishes,
Wal

Great spot for a cache, I think this whole area could need some more caches?

I saw this pop up on my outward bound trip from Canberra to Sydney but didn't have time to make the short detour, that was fixed on my return trip, but for some reason I didn't have it on my GPS just Tomtom but fortunately there was 3G and I could download the details from the GCA website ..eventually over shot the track up but only by 30m but found it quickly, Great spot indeed I have seen this hill many a time on my journey up to Sydney.

thanks muchly for the cache

Top spot but.

Have driven past on the freeway always saying next time I'll stop. Well today I did. Drove almost all the way, then a short walk to the top and looking towards GZ where I soon spotted a likely hiding place and after clambering down I was proven right. Picked up a few samples for Mini Roo's rock collection. Thanks for the cache strike-a-light

Called in at last as have been past this on a few occasions but always late in the day. Took a little while to find but got there in the end. I took a sample of the stone to test it against my compass & yes it had an affect. A good sized cache & a top location - thanks.

Up the hill we climbed, all I could think was I was caching back in Canberra. Found after a little bit of searching around the rocks TFTC

Kiama 10. Despite a tomtom inspired random drive through the forest, we found the hill no probs. The climb was easy enough, but the rocks on top were very 'hide friendly' Great spot. Thanks.

Stopped off in the drizzly rain and made our way up the hill. Remembered the area as it was the start point for a mountain bike orienteering event a few years ago.

The cache lived up to its name and the GPS wouldn't settle as we go closer to GZ. There certainly are a lot of possible hiding spots around here but it didn't take TLM Junior long to come up with the goods.

Nice view from up here and interesting rocks. The high iron content of the soil and pea gravel stains anything it touches.

Grabbed CITO GC and will put it in a GC cache.

2TF - I had eyed this location off from a distance after they harvested the forest around GZ thinking that the native species here would remain untouched, and would be an ideal location for a cache. Well done strike-a-light even more interesting up here close up! Exchanged swaps and left a CITO geo-coin. Now I am not too sure how to log it into a GA cache, so any tips will be appreciated. Fantastic views from up here as well.

Found on a 10th anniversary run from Canberra. Great spot for a daylight walk and made even better by a FTF. Thanks for the pathtag and certificate. SL TFTC
