Description
To celebrate the 10th anniversary of geocaching in Australia, The Empire presents… Carpobrotus Glaucescens. The Empire’s 20th cache is located in Altona Coastal Park.
Altona Coastal Park, a 70 hectares intertidal and salt marsh area located 11 km from Melbourne CBD in the western suburb of Altona, is an important recreational and nature conservation area, providing habitats for a large biodiversity of flora and fauna.
Large areas of Carpobrotus glaucescens can be found at the park. It blooms in late October, resulting in swathes of pink flowers. Pigface, or Carpobrotus Glaucescens, is a succulent coastal groundcover native to temperate eastern Australia. You will need to walk over quite a bit of this plant to retrieve the cache. The fruit pulp is edible, with a flavor like salty strawberry or kiwifruit. The skin is discarded. Leaves are also edible cooked, and can be used as a preserved pickles.
I’m not sure how easy that would be to eat, but the cache shouldn’t be too hard to find. You are looking for an ammo tin containing a logbook and some swaps. You can access the cache via the walking track from either Millers Rd or Altona Rd.

Thanks anyway The Empire.........Probably needs a visit
Short-stuff and I had the pleasure of each other's company today, as it was her first parent-teacher interview tonight. It meant we could take our time getting out and about, waiting until the day had warmed up... so it was almost midday by the time we bundled into the car with a packed lunch and drove around the Ring Road to Cherry Lake.
Miller's Rd near the bike trail to the city seemed as good a place to park as any, as it was nice and close to the beginning of the new series around the lake, and convenient to this cache. With the little one trying one of my trekking poles on for size, we headed east first... to find a couple of sistema containers under the biggest piece of cover at GZ. All of the swaps and the logbook were still there and in good condition, so it looks like somebody has absconded with the ammo tin.
Thanks to The Empire for the cache; sized perfectly for a six-year-old to admire all of the swag.

I felt very exposed finding and signing the log. I would have stood out very clearly to someone watching from a distant window or yard. I didn't mess about. I did my business, secured the cache in its tin and back where I found it.
Thanks The Empire for the cache.
I'm amazed that we were the 28th finder of this one in its almost 31 months of existence and yet, it hadn't been found in just over 12 months .
TNLNSL. Thanks The Empire
A quick find and another tick on our GCA caching adventures.
TNLN . . SL . . Thanks for the hunt The Empire.

We had 41 caches on the list, and while we pulled up stumps at cache 33 we did bag a number on the way back to Hawthorn so that the Physics Teacher could get over 40 caches for the night. J and I had already collected these. Not bad in 6.5 hours.
We walked through it all to the obvious spot, but there was no ah-ha moment on this one. Love the container, always do. Thanks
It was a pretty good run I must say, with 34 in the bag tonight and many more for the Physics Teacher along the way back. Not bad considering we had to walk quite a distance for some of them.
Cache was in plain sight but then again, who would wander off into these parts anyway. Ammo cans are always a welcoming sight, something different than the usual lunch boxes. TFTC:)
We all enjoyed this stroll through the reserve, especially the dog.
Unfortunately there had been a light shower as we approached the location so the shoes were pretty damp by the time we had accessed the hide.
I’m not sure how it should be hidden but it was reasonably out of sight.
Took nothing
Left trinket
Our thanks to The Empire for the cache, bringing us to this location and a lesson on the local flora which we so often take for granted.
Cheers

Cache condition – fine although in need of some trinkets for the kids. (Or perhaps it has been raided by the locals)
TFTCH..TNLN.
Thanks.

Easy find.
Log book is missing, wrote my name on the info sheet that is there.
I hid the cache a little better, still easy but definitely not visible to a passer-by.
Thanks for this cache in an area that I have ridden often
My biggest trouble accessing this cache was was waiting for a gap in the traffic to cross the nearby road along Cherry Lake. Once I managed that, it was a nice stroll to GZ and a quick find. I'd like to come back here in Spring when the pigface is in flower, as I've always thought they're very pretty.

Thanks The Empire - considering the size of the cache, I was quite amused by the size of the logsheet .
You have to love wet pig face first thing in the morning, and here there was lots. An interesting placement of the cache had us searching for waaaaaay too long before spotting the large container.

Thanks The Empire for showighn us this area.
Had to stop and find it.
An easy find once I looked in the right spot!
Cheers gordo
I liked this cache - a pleasant location, well hidden in a way that I don't see very often, and it's a big'un, too! Many thanks for this one, my 99th GCA find.
What a beautiful area. We loved the ocean of pigface in front of us as we walked across from the track to GZ.
At GZ we had a few nervous minutes as GZ was obvious, but the cache wasn't. A bit more of a cunning look and we had the ammo can in hand. Very clever.
Took nothing, left nothing.
Thanks The Empire for this cache experience today. It was a great day for a walk along the track to and from the car at Altona Rd.

Nice to do some larger sized caches.
Thanks, Robmc.
Thanks to The_Empire!!
I parked the car, and walked through the wet grass to where GZ was, I spent around 10-15 minutes looking around the most likely spot, and then expanded my search to include all the other little shrubs and grasses around.
I was almost about to give up, but then I spotted it hidden in (well for me) an unlikely manner for an ammo can!
But YAY, a clean log book! Claimed FTF! and ran back to the car to see if I could beat pwags to the next one....
Thanks The Empire for the interesting snippit of information - I'm not sure how I would like to eat it either!
