Description
Welcome to the 6th GCA cache by “Keeper of Time”.
Burke & Wills Camp IV. (Lancefield.) Thursday, 23/8/1860
Having left camp III at the Belinda Vale property of Sir Rupert Clarke the expedition continued north over slippery black volcanic soil that reminded them of soft-soap and then through forested country towards Lancefield. Lancefield was then beside the Deep Creek at the foot of the Great Dividing Range, about two miles north of its present location. It was a busy township with a brewery, brick kilns, several shops and hotels and a population of about 300.
When the railway from Lancefield Junction (now called Clarkefield) was mooted, the old township of Lancefield started to die and the present location of Lancefield began to grow on its new site. The impressive three-storey hotel on the highway was built on the confident, but erroneous, assumption that the railway station would be established near by.
Only one building remains of the old Lancefield township which was formerly Mustey's butcher's shop, it is close to the road junction just beyond the bridge over the Deep Creek. The butcher who sold meat to the expedition was the grandfather of Mr. Charles Mustey who still occupies the original premises as a residence.
At the above co-ordinates you will find easy parking and a marker to the Burke and Wills Expedition. As you read the information look up and to the right at the area where the old Lancefield township used to be and where the expedition camp was located.
You will need to find the coordinates of the final cache location which are hidden here in a concealed container. Once you have the necessary information it is just a short walk (or drive) to GZ which is located at the start of The Three Chain Road which has now been renamed Burke and Wills Track.
The cache is a 2 litre sistema in an ammo box which has been painted black and is hidden at the base of a tree. Please ensure that the cache is well hidden before you leave and I would ask that you help maintain the standard of the cache by placing quality swaps only. As always, be mindful of the local wildlife both good and bad.

Thanks for the cache.
Thanks for the very accurate information and for bringing us to this historical spot.
So glad we set this route to Geelong today, as it has taken us through some amazing scenery to get here.
Thank you for the cache Keeper of Time
Signed and replaced. TFT.
With only one Burke and Wills cache in Tasmania its nice to add a few more to our find list. A great little multi to start us off. Nice cache!
We are currently touring Victoria with our geovan in tow, using geocaching as a guide. We have visited many amazing locations through geocaching and today we found your cache B&W (M) Camp IV (Lancefield). A straightforward multi and find. Another B&W found always good to find.
Many thanks Keeper of Time for publishing this cache for our enjoyment and adding to our geocaching experience today.
Tassie Trekkers are now a locationless geocache we have published a 'Geocacher cache' - Travelling Trekkers GA10932 - so if you spot us in your area sign our log book and receive a code word to earn yourself a We were one of the lucky teams to receive a pathtag from Geocaching Australia for publishing a "Geocacher Cache" - thanks Geocaching Australia.

Easy find.
Thanks for bring me here and cache.
School holidays meant arranging a break for the better half, so zombeefish was collected from the in-laws' after a nice dinner and we began our caching adventures from there.
As I hadn't yet visited the Burke and Wills sites on the back road (the aptly named Burke and Wills Track) through Lancefield and Mia Mia, this seemed the perfect opportunity to cover that part of the route...
This was our first stop on the way out, and we quickly found what we needed at the initial coordinates, which logically led us further along, to what I consider to be the signature container of the B&W series. A pleasure to find, as always. Thanks, Keeper of Time.
GCA#222
Second last one in the B&W series for this trip...and a multi to boot. No problems working out the final co-ords and once at GZ, it was great to see 2y'stassies had been here a couple of days earlier....and keeping up with their finds in the series as well.
Like others, I've been chasing caches in this series for a while and with the Mega in Anglesea, this was a great chance to grab a few more...20 in fact....making a total of 58. Sill a few to go, but hopefully they will come.
Thanks for another one KoT.....always like a multi.
Thanks Keeper of Time for an excellent cache, well hidden and a very good size.
I stopped here on my way to the outskirts of Melbourne to tackle the Woodlands series of GC caches. At the initial coordinates the required info was quickly found then off to GZ where another quick find was made. I left some of my pathtags to replace the B&W ones that have been collected by previous finders.
Thank you KoT for placing this B&W cache.
TNLN signed the log only, thanks.
Having an average lunch in Woodend and the last cache found prior to our dinner appointment.
I was a bit hesitant getting on my hands and knees to look for the smaller container, it has been raining on and off the whole day!
I had a little chuckle to myself and plugged in the new coordinates.
I was a bit worried at GZ if the cache was still here, or if the up-rooted trees have burried the cache.
With all the rain, the holes of the up-rooted trees were filled with water, but due to the nature of the cache, the contents were dry.
Thanks again Keeper of Time for this cache.
A chance to stretch the legs (both 2 & 4) and grab another cache in the series.
Thanks for the cache Keeper of Time
Love this Burke & Wills series and this was no exception.
Excellent cache notes, a reason to be there and a large and well stocked cache. What more could we want.
I have certainly driven past this cairn numerous times and never spotted it.
As we headed up the road comfortably in our modern vehicle on the bitumen road toward Baynton we tried to imagine what it would be like traversing the steep terrain with wagons and all the goods and chattels deemed necessary for a very long expedition.
A remarkable feat of endurance.
Took Pathtag
Left Silver Trinket
Our thanks to Keeper of Time for the cache and bringing us to this location.
Cheers

Cache condition – fine
Enjoyed this one Keeper of Time, we will look forward to the next installment
Another excellent instalment in this wonderful series but I just wonder how many people know that cairn is there .
TNLNSL. Thanks Keeper of Time.
Not able to park very close to GZ as the roadside was very boggy and a little unsafe. Made the trek to GZ and found easily whilst getting saturated.
Thanks to all for the B&W series of caches.
#3 of 26 finds today as we traced the Burke & Wills Route. This was our 1st B&W cache for the day. I took a Keeper of Time Pathtag. Thanks!
Nice quick find to start our B&W adventure, TFTC!
4th of 28 today on the Burke and Wills route. Top little multi on the start of our Burke and Wills journey today. Thanks for the cache.

A clever redirector at the first waypoint and GabGab and I were on our way. With GabGab in charge of the GPS she directed us towards GZ and located the very well done cache without too much trouble.
What a well done cache. I think the B&W project caches are amongst the best I have ever seen. Such quality in the cache containers and swaps and this was no different. High marks Keeper of Time.
Took nothing, left nothing.
Thanks to Keeper of Time for this cache and for joining in on the Burke & Wills Project.

GAFF 1
Thankfully, I had loaded the B&W caches into GSAK on the work laptop this morning... and brought it will me (I usually don't) as the iphone signal was pretty nonexistant, so couldn't look up on hte internet. Reading the description made me realise what I had actually found, and since the weather was starting to go nasty, I drove to the GZ. The rain started about 2 mins after I got back in the car after logging the cache.
Found by Roma and Max.
Time constraints determined this had to be our last find for today and it proved to be up with the best.
Accurate numbers, quality containers and contents.
Thanks again.
Cheers,
from Romax.

The third cache of my GCA B&W FTF run.
I've driven past here many times but didn't know I was following in such august footsteps. The redirector was a surprise. If I'd had my wits about me I'd have set up a photo for that GCA cache. Was it "Big and Little"?
Also, call me innocent but I had no idea that sistema containers came in that colour!
The cache when I found it was sitting in about 15cm of water after the recent rains but there was none in the outer or inner container.
Took: FTF prize (the young daughter loves the watch!). Left: Butterfly pathtag and big marble.
Thanks for all the work that went into these well prepared and well stocked caches and thanks for bringing me to this historic spot Keeper of Time.
