Description
This site once belonged to the Neptune Silver Mine, which was worked intermittently from 1871 to 1903; the precious metal first discovered here by the famous prospector James 'Philosopher' Smith. There are a couple of information boards here that explain the history and geology in more detail. There are no actual ruins and the shaft has long been filled in with sand; you will need to reflect and use your imagination. It is, however, a site of historical significance to the little town of Penguin.
If travelling east from the township, you will pass through Penguin's famous 'Garden Drive', which is glorious in spring.
Cache is a black, 1.5L Sistema.

Logs
After reading the previous logs I was continually watching my feet as I was approaching ground zero, I went to where the Garmin gps was saying but there was nothing there so I rounded my search out about 6m like in a previous log and I came to a spot that made me go “I reckon it’s there” well what do you know there was the cache. The contents was all dry and in good order. TFTC

Great bit of coastline with some fascinating history. Nice location.

This took a little time to find. (And not found since 2016 ) I parked near the Penguin sign, followed the track across the railway line, then waded through the vegetation, the deepest undergrowth to the top of my legs (I suspect I went through a hollow). At GZ I stepped over the hidden cache without seeing it. Searched about. Eventually I looked where I had stepped over. (About six metres from my Garmin's GZ.) Cache and log still good. TFTC hookline.

After making my way to the correct side of the tracks (I always seem to be on the wrong side of them) I did a bit of walking round in circles before I spotted the hide and was thinking how did I miss that before!
Thanks for the cache.

Parked in the convenient area and took the walk to GZ where the cache was found without issue. Cache is still in good condition.

Took a day out to Cache around the NW coast, of course we took a roundabout way to approach the cache but once we were at GZ it was a quick find, left a scout. TFTC
Found as we were on our way to Launceston from Burnie. took us a few minutes to find gz as we came a round about way. Cache in good order. TFTC
#GA284 - 15:50; I was out on the north west coast on a Great Aussie Icon Hunt (#5.6) and after a bite of lunch decided to collect a few of the local caches while I was here. Grabbed a trig and nearby GC cache before heading on to this one. Parked the geomobile beside the road and headed off and across the tracks to GZ. The GPSr had me going around in circles, so I let the geosenses loose and soon had the cache in hand. Despite being unloved for coming on 2 years the cache was in good nick and awaits the next finder. TFTC hookline

A nice easy find before the sun went down. No penguins this day but lots of bunnies . Thanks for the cache
Didn't think I would ever cache at an old silver mine that was actually on the beach. Who would have guessed. That is one of the best things about geocaching.....we learn so many interesting things from folks like you who are knowledgable about the local history. TFTC [^]
Had a good look about this area as i am also a keen prospector who pans at least once a week. I have read much about this area on the net in my hunt for gold.Who would ever have thought my new hobby would bring me here. Top cache spot. left a couple of small items that might come in handy to someone.cheers etrexer
Last day of Holidays. Thought we would grab this one. Weren't sure of how we would go withoiut GPSr. Never fear have Google will travel. A quick scout around and voila. FOUND IT. A Bit disapointing really the family was too busy collecting Cuttlefish. TFTC

Interesting places we visit when caching never knew there were mines here TFTC
We don't realise how many mines there were in the area until someone places a cache and brings it to our attention. Then a quick and easy find. TNLNSL TFTC
Thanks for reporting the damage, Runciple. I visited the cache and carried out some repairs. Thankfully it could be fixed with a bit of tape. The cache may not look too pretty but it should hold up a while longer. The contents of the cache were still in great condition.
Easy find but container lid has been cracked and need urgent repair. Very interesting bit of history.

Found it after walking thru the weeds in sandals and getting very scratched. Got back to car and then changed into stronger shoes. Nothing like doing things the wrong way round. TFTC
Found this one while looking for a spot to hide stignome
anyway found this one in the storm that crossed tas so while we were there we left STIGNOME with this cache
so if you are quick you can get tow for one and send STIG on his way
both caches are side by side so they should be easy found
Remember STIG needs heaps of miles so the further he travels the better

An interesting cache to find after TAFE studies. I enjoyed the history and thought it remarkable to have a mine shaft right on the shoreline. How did the miners expect to keep the water out in the days of primitive pumps.
Thanks hookline for another quality cache (that I forgot to log)

Good coords and an obvious hide (to a geocacher) like this cache are always pleasant.
Now if you can just manage to stop the wind blowing like it was it would be hugely appreciated
Thanks hookline

Found the history associated with this cache very interesting. The short walk was enjoyable. Happy 10th Anniversary. Logged at 1210hrs just before having lunch at the pub. Thanks and cheers OldSaint.
No visable sign of the old mine but the sign tells the story. There is a lot of old history out there for us cachers to visit. TNLN Thanks

A very interesting bit of history. Thanks for placing the cache to highlight it, Hookline. Even though we're heading into winter, those Penguin roadside gardens are still very pretty. Enjoyed the drive. Thanks.
Once again its taken a geocache to find out the history of this area....so many thanks Hookline. Cache is all well...TFTC..Cheers.

This cache was on the route of one of regular early morning walks. Seeing the cache published last night we decided to take this walk today. This morning was very calm and mild. We hadn't realised the history of the area until the cache was posted and information near GZ added to our knowledge. TFTC Also, FTF
