Description
This spot provides great views of Springbank Island and also south to the new Parliament House and its prominent flag pole.
The area now covered by Lake Burley Griffin was some of the first land inhabited by Canberra residents in what is called Old Acton.
Much of the history of the area has been gathered and can be found by searching for 'Sunken Stories of Old Acton'.
Many of the families that lived there still reside in Canberra and recount stories from their childhood before the river was dammed to form the lake.
One family was the Kaye family who held the land from 1844 to 1855, and again from 1924 until 1961.
Apparently they moved home in 1855 as they found the area unpleasant to live in because of the large number of snakes in the swamps of the nearby Molongo River.
It is great to have their stories to help try and imagine life in Canberra during those times.
Please BYOP - room for small swaps

After the massive day yesterday, I decided on a slower day today. This included finding the GCA caches, near the National Museum of Australia. Yes, I did visit the museum which is the first time since 2016… I think. A lot has changed since then. After this, I headed just up the road to the Botanic Gardens to find the Labs around the area. Nice easy going and great fun. It was then time to head home. TB visit on all caches. I would like to thank all CO’s for the caches I found and for allowing them to bring enjoyment to the caching community. TFTC’s and TFTE’s
P.S. I am hosting two CITO’s before the end of the year. The first being: TAR and CITO #4 (GC9J99Z) on 29 November 2021. The second being: Boxing Day CITO #2 (GC9J9AX) on 26 December 2021. Hope to see you there!
Thanks KK....cache all good.
Thanks, Kittykatch, for putting these out for us to find!
Thanks for the cache Kittykatch.
