Description

This is one of 10 geocaches placed in this area in honour of the 10th anniversary of the first geocache to be placed in Australia.

The GCAX series was published 18 May 2010 in honour of the first geocache to be placed in Australia, Lane Cove.  The series is made up of 9 traditional caches and one puzzle.  The puzzle is neither clever nor difficult; it's main purpose in life is to get you out and walking around the area - which is one of the things we all love about geocaching anyway.  Each traditional cache has a letter and corresponding number inside the lid.  As the cache descriptions do no t say which letter can be found in which cache, you won't know if you need to visit all or just some of the caches in the series to find the puzzle cache.  But hey - you wanted to do all of them anyway, didn't you?  ;-)  The caches are all easily accessible and within Knocklofty Reserve.

GCAX01: Quarried is located near one of the quarries that provided stone for the construction of Hobart.  It also has great views of Mt Wellington.  Please note that the cache can be found on the public side of the fence; there is no need to go to the quarry face.

These caches were a surprise, as we came up here to log a group of gc caches, but spotting these on the Garmin, it was great to find some of these as well. One of your caches was in desperate need of CO attention. I didn't make a note of which one, but I think this was the one. TFTC Snuva.

out and about with the Rafas caching on GF day, This series just wanted to be done. box is looking worst for wear you can only just make out the numbers and letters on the lid if you put it back together, no log book that would be saturated as another caches in the series was, lid was not put back on correctly. nice views over quarry and down to Glenorchy area. TFTC TNBPN needs a mother to look after the series.

The GeoGSP and I headed off for a walk around this reserve this morning after dropping off my son at the Aquatic Centre. It was nice and sunny, fantastic views, and it wasn't too hot yet, so great geocaching weather. This container looking a bit sad, it has a cracked lid, and quite a bit of dirt and debris inside. Had a little clean out, but didn't have a replacement container with me, sorry. Thanks for putting this series of caches up here Snuva.

11/02/2017 18:41 located. Lid cracked, full of water.

Our last GCA cache find of the day and again this one was in plain view so was a quick find, myself Goose and Bear added our names to a makeshift log since there was none in the cache. We covered the cache in rocks before moving on.

Story of our day:-
I had been talking about doing Jurassic Park for a long time now and its come up a couple of times in as many weeks, while we were all out doing the Pipeline on bikes and then again when i was walking back from the event with Goose and Bear. Last weekend Goose started talking about a nice walk in the area of the mountain, first idea was to finish of the pipeline doing the lower ones walking back to Fern Tree. Somehow our plan of an easy walk turned into a monster starting out at Big bend heading for Jurassic Park and exiting the park at Mount Stuart.
After parking the car at Mount Stuart Smiley was good enough to drop us off at Big Bend and we started our walk into the lost world at 10:22, following the Lost World 'Track' to GZ we didn't make bad time getting the first cache of the day at 11:30, We enjoyed some great views that we would have never come across if not for this cache. Next came the fun bit getting out of the Lost World, all was going well until we incorrectly followed cairns that lead North and until one of us looked at the map we considered ourselves on the correct path, a bit of clambering later we were following the path we needed marked by yellow and red paint marks. At 13:00 we got to the parks sign that said 'Lost World 45 minutes one way' while we agreed with the 'very steep difficult track' we disagreed with the timings!
From here we followed the Old Hobartians and Hunter tracks this was a bit of a rest till we started down the Breakneck Track which almost lived up to its name, we were pleased when we crossed the main fire trail and we were back on a less painful path, after this we made good time finding caches at a more respectful rate and before you know it we were into the Knocklofty area for a last few finds before limping down all those nasty steps to where we had parked the car 10 hours earlier its now 20:22 and we are all knackered.

After 'A discussion from the Lectern' event on Australia Day, Stainless Steel Rat, the Bear and I had been discussing the Jurassic Park cache as one we wanted to tackle this summer. This idea grew into a few more caches until we created a walk all the way down to Mt Stuart. Smiley kindly dropped us off at big bend and we started our walk at 10.20am and finished up at around 8.20pm. It was an 18.5km journey, some of it was the toughest terrain I have walked in. Our decent took us via the Lost Word Track, Old Hobartian Track, Hunters Track, Breakneck Track, crossing over Noahs Saddle to Knocklofty Park and onto the Mt Stuart Circuit to Mr Stuart Road.
Another cache with a long break from the last smiley back in 2013. This was totally out in the open and whilst ok and still sporting some swaps there was no log sheet inside. We added a piece of paper (sorry no plastic bag) so there is a log sheet for the moment. Details recorded, now looking forward to coming back for the rest of the series. TFTC

Whist passing today we spotted the original container about 10 metres from the correct location. It has now been returned to the listed coords and a few small items found there put in the cache. There is no log book and we did not have a bit of paper for a temporary one.

When this cache was first visited we either forgot to record the code included or have since lost it. Having decided that perhaps it would be a nice idea to find the final in the series, we revisited today to get the code number. However the cache appears to have gone. There was a small plastic swap on the ground but no sign of the container in the location that we recalled it being and the spot did match the hint.

I finally found myself in a position to tackle these caches. Only did the northern ones but still enjoyed every cache. Thank you Snuva

12-Sep-11
We had a great day exploring this reserve, not being locals we were impressed with the well maintained tracks and the views were spectacular. Met lots of very friendly dogs and their owners enjoying the beautiful spring day. We underestimated how long the series would take us and ended up walking out in the dark. Thanks Snuva for another great cache. Clapping

I lovely day to go for a walk in this reserve.

13-Aug-11
1st of the series. Out and about on a calm winter's day. Have never been in this reserve before. Thanks Snuva for getting us up here. Great view. Took Philosopy of Caching by Hookline, left chuppa chup toy.

21-May-11
Had to take a short wander off the path for this one, but easily located once we did.

05-Mar-11
We thought a spot we were looming at would be the hide and so it was. Took butterfly rubber and left hippopotamus.

Revisited on 27/4/11 with granddaughter Ella and took navy ute and left blue purse

23-Feb-11
Naughty kaatka. Couldn't resist the big hole in the fence so close to the cache and had to go for a look at the quarry from above. Wow, what a view and how high. Only got the last in the series to do now. TFTC

Time to leave the well-made path and strike out into the bush... but there was a well-trodden trail for us to follow. I was astonished to find that it led to a magnificent vista of the mountain; also loved the little old stone bridge just visible down near the quarry. We snuck through the fence for a peek (well, there was a huge gaping hole in it, don't blame us!) but the edge of the cliff looked hell dodgy so I slunk back to safety and was glad of the fence.

Great cache; the view from here was the best we found anywhere in the reserve, including the summit. Well away from the muggles, too. Loved it. Thanks!

Nice easy find. Is a long way down to bottom of quarry!

29-Dec-10
Found with ease after I'm glad it wasn't on the other side of the fence.

If only we had a rope......oh to throw myself off the quarry face while we were here.

22-Oct-10
Found this cache after doing Sonic's Lookout MUGGLES cache.
I was naughty and stepped through and had a good look over the edge and so wished that this are wasn't fenced as I would love to throw a rope over.....
Cache found quickly and logged. Very windy here today as there looks like a storm brewing....
TNLN. Thanks for the cache Snuva!!!

25-Jul-10
First in the series of 10. Now we'll have to find all the others.

23-Jul-10
A quick find whilst walking in a great area. TFTC

Very windy up on the hill today as big front moves through. Found the cache and all is well. Tree was not as burnt as we thought from one side, but from the other it was. Depends where you are coming from I suppose!!!!

What better way to start this series than with number 1 (although the order soon gets upset !)
Easy find with spot on coordinates - thanks for the cache, Snuva ! Big Grin

Absolutely perfect winters day, and this cache provided a spectacular backdrop. Kinda went off the beaten track for this one, only to discover the proper path when near GZ. Sat and admired the stunning view for a while - can only imagine how great it must have looked with snow on the mountain. TNLNSL and headed back in to the reserve on the real track to look for more in the series! TFTC.

I loved this cache the most as I didn't even know this quarry was here! I think I've seen it from afar (from a different direction) and wondered where exactly it was. It's huge! We were glad of the fence as it looks like a big drop. I couldn't see the mountain for the snowy rain. Liked the hide for the cache. Very inconspicuous! Thanks again Snuva.

10-Jun-10
Beautiful views across to a snow-clad mountain.
#5 in the series.
Thanks!

Our 4th cache of the series. Found at 1157. TFTC

Got this hide at 1106hrs. Memories flooded back as I remembered searching this area looking for "Lookout Muggles." Did you get near here in your search for that cache? OldSaint.

23-May-10
Hmm, wonder if we have picked the most creative way to complete this series??? Decided to visit this cache whilst we were on this side of the reserve. Wanted to climb the fence to look over the edge, but restrained ourselves!! It is a lovely sunny afternoon and we are very much enjoying this series, thanks! T wombat L frog bracelet.

My first find of this wonderful series. I've done the Mt Stuart loop before, but it had never occured to me how close it was to the top of the quarry.

I was a bit aprehensive coming up to this one... if it was a particular tricky hide, then this could become a very frustrating morning. As it was, the coords (like all in the series) were spot on, and the hide wasn't any trickier than it needed to be. The sun was out, the forecasted showers were nowhere to be seen, and it was even starting to warm up. The blank log book was a bonus too! The start of a great day's caching...
