Description

In 1850 Queen Victoria announced the formation of a new colony, which was to be named after herself of course, with separation occurring from New South Wales on 1 July 1851.

It was the start of the interstate rivalry between Victoria and New South WalesTo out do their northern cousins, the new colony set about constructing a new and impressive parliament building. Construction began in 1856, and the work is yet to be completed. Within 10 months of the work commencing, progress was so quick, that both houses were able to sit for the first time on the 21 November 1956.

In 1880 work on the west wing commenced, and a decision was made to source the stone from New South Wales as opposed to the Heatherlie Quarry in Stawell, which was the main supplier of stone for Melbourne at the time. The main reason given was due to the expense of transportation of the stone to Melbourne, which was by bullock dray.

A fiery debate broke out. The Honourable John Woods MP, the local member for Stawell, to express his indignation at the choice of NSW stone, arranged for a 4 metre high pillar of stone from Stawell, to be placed outside the Royal Exhibition Building, to prove its durable quality, by claiming it would outlast the building.

In 1882 the Government subsidised the construction of a tramway from Stawell, which helped reduce the cost of transport, and in 1885 a royal commission made the decision to use the Stawell stone.

The post co-ordinates will take you to the site of the Stawell stone pillar, adjacent to the Royal Exhibition Building, which was also the site of Australia's first parliament. You will note that both are still standing, so the Wood's demonstration in essence is yet to be concluded.

Logging the Cache

To log this cache you need to take a photo of at least your GPSr (if possible other members of the team) with the pillar in the background, and attach to your log. Any logs without photos will be deleted.

Thanks for sharing this interesting location. An amazing part of history.
Dropping someone at an appointment nearby so I took a stroll whilst I waited, seeing the sights, the amazing colours, the natural beauty and the architecture. The geocaches are a great bonus of my day out. Dancing
It’s amazing to see the area through the eyes of a Geocacher.
Thank you for this cache GhostGums. Clapping Interesting seeing that I am a Stawell boy.

Having a walk around Melbourne filling in time before my flight home I had this on my to do list. Thank you for bringing this item of history to my attention. Very Happy

#GA5090 - 12:45; This cache has always seemed to be on the periphery when I'm in Melbourne and I never quite made it here. On a circumnavigation of the CBD today I finally made it here to learn a little bit of local history. Nice to see the competition between our states continues to this day. I have been here for three graduation ceremonies and not ever got the required photo of the monument. I have even sat down here on occasions. I was surprised to see I hadn’t logged it before so as I was passing today I took the obligatory photo. Why is it just a block, surely someone could have carved a more interesting shape. TFTC

I traveled back home to SA from Perth for family reasons and decided that Melbourne is only a short hop from Adelaide, so I logged an attendance at the Parkville Mega event and headed over for 5 days in Melbourne. I hired an E bike and had it for 4 days so was able to get around to many places and grab lots of caches as well as biking from the Youth Hostel in North Melbourne to Parkeville which was only a short ride. After checking into the hostel on Thursday i jumped on a tram and headed down to the markets and then jumped off and went for a stroll through a park nearby for another cache. On the tuesday after the event I rode all around the cbd getting caches and was passing through here to go to some other caches so i stopped by here to have a look and and grab some photos so i could log the cache. The things you see when riding a bike....much better than having a car. And what a magnificent building and park. Thanks for the cache Ghost gums

After getting Daddy Long Legs irradiated at nearby St V's, we decided to take a walk around the local area finding caches before we had to return to have the scans done. This was our very first stop and upon reading the plaque and description, we had a good giggle. What a legend. A photo was taken (Daddy Long Legs isn't glowing just yet, still waiting for the radiation to permeate) and we were off for more. TFTC GhostGums. Loved this one and wouldn't have known about it without the cache. I've been here sitting exams on many occasions and it's nice to associate one of my favourite buildings with a positive and fun thing to do.

Came here because of the GC cache but noticed that this virtual popped up too. It was busy here due to the tattoo convention but both GC and GCA virtual caches were found.

On a sub-holiday as part of our trip to Castlemaine , we are staying in a house only a few hundred metres away on Nicholson St. I just missed the nearby computer cache at the museum by a couple of minutes, but realised this one was close , so scooted over, tooksome pics , then met the rest of the family to go "home". I was bearled muggled by another person reading the plaque , but we silently agreed only history nerds, geologists and geocachers were interested in this chunk of rock.
Photo is off my phone. Better quality pics later.

I didn't know about this cache when I placed my physical GC cache here years ago, but recently I have been finding more and more GCA caches and noticed it was here. I was visiting to replace my cache and thought it was a perfect opertunity to make this find at the same time. It also provided me with a hoot cover story for being here. The photo has no GPS, as my phone was serving as my GPS that day. You can also see it was pretty bright
Thanks for the cache ghost gums

From my hotel in nearby Carlton this was within range for a walk before heading back to find some dinner. Well it does stick out. Unfortunately the iPhone is both my camera and GPS so it's a bit hard to include my GPS in the photo. Technology hey? Anyway here I am in front of it, taken from an angle that didn't have the sun glare behind me. Thanks GhostGums.

The only GCA cache I managed to get in Victoria, I had Gps problems, coordinate problems and simply ran out of time.
We did a GC cache nearby and I remembered to get this one!

The geofamily decided to spend the day at Melbourne Museum. The geokids love Kids Gallery and the Dinosaur Walk there. Once done, we decided to find some nearby caches. This turned out to be an interesting place to log some finds. We started off with an opencaching.com cache at the museum, followed by a traditional GC cache and finished it off with our first GCA find.

The attached photo are the two geokids posing in front of the cache. My Android phone is my camera as well as GPSr. I've used a program called 3D Compass+ (suggested in the GCA forums) to capture the photo as it shows the time and GPS location overlayed on the photo.

Between nights out celebrating birthdays and the Tour de France, the whole family has had a lazy weekend... I needed to get out of the house for a walk, so a trip to the city seemed like a good idea.

With a strong sense of deja vu, I arrived here in the dark after picking up a couple of new caches on either side of the Museum. An informative virtual. Thanks for filling us in on this chunk (or is it a pair of chunks) of history, GhostGums.

After the Lego convention I dragged my 2 smallest helpers across to grab the GC cache and get this virtual as well. Thanks GhostGums for the history and the cache.

I took the day off to come into the Museum with the family to see the Birds of Paradise exhibition. Just before we headed home I remembered that there was something else I wanted to see Smile and convinced the family to make the short stroll over to this location. Once here I was able to do this GCA cache, a GC Trad. and a virtual Munzee all while standing on the one spot in the gorgeous sunshine Big Grin.
As always the use of kids and a stroller makes very public finds and rehides easy.

I have been to the quarry (pre caching ) in the Grampians where this stone came from. It always brings back memories of the Wedged-tailed Eagle that flew up from a kill on the side of the dusty gravel road and along just in front of the car we neared the turnoff.

Cheers GhostGums, thanks for the history lesson.

I wasn't too indignant this morning, even given the weather conditions, so I dropped by here to take the pickie at 09:00 Wink.

Took pickie. Thanks for the info and the cache GhostGums.

I had an hour before a meeting up this end of town so plenty of time for a virtual, a physical and to hide a couple of moveables. You'd think. Stabby

Lots of people wandering around around checking out the area for a function I think, either that or they were caching in the wrong places with the detailed inspection they were doing. Anyway - eventually they went around the other side and I managed to complete all 3 tasks. TFTC

First day back at work and two meetings in town...great.

Ah well, I ahve a little time, maybe some caching can dull the pain. Besides, I haven't tried out the new Dakota 20 in the city. So, out of the car-park, fire up the GPS and what do you know ? I never realised there was GCA cache near here, because I had no means of loading both GC and GCA GPX files till now. Loving the Dakota !!

I'd done the GC cache here a while ago, so knew the story, but now I have another notch in the belt. Thanks for the cache GhostGums.

Thanks for bringing me here.

I was in the area for a work meeting and had examined the GC maps planning to pick up a VERY nearby GC traditional - but on approaching it my GPSr gave me the info for this GCA virtual instead! How's that for prioritising! So, I obeyed its preferences and snapped the photo before grabbing the other cache...

Nothing like time-saving Very Happy

We an vertainly appreciate the indignation of the Right Honourable gentleman when "foreign" stone was used in preference to local stone. Thanks for bringing us to this monument and extending our knowledge of Victorian history.

23-Jul-11
We had to meet up with friends close by so stopped off here on the way through. Great piece of history and with the photo taken it was off for a warming latte nearby.

Thanks for the virtual

The geoson and I had a few moments today to try and grab a few caches in inner Melbourne and this one came up on our radar. We parked just north east of the cache and jumped out of the car in a flurry. Running over to the GZ location we spotted the column, had a read and then when all the muggles had past I sent geoson to stand next to it with GPS. He has never done a cache like this. We loved it. We also collected the GC under the slab while we were at it! Two for the price of one. A big high five and we ran back to the car to make a quick get away before we picked up a ticket for not paying the parking fee. Thanks for the experience. It was fun.

Out and about with the essendon bushwalking club on our city parks and gardens walk.

Thanks for the cache and the nice day out.

249. The good thing about caches like this is that later on, say while your driving past after picking up the non-Melbourneite missus from her shopping expedition, you can seem really knowledgeable while pointing out interesting historical tidbits you've "picked up along the way". Silenced

A quick find and picture at this location after picking up the daughters party leftovers (19th birthday in the gardens). An interesting piece of history that would totally pass by everyone around.
Took nothing, left nothing.
Thanks GhostGums for this nice GCA virtual cache for me to find today.

We were staying nearby after attending a wedding the day before.
This was the only cache we had a chance to grab before we had to head home.
A nice memorial and story.
We have an EarthCache at Heatherlie Quarry where this stone was quarried.

I was on "dad's taxi" duty tonight, driving near this one, so dropped by to claim the find. A few people walking around the park at dusk, quite cool tonight. I didn't know this was here, so thank you for showing me this piece of history. Cheers!

Dropped in today, on a quick city caching visit. I've never noticed this monument before - I enjoyed the story behind it. TFTC (Photo taken with the GPS's inbuilt camera - hence not in the picture)

Find number 1 of 17 today. Took the required pics as some tourists took another look at the sculpture. They were going to walk right on past but saw someone taking pics of it and thought it might be worth taking a second look.

After an afternoon out caching in the Organ Pipes national park, the bf and I came into the city to grab a bite to eat for dinner. This was the closest unfound cache to our parked car.

We walked over to where the piller stands and noticed all the shiny cars.. The Motorclassica was hosting a show and now they were packing up and driving all the cars out onto trucks.

We saw some beautiful cars which I'll include in my log soon.

23-Oct-10
Out caching for a few hours on a wet Saturday morning. I've spent a fair bit of time around here over the years, but I haven't taken any notice of this until now. I wonder if it will outlast the building?

Interesting spot - Thanks GhostGums
