Description

Broken Tree

A series of geocaches that, when viewed on the Geocaching Australia map, outline the Commonwealth Star.

This geocache is a micro geocache, but that should not perturb you as that only describes the container that holds the log. The geocache itself is about 200ml in size and when you see if you will know how nearly all of the remaining geocaches in the series are hidden. The series is set around Altona Coastal Park and it should only take an hour or so to collect the series. In the warm weather, watch out for snakes and wear a hat and sunscreen as there is no shade in the area. There is a cooling breeze that comes off the bay so be prepared, especially in colder months and take a light jacket with you if the wind is onshore.

The geocaches are all easy geocaches with the fun of this series intended to mark off the Commonwealth Star.

Altona Coastal Park is a 70 hectares intertidal and salt marsh area located 11 km from Melbourne CBD in the western suburb of Altona, is an important recreational and nature conservation area, providing habitats for a large biodiversity of flora and fauna. It is part of the Cheetham and Altona Important Bird Area and has a large open space consisting of coastal saltmarsh communities as well as important mangrove habitat and mudflats that sustain resident and migratory shorebirds. There is also a large fenced area featuring some walking tracks through open woodlands and grasslands. The park is being rehabilitated primarily through weed control and revegetation. This reserve is strictly dog on lead and includes an area where dogs are not authorised, which is clearly signed. There are no facilities at this reserve. Access into the reserve is via Altona/Racecourse Road with parking either at the ford carpark or adjacent to the Pines Scout camp.

The Commonwealth Star (also known as the Federation Star, the Seven Point Star, or the Star of Federation) is a seven-pointed star symbolising the Federation of Australia which came into force on 1 January 1901. Six points of the Star represent the six original states of the Commonwealth of Australia, while the seventh point represents the territories and any other future states of Australia. The original star had only six points; however, the proclamation in 1905 of the Territory of Papua led to the addition of the seventh point in 1909 to represent it and future territories. The Commonwealth Star is one of the distinguishing characteristics of the Australian flag.

One of the caches we found whilst exploring the area. Although the co ordinates were accurate these hides took some time to find, as they were well covered by nature.
Many thanks caughtatwork for creating this geoart and giving us the opportunity to grab some smilies.

A night time wander through the reserve.
I have been to this area quite a few times, even managed a first to find on one of Rob, caches nearby one night.
Nearly every one of my visits has been a nocturnal wander. Perhaps I'll add a night cache to the reserve soon.
Tonight the moon was just past full, perfect for wandering without the aid of torchlight (for the most part).
Only one solitary cyclist passed through in the two and a half hours that I was here.
Fortunately I found them all. That was my plan, to complete the GeoArt in one go.

Thanks for the GeoArt caughtatwork.

Accurate coordinates and the hint led to a quick find. The cache and contents were in good condition. Thanks caughtatwork for the cache and the series.

#GA5118 - 17:00; In Melbourne for a couple of days and between errands, there is time for a spot of caching. I collected "the magic box" for the Victorian Reverse Geocache (GA6859) from its CO and then set off on my mission. Collected some caches along the way, then did a bit of work for the geodaughter before getting back to the mission. I originally had company when the trip was planned and this new series was on the agenda. That all changed after the recent COVID cases and I was travelling solo, so decided to clear some of the caches I hadn't found, but my usual caching companion had. Decided to make my way back to the city via this cache and collect my first "GeoArt" find anyway seeing I was so close after completing the reverse cache at Truganina Park. This one was a quick find and only a short stroll from the carpark to add this new cache type to my found list. TFTC caughtatwork Very HappyClan Cerberus

###FTF###

I'd noticed these come online.

Been waiting for some spare time for a walk in the park.

Spent a couple of hours here today clearing the area.

I had so many choices for this one.

Just could not find it.

The most likely was bare.

The I looked around.

Hey what is that?

Looks like someone had cache creeped it out to the middle of no where.

So back it went after signing.
