Description

A 10th anniversary multi-cache which also commemorates a famous Australian.

At the listed coordinates you will find the grave of a famous Australian, probably not as well known nowadays but a pioneer of his time. He is described as five things: soldier, ..., countryman, writer and a co-founder of an Australian icon.  Of course the cache is not here but you need to do the following to find the final cache location.

To the given S coordinates you must add the square root of the last digit of the year he died.

To the given E coordinates you must subtract the day in July his wife died.

These coordinates will lead you to the final cache location which is not in a gravesite.

We hope you learn something about an Australian pioneer buried in a quiet semi-rural cemetery.  In the cache is a sheet with more information.

While you are here have a look to see how many graves have Russian names on them.

On a caching run today with phlphotos, alnic39 and Splitty Miller JJCC and stopped off at this quite cemetery before we headed for the freeway north. After finding the required information we calculated what was needed and made a quick find of the cache. Thanks for bringing us here and for the cache Yurt.

Ha ha - I knew exactly which Hudson from a previous visit. Info was easy to collect and calculations not too onerous. iPhone wanted me a bit further away but I spotted something that needed investigation and had my name in the log book shortly afterwards. TFTC Yurt

#GA1279 - 15:45; Day 2 of a Sydney caching mission with Sol de lune. This stop made for a nice break from trig hunting to relive a bit of history. Gathered the required information and after correcting for a little miscalculation, made our way to GZ where we managed to locate the cache fairly quickly once we were in the right spot. DNF'd this one about 18 months, but in the area again with LuckyL10n and sort about getting a GZ again. Once we had that, and checked again to be sure, we headed up to the calculated area, and after a bit of digging, the cache revealed itself. Was certainly glad with that as I didn't want to leave empty handed again....

Thanks Yurt......a thought it was a great idea for a cache the last time I visited.....and still think the same, but at least this time I'm leaving with a find......great cache all round. Outstanding.

Checked on the cache. All good. Removed some rubbish.

With some intel from phlphotos, I picked up this little beauty before phil and I headed out for a serious day of caching. Such a pity that the icon is hidden below the GC cache icon on the map.

05-Jan-16
Wow! It's still there. I'd been meaning to check on this for ages but with the lack of action with my GCA hides I hadn't managed to get motivated. I was even in the cemetery for the start of the GC cache "Wise Guys" some months ago and forgot to check. Looks like it's still alive.

Came here to get this cache this is the second time I had been here so knew what I was looking for here and got the other information I required to find the cache. It was quiet in the area and walked to GZ and spotted something to check. Then a van was leaving across the road so left in place till the drove away. Uncovered the cache and then the choice was to go back to my car and get gloves, I think they are at home, so have to make do with an extraction tool. Got the cache out and signed the log and replaced. It is always good finding an old unloved cache. Thanks for the cache Yurt. It is also an interesting place to walk around

Well that was a bugger....

When I looked at this one, I wondered who it might be...but certainly didn't pick him. I guess he/they were locals to be buried here...

Anyway, did the maths ok, but look as I did, I couldn't find a regular size cache anyway. Still not all was lost as it was a surprise to see the area in question...and nice to walk to around.

Thanks anyway Yurt...hopefully next time.

It has taken over 2 years to return to this cache, it was muggled the last time I was there with pjmpjm.
Today pjmpjm and I got there and the cache was soon in hand, all is well and dry.
Thanks for the history lesson and nice cache.

Not sure why I have never stopped before and grabbed this one! But anyway pulled up over the road today and quickly found the grave in question. Yes I had heard of the gentleman in question! Quickly solved the maths, which the phone insisted was a bit outside the cemetery. But anyway soon had the well hidden cache in hand. Thanks Yurt.

I forgot to note that I DID check the cache and the headstones the day after I pre-emptively re-enabled it.
All good to go as Baktrak has observed.

06-Jan-12
Checked this while on a frog drop run. Two shiny new graves are in now in place, complete with new headstones, and cache is safe and secure too.

21-Dec-11
I'm going to draw a long bow and assume the headstones are back in place now. Might get a chance to check later in the week.

09-Nov-11
Yesterday's little chat with the grave diggers did result in the needed information from the headstones so a quick visit today had the cache found. All in very good condition. I see Yurt has taken it down it down in the meantime so I hope this is still a "legit" log.

08-Nov-11
Can you believe it? Back for a week and now disabled due to "grave robbing"? Very Happy
Keep checking and let me know when they are back up.

Funny story.. Went to WP1 and there was a guy digging and concreting a grave site. I ask if he's preparing for a new resident and he says "no, just refurbishing two old graves". We chat for a while, about the damage the tree roots are doing to the graves, and I walk off to find "Hudson". A minute or two later and still no sign of Hudson. And then the penny dropped.
"The graves you're refurbishing, aren't by any chance for Hudson #*& and his wife?", I query. "Yes" says he. "And the headstones?" said I. "Back at the works" he replied.
They should return by December.

So glad this cache is back on line. Itching for another cache this evening I noticed that Hudson Who had been re-enabled. Being close to home and even closer to the gym, I snuck out after dinner.

I had found WP1 before but didn't keep the details, so it took a bit of time to relocate the correct gravestone. Some quick calcs ensued and I headed off to GZ for a quick find in the obvious locale".

Thanks Yurt for getting this back on-line.

Signed a brand new log:) TFTC

Cache replaced where it was so clues should still work!

This cache has been temporary disabled for over 90 days, so we will be archiving it to de-clutter the database.

When the cache is ready to be activated again the owner can place a 'published' log and it will go live

20-Mar-11
Disabled due to muggling. Not sure if I'll put it back.

16-Mar-11
Sorry to tell you this but this cache is gone, my personal transportation manager pjmpjm confirmed it, the container is no longer there. That is a shame as I would have liked to find another cache for the day, but it was not to be.
I guess it needs more than just maintenance, it needs a whole new container!

13-Mar-11
We were looking forward to this cache as it is close to home and we have a cache angel who needs to get back to a religous place.

Lots of workman around hindered our search however. GeoBikie chick scared them off for a while, however we came up empty.

There is a lot of leaf litter around which made us cautious.

Will have to go back at a quieter time.

First one found on the Aussie version of Geocaching, went after this catch to get the swaggie and will locate a catch in heart of Sydney to drop swaggie or out west in penrith maybe, Had some trouble finding this one but hey i am new and using a phone gps, sure my maths is right but hey found it anyway, dog next door was barking a bit, think neighbor saw me leave so i waited 10 minutes before putting catch back after signing book in the saftey of the car. Info on Hudson still damp but everything else ok, droped of pen and unused hair bubble.

Interesting cemetery, especially the proliferation of Russian names. Found cache. The (excellent) information sheet on Hudson was very wet. Gave it a bit of an airing but it's still damp. Left swaggie. TFTC!

Wow, how do you find people like this in such interesting locations. When I finally found the correct grave and started to read the head stone, I was gob smacked to see how this person had made his claim to fame. Unbelievable to find such a person in such a tiny little cemetery.
The maths was easy, but when I started to approach GZ I thought I might have made a mistake, but no luckily there was really only one place the cache could be.
Thanks for a really interesting piece of Aussie history. no swaps but this may need a slight bit of maintenance. The cache is dry as is the log book in its double bag, but the history sheet, is really damp and it won't be long before the log book is affected if the bag is not sealed properly. This sheet may need to be replaced with a dry one.
A quick dash across the road to visit Hargraves Nursery.......

Great Cache! Location was really good - almost forgot why I was there when looking at all the headstones. A good challenge for a newbie, (I'm still trying to get my head around GPS'and waypoints etc) so pleased I worked it out Dancing
Unfortunately it doesn't seem to be drying out too quickly .. still damp
Added bonus - I stopped in at Hargreaves on the way and bought a few small plants.
TFTC, Cheers.

Holy Moly, I did not know there was a Cemetery up here. Very interesting. Got to WP1 and wanted to stay, but the dinner call came in so had to hurry Embarassed This place is so overgrown, It's a shame really. To learn Hudson was Co founder of Qantas, OMG, awesome. Well I need to go back to School as my square root sums had my gps trying to get me in the neighbours place. I read the hint and couldn't figure it out. As I went to leave, ahhh, what's this? GZ and Bingo. Cache was slightly exposed and lid was open so water had gotten in. Lucky log is double bagged. SL. TNLN. Tipped water out and dried best I could. Did a waypoint on my gps and was going to PM CO when I got home to advise better co ords. Well when I entered them and checked....Ahhhh Square Root Brick WallBrick Wall now i get it!!! they were spot on after all! TFTC and the history Yurt. Nice one Smile

Thanks for the lesson.

After 319 GC finds -- my very first GCA find! And I hope it's the first of many.

This cache adventure was very interesting indeed, and based in an area I know well. Amazingly, WP1 is located right next to the grave of two old friends of mine (not related to Hudson). I couldn't believe it when I got there. And the eventual GZ is directly adjacent to a building and property rented by my company five years ago.

Cache container is a nice study one and in very good condition. Cache contents were excellent. TNLNSL.

My GPSr kept telling me that I was 10-11 metres off at GZ. However, this reading could be due to the peculiarities of my own little machine or the fault of those damn satellites that always plague us geocachers . . .

Take note of the CO's 'Hints' section if you have questions about the outer limits of your search.

Thanks for yet another great cache, Yurt!

After helping strike-a-light with the calculations back in May, I knew exactly where to park to shelter me from view of all the passing traffic! I always enjoy the historic aspects of this sort of cache and it was great to finally get out to find the cache today (after a morning of helping place a heap of fire tacks for a new night cache up this way)

21-May-10
Love a night cache so had a go on dark again, nice dark night, cold, windy, great fun, going to check the plots on Saturday looks tops. TFTC

I was here this morning and thought the same as strike-a-light, the bulldozer has taken it. I went back to work, late and despondant, with the aim of emailling Yurt to let him know about the demise of his cache.
Lo and behold, it was still active with new clues.
A quick bit of planning and a quiet afternoon meant I was able to "sneak" away early in the hope that no-one had beaten me. After a trip that took forever, I parked the car and walked without running to the new location. Had I been beaten?
With trembling hands I opened the log book to find.....nothing.

Woo Hoo...!! I was the first to find Yurt's cache.
A great history lesson Yurt, how did you find this place. I'm impressed. It was worth the long drive(s) just to be here.

The good news is that the cache has not been lost. The original plan was to place it along this treeline but when we went there it was all gone! So we found another spot. The problem is that the instructions for the calculation were wrong. I have changed it but note that you must subtract rather than add the easting.

21-May-10
Some major clearing in the cemetery seems to have scooped up the cache as well unfortunately. Great location though, I hope you can restore it here still.

Happy 10th anniversary!
