Description

This site once belonged to the Neptune Silver Mine, which was worked intermittently from 1871 to 1903; the precious metal first discovered here by the famous prospector James 'Philosopher' Smith. There are a couple of information boards here that explain the history and geology in more detail. There are no actual ruins and the shaft has long been filled in with sand; you will need to reflect and use your imagination. It is, however, a site of historical significance to the little town of Penguin.

If travelling east from the township, you will pass through Penguin's famous 'Garden Drive', which is glorious in spring.

Cache is a black, 1.5L Sistema.

Logs

26-Jun-19
After reading the previous logs I was continually watching my feet as I was approaching ground zero, I went to where the Garmin gps was saying but there was nothing there so I rounded my search out about 6m like in a previous log and I came to a spot that made me go “I reckon it’s there” well what do you know there was the cache. The contents was all dry and in good order. TFTC Clan Cerberus

Great bit of coastline with some fascinating history. Nice location.

This took a little time to find. (And not found since 2016 Shocked) I parked near the Penguin sign, followed the track across the railway line, then waded through the vegetation, the deepest undergrowth to the top of my legs (I suspect I went through a hollow). At GZ I stepped over the hidden cache without seeing it. Searched about. Eventually I looked where I had stepped over. (About six metres from my Garmin's GZ.) Cache and log still good. TFTC hookline.

After making my way to the correct side of the tracks (I always seem to be on the wrong side of them) I did a bit of walking round in circles before I spotted the hide and was thinking how did I miss that before!
Thanks for the cache.

20-Jan-16
Parked in the convenient area and took the walk to GZ where the cache was found without issue. Cache is still in good condition.

Thanks for another one Hookline....

Took a day out to Cache around the NW coast, of course we took a roundabout way to approach the cache but once we were at GZ it was a quick find, left a scout. TFTC

Found as we were on our way to Launceston from Burnie. took us a few minutes to find gz as we came a round about way. Cache in good order. TFTC

#GA284 - 15:50; I was out on the north west coast on a Great Aussie Icon Hunt (#5.6) and after a bite of lunch decided to collect a few of the local caches while I was here. Grabbed a trig and nearby GC cache before heading on to this one. Parked the geomobile beside the road and headed off and across the tracks to GZ. The GPSr had me going around in circles, so I let the geosenses loose and soon had the cache in hand. Despite being unloved for coming on 2 years the cache was in good nick and awaits the next finder. TFTC hookline DancingClan Cerberus

Didn't think I would ever cache at an old silver mine that was actually on the beach. Who would have guessed. That is one of the best things about geocaching.....we learn so many interesting things from folks like you who are knowledgable about the local history. TFTC [^]

Thanks for reporting the damage, Runciple. I visited the cache and carried out some repairs. Thankfully it could be fixed with a bit of tape. The cache may not look too pretty but it should hold up a while longer. The contents of the cache were still in great condition.

Found this one while looking for a spot to hide stignome

anyway found this one in the storm that crossed tas so while we were there we left STIGNOME with this cache
so if you are quick you can get tow for one and send STIG on his way

both caches are side by side so they should be easy found

Remember STIG needs heaps of miles so the further he travels the better

NVery informative...many thanks.

An interesting cache to find after TAFE studies. I enjoyed the history and thought it remarkable to have a mine shaft right on the shoreline. How did the miners expect to keep the water out in the days of primitive pumps.
Thanks hookline for another quality cache (that I forgot to log)

Good coords and an obvious hide (to a geocacher) like this cache are always pleasant.
Now if you can just manage to stop the wind blowing like it was it would be hugely appreciated Smile

This cache was on the route of one of regular early morning walks. Seeing the cache published last night we decided to take this walk today. This morning was very calm and mild. We hadn't realised the history of the area until the cache was posted and information near GZ added to our knowledge. TFTC Also, FTF
