Description

The Twelve Apostles were formed by erosion. The harsh and extreme weather conditions from the Southern Ocean gradually erode the soft limestone to form caves in the cliffs, which then become arches that eventually collapse, leaving rock stacks up to 50 m (160 ft) high. The stacks are susceptible to further erosion from waves. In July 2005, a 50-metre-tall (160 ft) stack collapsed, leaving seven standing at the Twelve Apostles viewpoint. Due to wave action eroding the cliffs, existing headlands are expected to become new limestone stacks in the future.

The stacks were originally known as the Pinnacles, and the Sow and Pigs (or Sow and Piglets, with Muttonbird Island being the Sow and the smaller rock stacks being the Piglets), as well as the Twelve Apostles. The formation's name was made official as the Twelve Apostles, despite only ever having had eight stacks.

To log this virtual take a photo of yourself or your team name at the given coordinates with the Twelve Apostles in the background.

Congratulations to Shifter Brains on FTF.

Second visit to this spot...I'm not entirely sure, but I don't think geocaching was a thing when I came here...first marriage honeymoon.

#GA5847 - 1:46:00 PM; Day twelve (pure coincidence!) of a road trip taking the long way to Adelaide from the National Capital and back again with the geohoney. After spending the night in Port Campbell, we backtracked to the Bay of Islands to start our earthcache led start to our Great Ocean Road tour today. Stopped off at the 12 Apostles and grabbed a few snaps between muggles while we were there. TFTC The_Tritonz Very HappyClan Cerberus

Our third visit to the Apostles and they are still an impressive sight. But so many tourists that it's hard to get near the rail to get a photo.
We were lucky with the weather too. A break in the rain was appreciated for the time we were here.
And two for the price of one here as we grabbed the earthcache at the same time. Even going to use the same photo.
Thanks The Tritonz.

1234!!!

My last GCA cache as I have grown disillusioned with the direction the caches have taken.

I decided to make it a worthy one.

Thanks for the memories.

Stayed overnight at Port Campbell and spent the day checking out the coastline. It had been many years since we were here last and it was great to be back, visited the 12 apostles and grabbed the necessary snap.

Thanks THE_TRITONZ for setting up this virtual.

This is a photo with a guest member of our team. The photo was taken on the way to one of the mega events. Miss Shifter made this 'pumpkin' and it travelled with us for the trip.
Thanks The_Tritonz
