Description

This is a special Burke & Wills cache listed on Geocaching Australia.

This cache requires you to visit a Burke & Wills historical location and take a photo as described along with your GPS receiver and if possible yourself in the picture. Once you have logged this cache as a find, you are required to load your picture to your log to validate your find.

Validating Your Log
Take a picture of your GPS receiver and if possible yourself in front of The Royal Society building and attach it to your online log.

Important Information
The Burke Wills Historical Society notes: "The actual route Burke and Wills followed once they left Camp 78 is unknown and one of the most intensely debated issues. Wills' map and some of his journals containing astronomical observations have been lost. Because the journals have never been transcribed, it means the expedition's track north of the Diamantina, through the gibber rises, confused sand dunes and extensive claypans, is a matter for conjecture."
Travel in Outback Australia can be extremely hazardous. Plan your trip with care and seek and follow local advice on what precautions to take. Be aware of private property restrictions. Do not risk your life to log this geocache.

About This Location
This is the home on La Trobe Street of the Royal Society of Victoria, which originated the idea of the Victorian Exploring Expedition (VEE), as the Burke-Wills endeavour was originally called.
The committee in charge received 700 applications from would-be participants, and Burke interviewed 300 of them at the hall in just three hours on July 4, 1860 - then chose only people he knew.

Many planning sessions for the expedition took place at this hall, and as the day of departure approached, the men of the party signed a formal memorandum of understanding and heard a stirring farwell speech here, one of several given at various church and community-hall send-offs.

Another quick find while out in Melbourne for the night

Thanks for the B&W

I traveled back home to SA from Perth for family reasons and decided that Melbourne is only a short hop from Adelaide, so I logged an attendance at the Parkville Mega event and headed over for 5 days in Melbourne. I hired an E bike and had it for 4 days so was able to get around to many places and grab lots of caches as well as biking from the Youth Hostel in North Melbourne to Parkeville which was only a short ride. After checking into the hostel on Thursday i jumped on a tram and headed down to the markets and then jumped off and went for a stroll through a park nearby for another cache. On the tuesday after the event I rode all around the cbd getting caches and was passing through here to go to some other caches so i stopped by here to have a look and and grab a photo photos so i could log the cache. The things you see when riding a bike....much better than having a car. Thanks for the cache Geocaching Australia ClappingClapping

After checking out of the Motel I had nearly the whole day to do caches around the area before heading out to the airport so decided to walk from the motel into town doing GCA caches along the way.

From this cache I was doing Burke and Wills caches and a couple of history caches as I passed them.

Requested image was taken and attached.

Thanks Geocaching Australia for the cache.

Another old treasure of Melbourne. The Society as the sponsor of the trip is obviously a vital link

Nice old building.

After getting Daddy Long Legs irradiated at nearby St V's, we decided to take a walk around the local area finding caches before we had to return to have the scans done. I'd not found a Burke and Wills cache before so this was quite an exciting first for me. We dodged a stinking smoker (I swear there's more smokers around than there was when I lived in Melbourne) and took some happy snaps. TFTC Geocaching Australia

Today we decided to tick off some B&W virtuals and bag ourselves a Dragon Zone trophy. This was one we snapped and we enjoyed our visit to the various locations.

Thanks Geocaching Australia.

Heading out for lunch for a buddy and we were going to a restaurant just around the corner from this cache. How unfortunate. I ordered my lunch then nipped out for a quick photo. When I returned to my friends I then regaled them with all the knowledge I had learned. Thanks for bringing me here Smile

So the plan was to get up at 07:00 and spend the next three hours walking through Melbourne until the conference started... Well that didn't go according to plan!

This series helps me to go through the interesting points in the city of Melbourne, it's really appreciated.

#GA329 - 14:00; I was in Melbourne for a few days on the way home after a trip to Tassie. I had picked up my first B&W cache last month while in Melbourne on a Great Aussie Icon Hunt and the opportunity arose to continue with the series. This is the sixth of 18 successful finds over a couple of days. Another visit to a familar area. TFTC Geocaching Australia Very Happy

Close enough to my Carlton motel to be part of a stroll before dinner to get this and the other nearby virtual near the Royal Exhibition building. Phone is camera and GPS, so here is a photo of me in front of the building. Cheers.

Engaged in my own personal expedition through a strange city on a trusty share bike, I took a gamble on this one. Could I get to it and back before my free thirty minutes ran out. Alas, for the second time today, missed by thirty seconds and blew $2. Just shows, there's still risks in expeditions today! Very HappyClan Phoenix

15-Apr-14
A quick stop in the early morning on the way to work. Best time for caching around the city with few muggles and no parking problems.
Thanks Geocaching Australia for the cache and the history.

Out for a Burke & Wills walking tour of Melbourne. Despite the rain, enjoyed the walk and the information along the way.
Thanks for the B&W series.

Between nights out celebrating birthdays and the Tour de France, the whole family has had a lazy weekend... I needed to get out of the house for a walk, so a trip to the city seemed like a good idea.

A perfect evening for visiting a few more of the B&W sites I've not managed to get to yet. As always, entertaining and informative. And, given that Burke and Wills virtuals are such a big part of the GCA experience, appropriately my hundredth find.

Thanks, Geocaching Australia.

I was in the big smoke for a couple of days and the boss had let me come down the night before to avoid a very early flight, so what better to do the grab a couple of smilies around the hotel.

There were a couple of teenagers/20 somethins' nearby as I approached GZ but that didn't seem to mind.

A bit of a juggle but the camera was up to a lovely night time portrait.

1318km from home.
Out for a last day in Melbourne run, had a plan that lasted till the second cache then it was a matter of simply heading for the next nearest cache I hadn’t found. Eventually this led me here. Took a while to work out how to hold the phone (That I usually use to take photos and as a GPS) in one hand and the Blackberry tablet in the other hand to get all the requirements in the shot while caching alone
Didn’t leave our tag, took nothing but memories and left nothing but footprints (Not that anyone will see them on the footpath).

A nice location to visit.
Thanks for the cache Geocaching Australia.

I had a hour or so to kill in this part of town, so I wandered off to visit some waymarks & virtuals.
My first visit here was to the cache that the Society asked to be removed.

GCA 336 - 4663. Flew down to Melbourne for a friends party and a long weekend. Today was a good day to walk around the Burke & Wills Trail in the CBD.

Sixth 'find' today in this interesting series - a very historical building.

Out on our usual caching run with Trailrunning on Monday nights and today we were joined by The Physics Teacher to continue where we left off the last time at Altona. We headed west all the way to the edge of Weribbee caches and turned back and did the many caches back along the way to the city. We then headed to the city to get those done as Trailrunning and The Physics Teacher had not had those done yet but I have. On the way back, we tried to get a few more for The Physics Teacher to reach his 300 mark but we did not manage to. We brought him very close to his mark though.

The guys were doing the city caches, I popped here to get this virtual done. TFTC Smile

Another quick photo stop while on the trail of B&W caches.

Thanks again...

I had a meeting in town today, with a bit of time to spare, even after catching up with a friend for lunch. I always park under the new Museum and enjoy the walk down to the other end of Spring St and then back, via various routes. Today I decided to knock over a few B & W caches, to give me that caching hit. In the absence of my cover (juc_jr#2 who can fossick in bushes without raising suspicions), these provide an easy fix ! There were 3 on my route today and a few more left for the next meeting Wink This was the last, on my way back to the care at the museum.

Thanks for putting together this series and thanks to GCA for allowing "virtuals" for sites such as these.

I haven’t had a Monday night cache run for a couple of weeks so I was pretty eager at work to get going after knock off time. I initially headed west to the coast but after an early and unsuccessful start I moved into the city precinct where I knew I could bag a few finds to push me towards the 800 finds mark. I spent most of the night running between caches so I’m pretty tired, but I’m sure I have over the 800 now. This was one of the caches grabbed tonight, and although it was raining I’m sure I got about a strike rate of 90%. Thanks for the cache.

Found by Team Ladava with TEAMELBA to show them the nearby glacial boulder, subject of the now archived cache, before commencing a joint trek through the Melbourne General Cemetery.
Hard to believe this slightly neglected looking building once housed an association so influential and wealthy as to fund and direct this major expedition.
Our thanks to Geocaching Australia for the cache and especial caughtatwork for pulling it all together.
Cheers

Today I had a choice, I could sit in my cabin at Crib point, or I could head into the city and find some caches and waymarks. Heading into the city won out big time. After the 1 hour and 40 minute train ride I was set to go. With no plan other than to find 'next closest' on the Dakota 20, I meandered here there and everywhere. Part of my travels bought me to this place, where you get to see a horrible iPhone front facing pitcure of me!

Thanks for the history and the bit of Melbourne that you have shown me by brining me here and placing all of the info in the description. Quite interesting.

Cheers Cool

My First B&W Cache. I got a start of a cache nearby and had some time left on the parking meter so went in search of my first B&W cache. Great idea for a series of caches.

17-Dec-10
Found this cache on my first day in melbourne.

14-Nov-10
I replaced the cache container for the physical multi version of this B&W cache today (since it had been muggled by a possum), and decided I should do the virtual version while I was in the vicinity. It was good to have been involved in this B&W project as I learned so much history; I hope to complete an expedition or two to find some more of the resulting caches.

26-Oct-10
Grabbed this one today after finishing work today on my business trip to Melbourne and this is also my first B&W cache find. I love the old buildings in Melbourne and this (as I was to find out) was just my first excuse to visit some of them. TFTC

23-Oct-10
Now into hour 3 of expedition - weather bleak, provisions low, may have to return to civilization soon - 7th (geo)cache found.

I wonder what the Royal Society now does? I see they are commemorating the 150th anniversary of B&W - Seems appropriate.
See http://www.burkeandwills150.info/

Thanks B&W organisers - and the Royal Society for making it ALL possible!

03-Oct-10
A managed to get a carpark right outside - thought the National Trust plaque at the front steps would make for suitable evidence.

28-Sep-10
Went for a cycle around the CBD while in town for work. Thanks for the cache, photo to come when I get to some wifi or get home to my USB cable.

The Royal Society has a fabulous history of the promotion of scientific discovery.

19-Sep-10
The second of two B&W caches this afternoon to start our journey on this wonderful series. I used the new toy to get the photo at 17:20, but I guess phone cameras just aren't SLRs Surprised.

The B&W series has made for a very interesting read in relation to that fateful 'excursion' 150 years ago. I only hope that we can emulate Burke and Wills' travels one day soon using the cache series as a guide (but without the unfortunate ending of course Surprised).

Took pickie, left. Thanks Geocaching Australia.

I pulled up right beside today, jumped out the car and took a quick snap. Iphone was my gps. TFTC Very Happy

Flew in from Sydney early this morning to see the titanic exhibition the found this on our walk down to the hotel.

12-Sep-10
Phew nearly done! A long walk around the city picking up 18 caches in all including a number of B&W Virtuals. I love old buildings particulary well preserved ones like this. Cheers from Sydney.

I found this cache with caughtatwork today while we were hunting down the B&W caches around the city.

Found by caughtatwork at 15:06 on 12/09/2010
A place I visited while getting the B&W Project underway. If you get the chance to head inside, do so as the building has some fascinating history which you should get a lot closer to. A few quick pics from the outside for us today and we were away to another of the series.
Took nothing, left nothing.
Thanks to everyone involved in the B&W Project.

Found #17 I was collecting clues for another nearby cache (which had disappeared by the time I went for it) and took a picture here. I think this is actually one of the clues for that now defunct cache. With so many caches about and even intertwined it makes me go for these lunch time walks through the city streets and learn about buildings that I had never bothered to investigate before. A lovely walk through the city streets for this one. TFTC.

Ventured to this one with the kids, when it started to rain. We found a spot to get the photo.

It was good to put places to names in a book.

It was a rainy Saturday afternoon, a quick drive into the city to pick up some of the B&W virtuals was in order.

Found at the start of a good mornings caching. Thanks

22-Aug-10
We were here collecting the multi physical cache, so of course we couldn't miss the opportunity to grab this virtual while we were here. For this one we used the iPad, so included it in our photo, with the screen showing Geosphere in operation. A little bit nerdy, I know, but it works so well!

On the day of the Federal Election, along with Robyn of The Morris and Princess Diala, we voted to follow the B & W Party.
At the location of this virtual cache we were able to blend in with the regular tourists and capture a photo of Alice – The Ship of the Desert (SW0228) along with the GPS’r.
It was interesting to contemplate the contrast in scenery and activity 150 years on.

We had a great day wandering around the city completing the B&W caches, both traditional and virtual. Found in the company of Princess Diala, Phetlern and Alice.

I decided a long whilst ago that since I helped place this series, I would not be crazy and hunt for this series on the first day, instead work through the city caches during on the Saturday.

I've passed by here only a few times, but haven't really paid much attention to this building. Thanks to this anniversary series I stopped to have a look.

Many thanks for the Pheltern and The Morris for the company shared throughout the day.

20-Aug-10
Managed to get the morning off so we could do some of these B&W virtuals round the city. A very nice way to spend the morning even if it was quite cold.

20-Aug-10
Went back to the Royal Society of Victoria Building after finding the Multi cache nearby. See this building most days of the week. Close to the Gardens and Exhibition Building
