Description
South west of Clermont in Queensland is a beautiful camping area on the shores of Theresa Creek Dam.
Ludwig Leichhardt was the first European to travel through this area in 1845. But by 1861 gold had been found, closely followed by copper and thousands flocked to try their luck. Within a few short years coal was discovered and that became the most profitable resource in the region.
To start with all the mining was done underground but in 1984 Rio Tinto, the then owners of Blair Athol, commenced a huge open cut mine. It was worth billions to Australia's economy but it was closed on 26 November 2012. As part of their good governance the company had built a dam on Theresa Creek to ensure the water supply to the town of Clermont. The town is now hoping for the Adani mine to go ahead to provide employment for the local people.
Meanwhile the dam provides excellent recreational facilities in an isolated inland area. Fishing, swimming, redclaw trapping skiing and picnicking are all treasured by the locals and tourists alike.
At the given coordinates is a plaque with a date on it. To calculate the south decimal minutes you need to add 4 plus the last two digits in the year to the given decimal minutes. To calculate the east decimal minutes you need to subtract twenty plus the day date from the given decimal minutes in the given coordinates. This will give you the coordinates for GZ.
