Description

Our second moveable GCA cache - part of our contribution to the 10th anniversary celebrations of Australian geocaching.

Our first GCA cache was named Drifter and it was an entry in a geocaching race. It was doing quite well really, then partly due to its small size and partly due to its magnetic personality it met a premature demise. As this wasn't very long ago and it is still fresh in our minds we decided to named this cache Drifter Too!

We have released Drifter Too in Albany, WA and we look forward to following its travels around Australia (but please don't take it to Hawker shops, Weetangera ACT or AusTrackers will have nightmares).

The cache is a regular sistema containing the usual bits and pieces. There is a prize and a certificate for the FTF and a certificate for 2TF. There are finders' cards for anyone who wishes to take one.

Oh, and Happy 10th Anniversary.

This was the Wiseman Clan's first ever attempt at locating a GC.
I sold the idea of GC'ing to my xBox generation boys (3 boys, all under 12) by calling it a modern-day treasure hunt!
The kids and I grabbed our kit and hit the tracks guided by our trusty Garmin 62s.
After a short drive we parked and hit the trail with my youngest (4yo) on my shoulders.
Following a wee stroll into the sticks, we found the Cache without much difficulty, and to the enormous delight of the kids!
We paused for a photo and signed the log-book.
We borrowed a little plastic pig from the cache, and left an Oxley Nursing Service pen as collateral.
My kids are now GCing fans, and I am ecstatic that the boys have found an outdoor activity we can all enjoy. THANK YOU ALL!

I finally remembered to take this cache with me when I was going to a spot where it could be placed. Sorry for the delay. I am not an organized person.

A lovely bit of Karawatha Forest. The cicadas were singing today.

About 60m from the trail.

I was looking for something to find and this appeared on the GPS. I have been here before to find and place frogs and found Charcoal Frog sitting beside Drifter. I grabbed them both although I have had Charcoal before.

Off to somewhere new.

Expecting this was going to be some mint tin with a magnet, I had looked at this cache listing for a while but bypassed it thinking I just wouldn't have enough time to search for it. However when at Belmont Bunnings and with fine hot weather, I decided Bubba Bear and I would swing past and have a look. Thanks to the previous hider for some a explicit hint, I was able to locate GZ quickly. And I was very pleased to find a good sized moveable cache. Very Happy Next stop for this cache is Brisbane! Took the pathtag and left a golf ball.

I've been eagerly waiting for an opportunity to pick up this moveable cache, and finally there it was: I happened to be in Perth for the weekend, and Drifter Too was only about 15 minutes away from where I was staying. I got at GZ shortly before 9am, only to see a `drifter' looking man near the area, walking his dog. In his hand was a newspaper, and what looked at a distance to be something wrapped in black plastic - very much like the packaging I remember this cache being wrapped in when I saw it last. If it was a fellow geocacher who just beat me to the find by a matter of minutes, then congratulations sir! If it was a local drifter, well then I hope that the cache hasn't gotten into the wrong hands and gone walkabout. I did spend another 15-20 minutes combing the area, because I couldn't at all be sure that the gentleman I'd seen did have the cache, but he sure seemed to be right in the area where it was hidden. GZ for me was a grove of trees in a Belmont park, and there didn't seem to be many possible hiding places aside perhaps from the nooks of the trees, in which case the cache should have been easy to find (also by a non-geocacher). Fortunately I enjoy photography so I took the time to shoot a few pictures while I was on site. I look forward to seeing other reports about this cache, and I hope it hasn't gone M.I.A., because I sure want to pick it up again some day (not least because I know that another geocacher left a message for me inside it!).

Checked up on this while we were collecting nearby gnomes. Plenty of finder cards left so all we did was drop a pathtag.

The reason this cache wasn't found by FelixII was that the coordinates were 10m from where I found the cache. I persisted with the hint down the line of trees from GZ until I found the cache. I still nearly missed even then as I only just saw a hint of blue when I moved the long grass covering the cache.

Will move on soon.

Brick Wall Oh dear This seems to have been the start of our downfall for today. No luck with this one. Hope it's okay. Our find ratio only went downhill from here today. Better luck next time we hope.

I suddenly remembered I had this cache to drop somewhere, and spotted an ideal hiding place nearby.

We were rather surprised at this location. When we got to the parking area it did not seem that much of an interesting bit of bush, but after following the goat trail and coming to the open area on the granite rocks, we changed our minds. A very nice isolated spot, ideal for a quiet picnic, knowing you are unlikely to be disturbed. Thanks for taking us there, albany getaway

We placed this cache in a nature reserve. To retrieve this cache you should drive up Hunwick NTH Rd, and park at S34 58.784 E117 38.697. There is heaps of room, to park here of the road. This nature reserve has rocks, bush tracks, swamps, wildflowers. To get to the cache you will need to find a goat track and follow it. This will take you past an area that people, in years past used as a bit of a dumping ground for old cars. Why place the cache here? Well the idea is that this is a good place to start a nice drive that not many people do. Once you have retrieved the cache, you should continue to drift to the end of Hunwick Nth rd, when you arrive at the T junction you will turn left into Hunwick rd. Now follow Hunwick rd till you get to the start of the bitumen, (which is the start of Hennings Rd).As soon as you come to the bitumen turn right, this is the continuation of Hunwick Rd. Now continue on Hunwick Rd and enjoy creation and all of the wildflowers that are out at the moment. Keep going along Hunwick Rd which will eventually turn into Keith rd. This will take you along the banks of the Hay river, you can stop here for a spot of fishing or just for a picnic. Keep going along Keith Rd and you will end back on south coast highway. Now you can drift to the left and head back to Albany or to the right and head to Denmark. Enjoy the drive. This drive is about 35km of gravel rd, but well worth it. Note that this area also has a lot of wild live in it. Kangaroos, emus, foxes, rabbits.

Well second time lucky. 50-50 beat us to it last time which caused us a 30 minute fruitless search. That's how it goes. When I saw it come up on my emails this morning, we went out and retrieved it, as soon as my customer left. We had some fun on the 4wd tracks in this area when we went to find the cache. Clapping We will hide it again soon.

Now a short walk from the bitumen in a quiet spot under a big gum tree. Take your sand board if you are into a bit of drifting down the dune.

Your quest to discover Drifter Too begins by driving to the end of Princess Royal Drive and parking your vehicle around S 35 02.135 E 117 54.633. Follow the paved walk path east until you come across a small dirt trail uphill near this waypoint: S 35 02.117 E 117 55.010 (is there a clue here?). Now it's just you and the cache coordinates, and you should be able to follow existing trails to the cache without any need for bush bashing, although you will need to circumnavigate some rocks and fascinating remnants from a by-gone era.

If the coordinates are spot on, they should take you directly to the hide, but since there's always a chance that a GPS doesn't give an exact reading, the Canucks are providing some visual clues to help make life easier in case you need extra help.
Optional Clue #1: The first three images are all taken in the immediate vicinity of the cache location. One of these three pictures shows a hand pointing directly to where the cache is hidden, the other two are red herrings - it'snow up to you to figure out which is which!
Bonus Clue #2: The fourth image was taken a short walk away from the cache location, and has been edited to include a bonus clue. Do you see the light?

Enjoy the hunt, have fun finding a new home for Drifter Too, and do let us know something about your adventures and experiences when posting a logged find!

The Albany Canucks found this moveable cache today in its lovely location on Mt Melville, where it has been enjoying wonderful views for several months (see our full log with attached images). We had to dodge some drizzle and some photographer muggles sniffing around the area, but eventually came up with the goods, much to the triumph of the Junior Canuck who had the eureka moment. The cache made its way to our vehicle in disguise, hidden in a snack box of crackers, and was lovingly opened on our kitchen table for all to admire and enjoy. Thanks for including the `finders' cards! We left a Canuck calling card of our own, did some swaps, and will find the cache a new home very soon, and post new coordinates! It's been quietly waiting for a finder for more than three months, so let's hope that Drifter Too makes a move a little more quickly in the new location that we'll bring it to!

With barely enough day light left, I climbed the mountain. Then walked in ever decreasing circles as the gps zeroed in, before making a easy(ish)find. I have left the cache here for the time being in case other locals want to find and log. I'll be heading out of town in a couple of weeks and will move it on if it is still in the area.

Now sitting in a high spot overlooking the Albany harbour.

Woken by the sound of party poppers going off to celebrate the 10th birthday of caching in Australia. Great excitement to find that a new cache had been left in Albany, so it was off into the pre-dawn murk. Almost muggled by a jogger and his dog which almost (OK, absolutely thoroughly) distracted Ralph the cache retriever from his task of sniffing out the cache. Fortunately the evil tangoman is made of stronger stuff and was able to make the find. This was our first find on a moveable cache and made for a strange sensation to be walking away with the cache under the arm. Thanks heaps for the FTF prize.
