Description

To celebrate the 10th anniversary of geocaching in Australia, The Empire presents…  Carpobrotus Glaucescens.  The Empire’s 20th cache is located in Altona Coastal Park.

Altona Coastal Park, a 70 hectares intertidal and salt marsh area located 11 km from Melbourne CBD in the western suburb of Altona, is an important recreational and nature conservation area, providing habitats for a large biodiversity of flora and fauna.

Large areas of Carpobrotus glaucescens can be found at the park. It blooms in late October, resulting in swathes of pink flowers.  Pigface, or Carpobrotus Glaucescens, is a succulent coastal groundcover native to temperate eastern Australia.  You will need to walk over quite a bit of this plant to retrieve the cache.  The fruit pulp is edible, with a flavor like salty strawberry or kiwifruit. The skin is discarded.  Leaves are also edible cooked, and can be used as a preserved pickles.

I’m not sure how easy that would be to eat, but the cache shouldn’t be too hard to find.  You are looking for an ammo tin containing a logbook and some swaps.  You can access the cache via the walking track from either Millers Rd or Altona Rd.

Logs

The cache at this location seems to be MIA so we'll archive it for now to stop it turning up in the search lists. If it is found then the owner can reenable the listing by placing an Unarchived log against it.

Walked in from the short side, but once at GZ couldn't manage to find the cache.....and being an ammo box and not found for a few years I fear the worse. Looked under the bush at GZ and also expanded the search a little just to try and be sure, but alas nothing.

Thanks anyway The Empire.........Probably needs a visit

Not too many muggles around so I was able to make my way to gz but after searching around the object I was unable to find the cache.

Wandering around Cherry Lake today, this one was close by. Very exposed location, great cache. Thanks

Short-stuff and I had the pleasure of each other's company today, as it was her first parent-teacher interview tonight. It meant we could take our time getting out and about, waiting until the day had warmed up... so it was almost midday by the time we bundled into the car with a packed lunch and drove around the Ring Road to Cherry Lake.

Miller's Rd near the bike trail to the city seemed as good a place to park as any, as it was nice and close to the beginning of the new series around the lake, and convenient to this cache. With the little one trying one of my trekking poles on for size, we headed east first... to find a couple of sistema containers under the biggest piece of cover at GZ. All of the swaps and the logbook were still there and in good condition, so it looks like somebody has absconded with the ammo tin.

Thanks to The Empire for the cache; sized perfectly for a six-year-old to admire all of the swag.

Found today while riding through the area for some exercise. found it easily oncew i arrived at GZ. The cache is in good condition.
I felt very exposed finding and signing the log. I would have stood out very clearly to someone watching from a distant window or yard. I didn't mess about. I did my business, secured the cache in its tin and back where I found it.
Thanks The Empire for the cache.

With our walk around this area today, this one was close enough for a quick diversion. The hide was possibly a little more obvious than it should have been at 11:20 so after signing the log, I replaced it firmly under the appropriate 'object'.

I'm amazed that we were the 28th finder of this one in its almost 31 months of existence and yet, it hadn't been found in just over 12 months Shocked.

TNLNSL. Thanks The Empire

The recent rains have flooded the path with smelly salty water (hopefully just salt - it smelt a bit piggy or something...) but its shallow and passable with inexpensive shoes... The ground is a bit squidgy too but not a problem. Cache located (spotted the likely spot before finding it), log signed and returne. TFTC

Tonight I was out with caching buddies jsmyong55 and The Physics Teacher. After meeting at Swinburne we took the West Gate Freeway to head out to Williamstown to pick up a few DNF’s from last week as well as continue on. The weather kept clear for us, but the wind was biting.

We had 41 caches on the list, and while we pulled up stumps at cache 33 we did bag a number on the way back to Hawthorn so that the Physics Teacher could get over 40 caches for the night. J and I had already collected these. Not bad in 6.5 hours.

We walked through it all to the obvious spot, but there was no ah-ha moment on this one. Love the container, always do. Thanks

Monday night seems to be a usual run for trailrunning and I nowadays. This time, we had Physics Teacher on board with us. We met up at Swinburne to begin our run. Traffic wasn't looking as good on Westgate but we went ahead with the plan. We had 41 on our list but we called quits after it was getting late and really chilly the later it got. I must remember to bring a jacket next time. Thank goodness it didn't rain, that would only make things worst.

It was a pretty good run I must say, with 34 in the bag tonight and many more for the Physics Teacher along the way back. Not bad considering we had to walk quite a distance for some of them.

Cache was in plain sight but then again, who would wander off into these parts anyway. Ammo cans are always a welcoming sight, something different than the usual lunch boxes. TFTC:)

A little more difficult to find this one, it took a fair bit of searching. Need to do this search on a dry day in order to stay dry. Took 2 rubbers, added a Mr Burns suction toy. Thx

Found by Team Ladava around 5.00 pm. We had a few hours after the chores were done so with rain forecast and the skies threatening we decided a lap to the Altona area would recharge the batteries.
We all enjoyed this stroll through the reserve, especially the dog.
Unfortunately there had been a light shower as we approached the location so the shoes were pretty damp by the time we had accessed the hide.
I’m not sure how it should be hidden but it was reasonably out of sight.
Took nothing
Left trinket
Our thanks to The Empire for the cache, bringing us to this location and a lesson on the local flora which we so often take for granted.
Cheers

Cache condition – fine although in need of some trinkets for the kids. (Or perhaps it has been raided by the locals)

A quick easy find after a nervous walk across the soft spongy Carpobrotus Glaucescens.

Cache in good condition though it's probably not where it was originally hidden... Native and non-native grass dominates the wetland at the moment. Thanks.

This cache has been on my list to find for a while but it has been too wet. Finally wandered over there today and I think it has been through a bit with the the rain/floods we've had. It was laying on it's side a few metres away from where it should of been I'm guessing. All good though, log paper a little damp and I couldn't get any pens to work (must remember to take own pen Confused ). Not sure how it was meant to be hidden so located it safely out of sight, but not hidden as such. TNLN.

Its amazing how some caches can disappear for a while when you look for them and then sudenly reappear later. I'm sure I would have found it quicker if it was there the whole time. Rolling Eyes

Thanks.

Dropped in today as I wasn't sure if the cache would have survived the recent flooding. It had! I was very impressed! It was very wet so I drained everything, the log was fine in the plastic zip lock bag. I've added some fresh paper to write on and changed the ammo can so I can dry this one out properly. Remember to hide it as it was intended so it can survive more flooding!

As this is not far from my daily commute and I left work early, I had no reason not to make a detour.
Easy find.
Log book is missing, wrote my name on the info sheet that is there.
I hid the cache a little better, still easy but definitely not visible to a passer-by.

Thanks for this cache in an area that I have ridden often

Found by Bob at 1605

My biggest trouble accessing this cache was was waiting for a gap in the traffic to cross the nearby road along Cherry Lake. Once I managed that, it was a nice stroll to GZ and a quick find. I'd like to come back here in Spring when the pigface is in flower, as I've always thought they're very pretty.

TNLN

Thanks The Empire - considering the size of the cache, I was quite amused by the size of the logsheet Smile.

You have to love wet pig face first thing in the morning, and here there was lots. An interesting placement of the cache had us searching for waaaaaay too long before spotting the large container.

Had to stop and find it.

An easy find once I looked in the right spot!

I love the feel of Carpobrotus Glaucescens under my feet!

I liked this cache - a pleasant location, well hidden in a way that I don't see very often, and it's a big'un, too! Many thanks for this one, my 99th GCA find.

I found this cache with caughtatwork today. This was a bit tricky but I found it when daddy couldn't. I loved all the plants. Thank you.

What a beautiful area. We loved the ocean of pigface in front of us as we walked across from the track to GZ.
At GZ we had a few nervous minutes as GZ was obvious, but the cache wasn't. A bit more of a cunning look and we had the ammo can in hand. Very clever.
Took nothing, left nothing.
Thanks The Empire for this cache experience today. It was a great day for a walk along the track to and from the car at Altona Rd.

Although I have ridden the bike path heaps of times, this is the first time I have walked along here! Fortunately, it hasn't rained for a while, as this area gets more than a bit soggy. Won't worry the good cache placement.
Nice to do some larger sized caches.
Thanks, Robmc.

After finding Burns Reserve I thought on this great morning I may as well walk the other way and complete this. A nice walk across to GZ and after a changng my search pattern the cache hide was soon in hand!!
Thanks to The_Empire!!

5 minutes to start time I was still getting the car and myself ready for my early morning adventure. I downloaded all the GPX files onto GSAK and gpsr, and off I went, noticing this one was my closest 10th Anniversary Cache without being my own and my best chance at a FTF with pwags somewhere about.

I parked the car, and walked through the wet grass to where GZ was, I spent around 10-15 minutes looking around the most likely spot, and then expanded my search to include all the other little shrubs and grasses around.

I was almost about to give up, but then I spotted it hidden in (well for me) an unlikely manner for an ammo can!
But YAY, a clean log book! Claimed FTF! and ran back to the car to see if I could beat pwags to the next one....

Thanks The Empire for the interesting snippit of information - I'm not sure how I would like to eat it either!
