Description

This is one of 10 geocaches placed in this area in honour of the 10th anniversary of the first geocache to be placed in Australia.

The GCAX series was published 18 May 2010 in honour of the first geocache to be placed in Australia, Lane Cove.  The series is made up of 9 traditional caches and one puzzle.  The puzzle is neither clever nor difficult; it's main purpose in life is to get you out and walking around the area - which is one of the things we all love about geocaching anyway.  Each traditional cache has a letter and corresponding number inside the lid.  As the cache descriptions do no t say which letter can be found in which cache, you won't know if you need to visit all or just some of the caches in the series to find the puzzle cache.  But hey - you wanted to do all of them anyway, didn't you?  ;-)  The caches are all easily accessible and within Knocklofty Reserve.

This cache is not at the published coordinates.  To find it, you will need to visit enough of the other caches in this series to find the letters corresponding to this clue:

S42° ED.AHG' E147° IF.CAC'

Logs

This one has been on my map for a long time and over the years I have found what is left of the series, my first find was back in February 2016 after we had walked down from Jurassic Park on a big day out, the next was almost 2 years later when i was in the area searching for caches once again, the last 2 visits to the area were this year and I found one with gooseandegg that I had found before but turns out i never got round to logging which is very like me.

Todays visit to the area came about after a chat with goose last night and we decided we had enough information to make a educated guess, well we both had different guesses and it turned out my guess which was as always is the way was the longer walk was in fact the correct one, after stopping at the first option and searching between the boundary waypoints we moved on after about 15 minutes to the other option and again searched between the upper and lower limits of our waypoints, again we didn't come up with anything so I expanded the search and spotted a matching hint item and then the cache from a distance.

Considering the cache has been unfound for so long and was last found by a muggle called Oliver it is in very good condition and everything was dry inside, after adding our names to the logbook I packed it all away and found some camo to hide the cache so it wasn't out in the open as we had found it, meanwhile the goose logged his find online using the app.

It's great to get this question mark off my map as it has been a bit of a thorn in my side for over 5 years now, I searched for all 10 caches just on the off chance the missing ones weren't in fact missing, logs would say I have visited this area 5 times but I would say it's more likely to be 10 to be honest, never wanting to write a DNF as I would come back again and search some more, Thanks for a great series of caches Snuva they have provided many hours of entertainment.

oh my! how many years has it been. A bit of educated guess work with SSR after finding the ones that are still in play.
Cache is still in good condition.
Some of the series is missing but an educated guess will give you the final coords however I'll help out futere finders: G=1 C=6, you can still find the rest out there

It is a long time between finding the first in the series and this final one; 3 1/2 years in fact. On finding the first few we did not write the code on the container down nor realise the reason it was there. Subsequently we had to go back last year to find the missing codes, but was unable to find one of the caches. This left one unknown number with what seemed like three possibilities. By looking at the map and the cache description we were able to pick one as the most likely. This proved to be correct and the container was easily found and in very good condition, especially given that it had been lying there unfound by anyone since September 2011.

The cache in question GCAX04: Painted on the Spot has been archived, but if you want the missing number it is 6.

My GPS started playing up after I had solved the puzzle and tried to find this one. I got into the general area and spent some time looking in all the wrong places before I spied a suspicious little pile or rocks. From then it was easy!

We had a great day exploring this reserve, not being locals we were impressed with the well maintained tracks and the views were spectacular. Met lots of very friendly dogs and their owners enjoying the beautiful spring day. We underestimated how long the series would take us and ended up walking out in the dark. Thanks Snuva for another great cache. Clapping

Thanks Snuva for a great series in a fantastic area so close to the city. Clapping

You would think that I would have learnt by now.....most of the time lunch with Swampy = caching but this one wasn't so bad as we FINALLY got to finish off the series. Thanks for the walk through the area. TNLN

After having lunch with Tim Tam away from work, we decided to work lunch off by going for a walk. What better way than to finish off this series using my iPhone for directions.
Well, once again, we took off and just followed the arrow. Came across some landcare people (?) working near another cache we have previously found, so we walked to the east for a while before resorting to following the arrow again.
Arrived at GZ and the cache was found quickly because we spotted it from an angle.
Took time to catch our breath, left with a sense of achievement.
Thanks for the series Snuva - a well thought out use of the area.

Great series of caches in a lovely area as well. Enjoyed finding all the others over a couple of visits to the area and finished the series today. TFTC.

Found the other 9 caches 2 months ago but the information didn't add up, and I didn't have time to check where I went wrong. Today I went around the caches again and checked the numbers. The third cache I checked had a clear lid with the information on it from the out side it read the same as what I had but when I took the lid off and read it from the inside I realised where I had made the mistake. Hopping that was the only one I got wrong off I went in search of the prize and without to much searching I had it in hand.
Thanks for the cache and another walk around the hill.

Sometime ago we completed the required caches in the northern part of the park. Today we walked the southern part of the park and collected the remaining required information. We were pleased to make a relatively quick find of the final cache in the series. Thanks for the series of caches which has given us a better appreciation of the features of Knocklofty Reserve.

One final bike ride from town, up Forest Road, all the way to the top (so I would feel I'd earned it), then to the cache itself, which took me an embarassingly long time to find!
Thanks for a great series, and the incentive to flog myself up the hill a few times!

This was indeed, a fun and enjoyable series along easily negotiated tracks. Certainly a great addition to the Knocklofty (and Hobart) geocaches, and a series that everybody would enjoy I suspect.
I am so glad that the final was placed where it was (I AM a little twisted, I admit). Big GrinBig Grin
Well done to Snuva, and let us not forget, Happy 10th Anniversary to GCA ! Big Grin

P.S. I hope we don't have to wait another 10 years to get more of these, Snuva ! Big Grin

This was a top series. I just loved it. And judging by Maddies wagging tail, smiling face (yes, dogs CAN smile) and excited gait, she did too! Excellent caches in their own right with good sized containers, good hides, excellent coordinates, nice walking, I could do it all again! This is my kind of caching!!! And to top it all off, this series made me a PB today for most caches found in one day! IMPRESSIVE!!! (And all in about 3 hours or a bit less). Thanks so much Snuva!

Yes, we finally made it ehre, after dallying too long last weekend and not managing to complete the series then. Interestingly, we had more muggle troubles at this cache than any of the others - must have been the day for outings on the XXXX track! We really enjoyed wandering around the Knocklofty tracks - we always say we should spend more time in the area, so thanks for making us tarry here, Snuva - and thanks for your trouble in putting out a most enjoyable series. T baby sunscreen (although we didn't really need it today!) L frog bracelet (ok, that was a little unoriginal!!)

Our 10th (and final) cache of the series. Found at 1340.
We thoroughly enjoyed this series. It was a perfect Autumn day for caching on Knocklofty. We enjoyed the walk and the spectacular views. The scenery from the final GZ was spectacular and the 20 minute stroll back down to the car park was a great warm-down after all the climbing. Thanks Snuva for a great series. We appreciate all the time and effort you have put into setting this up.

Cheers Snuva - Arrived and logged this cache at 1308hrs as my 9th today and my 510th overall. The series is a great idea as those wishing to find a cache or two can do so without having to go all the way before getting to log one. Had fun; but have never seen so many mugglers and muttlies on Lofty as I did today. Some caches took longer to complete due to this, but I wanted a leisurely walk anyway. From here its on to complete the series with "Up Close and Personal". TFTC, the series and enjoyable walk. Cheers OldSaint.

What a tidy end to a fantastic series. The entire series was a great use of a wonderful location. It was so refreshing to have a day of caching where all the containers were of a decent size, and all with excellent coordinates.

Tricky hides certainly have their place, but my favourite hides are ones like these, where the challenge and reward is in getting there, not in being able to second guess the hider. (Mind you, if I was any good at finding tricky hides, I'd think differently.)

If the timing hadn't worked out for me to find this series on my day off, then it would've been a great one to do with a group of family and friends. With some planning (and a decent map or two), the entire series can be completed without ever being too far from a well formed track. The caches are all hidden in obvious enough places that kids could find them, and they are well stocked with plenty of swaps.

The route I chose wasn't ideal, but it worked well enough and allowed me to pick up a couple of other Knocklofty caches along the way. All up, it took me 2 hours 45 minutes, with a moving time of about 1.5 hours.

Thanks for the great series!
