Description

Welcome to the 6th GCA cache by “Keeper of Time”.

Burke & Wills Camp IV. (Lancefield.) Thursday, 23/8/1860

Having left camp III at the Belinda Vale property of Sir Rupert Clarke the expedition continued north over slippery black volcanic soil that reminded them of soft-soap and then through forested country towards Lancefield. Lancefield was then beside the Deep Creek at the foot of the Great Dividing Range, about two miles north of its present location. It was a busy township with a brewery, brick kilns, several shops and hotels and a population of about 300.

When the railway from Lancefield Junction (now called Clarkefield) was mooted, the old township of Lancefield started to die and the present location of Lancefield began to grow on its new site. The impressive three-storey hotel on the highway was built on the confident, but erroneous, assumption that the railway station would be established near by.

Only one building remains of the old Lancefield township which was formerly Mustey's butcher's shop, it is close to the road junction just beyond the bridge over the Deep Creek. The butcher who sold meat to the expedition was the grandfather of Mr. Charles Mustey who still occupies the original premises as a residence.

At the above co-ordinates you will find easy parking and a marker to the Burke and Wills Expedition. As you read the information look up and to the right at the area where the old Lancefield township used to be and where the expedition camp was located.

You will need to find the coordinates of the final cache location which are hidden here in a concealed container. Once you have the necessary information it is just a short walk (or drive) to GZ which is located at the start of The Three Chain Road which has now been renamed Burke and Wills Track.

The cache is a 2 litre sistema in an ammo box which has been painted black and is hidden at the base of a tree. Please ensure that the cache is well hidden before you leave and I would ask that you help maintain the standard of the cache by placing quality swaps only. As always, be mindful of the local wildlife both good and bad.

Another quick find as we heading back to the airport, well i say back but we landed in Adelaide a week ago and are flying out from Melbourne after going to the Mega but hey just think of all the caches we would have missed if we did it the 'normal' way Laughing

Thanks for the cache.

Found this very well stocked, clean, dry, cache, after retrieving and replacing the coordinates.
Thanks for the very accurate information and for bringing us to this historical spot.
So glad we set this route to Geelong today, as it has taken us through some amazing scenery to get here.
Thank you for the cache Keeper of Time

We decided to surprise the kids with a weekend away so decided on Bendigo. This was our first cache after landing and picking up our rental car.
With only one Burke and Wills cache in Tasmania its nice to add a few more to our find list. A great little multi to start us off. Nice cache!

School holidays meant arranging a break for the better half, so zombeefish was collected from the in-laws' after a nice dinner and we began our caching adventures from there.

As I hadn't yet visited the Burke and Wills sites on the back road (the aptly named Burke and Wills Track) through Lancefield and Mia Mia, this seemed the perfect opportunity to cover that part of the route...

This was our first stop on the way out, and we quickly found what we needed at the initial coordinates, which logically led us further along, to what I consider to be the signature container of the B&W series. A pleasure to find, as always. Thanks, Keeper of Time.

Day 2 on the way to the Surf Coast Mega with LuckyL10n. We decided on the long way round to grab a few GCA caches....

Second last one in the B&W series for this trip...and a multi to boot. No problems working out the final co-ords and once at GZ, it was great to see 2y'stassies had been here a couple of days earlier....and keeping up with their finds in the series as well.

Like others, I've been chasing caches in this series for a while and with the Mega in Anglesea, this was a great chance to grab a few more...20 in fact....making a total of 58. Sill a few to go, but hopefully they will come.

Thanks for another one KoT.....always like a multi.

Since this series appeared in 2010 we have enjoyed visiting places Burk & Wills passed through. Today we had the opportunity to look for 3 more in this series. This was the first. At wp1 we were pleased to quickly locate the remàining piece of the cache container with the infoŕmation we needed. We arrived at gz aand were delighted to find a well hidden ammo can. Cache and contents were in excellent condition.
Thanks Keeper of Time for an excellent cache, well hidden and a very good size.

#GA1014 - 10:15; I decided to make use of a spare day in Victoria with the geoteen to head north from Melbourne along the path taken by Burke and Wills (and others) to collect some more of the caches in this series. The plan was to reach Bendigo, then head on to Elmore before heading back to the big smoke. I'd collected my first for the day at Queens Park in Moonee Ponds, which had proved a bit of a nemesis cache for me until today. I had collected another two in the series at Bolinda before heading on to Lancefield, where I grabbed a GC cache and a very nice pie at the local bakery before heading on to the posted coords for this cache. At the posted coords I managed to find the remnants of the container and fortunately it was the piece with the coords for GZ on it. I then headed over to GZ, where I was again a little worried beacuse of recent clean up efforts and fallen trees/branches. I decided to give it one more try and much to my surprise located the cache, with contents in pristine condition! TFTC Keeper of Time Very HappyClan Cerberus

Container at first waypoint is broken but still found the coordinates to locate the cache. Only problem was an aggressive magpie.

A log to replace a log that has disappeared from GCA QuestionBrick Wall

I stopped here on my way to the outskirts of Melbourne to tackle the Woodlands series of GC caches. At the initial coordinates the required info was quickly found then off to GZ where another quick find was made. I left some of my pathtags to replace the B&W ones that have been collected by previous finders.

Thank you KoT for placing this B&W cache.

This is my first B&W, an easy enough multi that I picked up while passing through this area on the bike on a chilly but sunny winter saturday morning. Good to see a decent sized cache in such good condition.
TNLN signed the log only, thanks.

30-Dec-11
An easy multi - I parked down the road and walked back to locate the hidden clue at a grass-covered B&W monument. Off to GZ for another quick find of a typical B&W ammo box cache Smile Took Tigersden's pathtag (my new pathtags didn't arrive in time for the Xmas shutdown so I'm out of them at present for swaps Sad ) TFTC

Grabbed this on our way past whilst travelling, a nice quickeasy find

Passed by this way on our way to Melbourne, RCH to get tests for Geo Jrettt, Had to give it a go when it just appeared in front of us on Tom Tom, A short detour and we were at GZ, with the co-ords in our trusty HCx we were searching, having found the cache we swapped pathtags and SL TFTC

Found in the company of the fiancé at 1840 on a cold, windy and drizzly day researching places for dinner for our day next March.
Having an average lunch in Woodend and the last cache found prior to our dinner appointment.
I was a bit hesitant getting on my hands and knees to look for the smaller container, it has been raining on and off the whole day!
I had a little chuckle to myself and plugged in the new coordinates.

I was a bit worried at GZ if the cache was still here, or if the up-rooted trees have burried the cache.
With all the rain, the holes of the up-rooted trees were filled with water, but due to the nature of the cache, the contents were dry.

Thanks again Keeper of Time for this cache.

A chance drive by grab of someone else's B&W cache with Just a cacher on a run throught the Victorian countryside.

A chance to stretch the legs (both 2 & 4) and grab another cache in the series.

Thanks for the cache Keeper of Time

Great! It was wonderful to find somebody else's B&W cache, for a change! I should mention that the container for the pathtags is empty. You might want to recover that smalll container, some time.

Found by Team Ladava around 3.00pm
Love this Burke & Wills series and this was no exception.
Excellent cache notes, a reason to be there and a large and well stocked cache. What more could we want.
I have certainly driven past this cairn numerous times and never spotted it.
As we headed up the road comfortably in our modern vehicle on the bitumen road toward Baynton we tried to imagine what it would be like traversing the steep terrain with wagons and all the goods and chattels deemed necessary for a very long expedition.
A remarkable feat of endurance.

Woo-Hoo our first B & W! We have been looking forward to commencing this series of caches and today we happened to be in the area to log this one on our way through. We weren't disappointed either although the landscape would have altered dramatically since their time. Have been fortunate enough to visit the Dig Tree numerous times as well.

Enjoyed this one Keeper of Time, we will look forward to the next installment Very Happy

I decided to take a 'little' diversion from my Christmas shopping and see if I could find this one. Both the final coordinates and the cache presented themselves quite quickly and I was soon logging the find in between the rain squalls at 13:05.

Another excellent instalment in this wonderful series but I just wonder how many people know that cairn is there Think.

TNLNSL. Thanks Keeper of Time.

Stopped and solved this cache on the way to Heathcote for a Rogaine.
Not able to park very close to GZ as the roadside was very boggy and a little unsafe. Made the trek to GZ and found easily whilst getting saturated.
Thanks to all for the B&W series of caches.

22-Oct-10
I was interrupted at the posted location by a well dressed couple looking for the Lancefield cemetery - I knew where that was having been to a cache there not long ago! The first find was not quick, due to my ability not to see the obvious. A short run to the next place found a well stocked cache (seems to be the norm with the B&W!) Thanks.

Found by PR&F on 9/10/10 @ 9.20am with The Empire.
#3 of 26 finds today as we traced the Burke & Wills Route. This was our 1st B&W cache for the day. I took a Keeper of Time Pathtag. Thanks!
Nice quick find to start our B&W adventure, TFTC!

A clever redirector at the first waypoint and GabGab and I were on our way. With GabGab in charge of the GPS she directed us towards GZ and located the very well done cache without too much trouble.
What a well done cache. I think the B&W project caches are amongst the best I have ever seen. Such quality in the cache containers and swaps and this was no different. High marks Keeper of Time.
Took nothing, left nothing.
Thanks to Keeper of Time for this cache and for joining in on the Burke & Wills Project.

Found at 10:15am on our way north along the B&W trail. We quickly found the sneakily-hidden container with the coordinates within, then headed off for the short trip to GZ, where we found a well-hidden and well-stocked ammo can. So good to finally get off the main roads here, too. Many thanks to Keeper of Time for contributing to this series - I can highly recommend the trip north to Balranald following this trail - a very enjoyable couple of days. Cheers!

Had to head home and pick up the 3yo, so this was the last for the afternoon. Found the item with co-ords at the rock, but hadn't read the description (or even that it wasw a multi Embarassed ) so thought someone had taken the cache contents and left the container.

Thankfully, I had loaded the B&W caches into GSAK on the work laptop this morning... and brought it will me (I usually don't) as the iphone signal was pretty nonexistant, so couldn't look up on hte internet. Reading the description made me realise what I had actually found, and since the weather was starting to go nasty, I drove to the GZ. The rain started about 2 mins after I got back in the car after logging the cache.

Found by Roma and Max.
Time constraints determined this had to be our last find for today and it proved to be up with the best.
Accurate numbers, quality containers and contents.
Thanks again.

*FTF* @ 11:50 am.

The third cache of my GCA B&W FTF run.

I've driven past here many times but didn't know I was following in such august footsteps. The redirector was a surprise. If I'd had my wits about me I'd have set up a photo for that GCA cache. Was it "Big and Little"? Laughing
Also, call me innocent but I had no idea that sistema containers came in that colour!
The cache when I found it was sitting in about 15cm of water after the recent rains but there was none in the outer or inner container.
Took: FTF prize (the young daughter loves the watch!). Left: Butterfly pathtag and big marble.

Thanks for all the work that went into these well prepared and well stocked caches and thanks for bringing me to this historic spot Keeper of Time.
