Description

Burke and Wills (Traditional): Mungo National Park.

Burke and Wills:

Burke and Wills passed through here on their way north.

Glancing about him at his fellow explorers, John King alone would return this way alive. The Irishman, 22, served in the British army and was in Peshawar in 1854 during the Indian mutiny. He met Landells there while convalescing from a fever and came with him and the camels to Australia. His salary as a member of the expedition was £120 a year, and he was rewarded afterward with a lifetime pension, but he died of tuberculosis in 1872, still just aged 34.

About this location:

Balranald bills itself as "the gateway to Mungo National Park", which was Australia's first national park to be named a World Heritage site.

More information on the World heritage Mungo National Park can be found here.

Mungo National Park is a part of the Willandra Lakes World Heritage Area, a chain of dried-out lakes that were once strung between Willandra Creek and the main channel of the Lachlan River in Outback NSW.

Lake Mungo dried up around 14,000 years ago, and today a great crescent-shaped dune, called the Walls of China, stretches along the eastern shore of the lakebed.

In 1969 the remains of a cremated human skeleton, known as Mungo Woman, were found. Six years later, Mungo Man was discovered, buried in a pit strewn with ochre. Both skeletons are believed to be around 40,000 years old.

Stone flake tools are scattered across the landscape, and peeking out of the mud are ancient wombat holes, fossilised chunks of Eucalyptus trees, and the bones of long-dead marsupials, including extinct buffalo-sized wombats and giant kangaroos.

After being muggled out at the Burke and Wills in town we made out way out to this one instead. It's been a long time since this one has had a find but it was all safe and sound, an easy find in a fairly isolated place. TFTC

#GA1072 - 14:55; Day 1 of the Melbourne Mega Mission with Sol de lune and taking the scenic route from Canberra to Anglesea via Balranald so we can collect a few GCA caches on the way. After being unable to access GZ for the cache in the town, we headed north where, much to my relief, this one was quickly located and the log signed. The cache is in good nick and awaiting the next finder. TFTC Black Bunny Very HappyClan Cerberus

A short trip down Burk & Wills Road and we spotted the large ammo can beside a fallen log. Container and contents were in excellent condition. Several muggles appear to have signed the log both in a respectful manner. We placed the ammo can behind the log and covered it with bark and a piece of old corrugated iron.

Thanks for another great cache in this series Black Bunny

South Australia 2013 with Sol de Lune. We headed off on 12/4 and arrived home on 28/4. The trip was to visit the SA series so more time could be spent at the Mega itself next year. We did a huge variety of caching around Murray Bridge, the Mid North, Yorke Peninsula and Whyalla Region. Apart from one wet night and two wet days we were able to spend heaps of time caching.

Thanks.

Another B&W cache grabbed while out this way heading to Sth Australia with Albida. Decided to take the short detour up this road for this one and a GC at the pub further up the road. Glad we did.

Thanks for another one BB.....

This is the furthest north we can go on this trip, and what a brilliant location for it. We were so thrilled to be able to see the Burke and Wills Road at this time of year, a beautiful sunny day, but the recent rains have greened the area up quite nicely. We decided to leave Alice the Ship of the Desert swaggie here to continue her journey with someone else.

Many thanks to Black Bunny for your contribution to this series of caches. I can highly recommend them to anyone looking for a themed few days of geocaching. Cheers to everyone involved in the series!
