Description
This is a special Burke & Wills cache listed on Geocaching Australia.
This cache requires you to visit a Burke & Wills historical location and take a photo as described along with your GPS receiver and if possible yourself in the picture. Once you have logged this cache as a find, you are required to load your picture to your log to validate your find.
Validating Your Log
Take a picture of your GPS receiver and if possible yourself in front of The Royal Society building and attach it to your online log.
Important Information
The Burke Wills Historical Society notes: "The actual route Burke and Wills followed once they left Camp 78 is unknown and one of the most intensely debated issues. Wills' map and some of his journals containing astronomical observations have been lost. Because the journals have never been transcribed, it means the expedition's track north of the Diamantina, through the gibber rises, confused sand dunes and extensive claypans, is a matter for conjecture."
Travel in Outback Australia can be extremely hazardous. Plan your trip with care and seek and follow local advice on what precautions to take. Be aware of private property restrictions. Do not risk your life to log this geocache.
About This Location
This is the home on La Trobe Street of the Royal Society of Victoria, which originated the idea of the Victorian Exploring Expedition (VEE), as the Burke-Wills endeavour was originally called.
The committee in charge received 700 applications from would-be participants, and Burke interviewed 300 of them at the hall in just three hours on July 4, 1860 - then chose only people he knew.
Many planning sessions for the expedition took place at this hall, and as the day of departure approached, the men of the party signed a formal memorandum of understanding and heard a stirring farwell speech here, one of several given at various church and community-hall send-offs.

Thanks for the B&W
From this cache I was doing Burke and Wills caches and a couple of history caches as I passed them.
Requested image was taken and attached.
Thanks Geocaching Australia for the cache.
Another great Burke and Wills Virtual. I am currently reading a book on the Expedition, It's a great read.
Thanks **GEOCACHING AUSTRALIA**
TFTVC
Thanks Geocaching Australia.
This series helps me to go through the interesting points in the city of Melbourne, it's really appreciated.
Thanks Geocaching Australia for the cache and the history.
Cheers GCA
Thanks for the B&W series.
Between nights out celebrating birthdays and the Tour de France, the whole family has had a lazy weekend... I needed to get out of the house for a walk, so a trip to the city seemed like a good idea.
A perfect evening for visiting a few more of the B&W sites I've not managed to get to yet. As always, entertaining and informative. And, given that Burke and Wills virtuals are such a big part of the GCA experience, appropriately my hundredth find.
Thanks, Geocaching Australia.
GCA#100
There were a couple of teenagers/20 somethins' nearby as I approached GZ but that didn't seem to mind.
A bit of a juggle but the camera was up to a lovely night time portrait.

1318km from home.
Out for a last day in Melbourne run, had a plan that lasted till the second cache then it was a matter of simply heading for the next nearest cache I hadn’t found. Eventually this led me here. Took a while to work out how to hold the phone (That I usually use to take photos and as a GPS) in one hand and the Blackberry tablet in the other hand to get all the requirements in the shot while caching alone
Didn’t leave our tag, took nothing but memories and left nothing but footprints (Not that anyone will see them on the footpath).
A nice location to visit.
Thanks for the cache Geocaching Australia.

Discovering Australia and the World, one hidden treasure at a time.
My first visit here was to the cache that the Society asked to be removed.
Sixth 'find' today in this interesting series - a very historical building.
TFTC !!
The guys were doing the city caches, I popped here to get this virtual done. TFTC
Thanks again...
Thanks for putting together this series and thanks to GCA for allowing "virtuals" for sites such as these.
Hard to believe this slightly neglected looking building once housed an association so influential and wealthy as to fund and direct this major expedition.
Our thanks to Geocaching Australia for the cache and especial caughtatwork for pulling it all together.
Cheers

Thanks for the history and the bit of Melbourne that you have shown me by brining me here and placing all of the info in the description. Quite interesting.
Cheers
TFTC and the club.
I wonder what the Royal Society now does? I see they are commemorating the 150th anniversary of B&W - Seems appropriate.
See http://www.burkeandwills150.info/
Thanks B&W organisers - and the Royal Society for making it ALL possible!
The B&W series has made for a very interesting read in relation to that fateful 'excursion' 150 years ago. I only hope that we can emulate Burke and Wills' travels one day soon using the cache series as a guide (but without the unfortunate ending of course ).
Took pickie, left. Thanks Geocaching Australia.
A place I visited while getting the B&W Project underway. If you get the chance to head inside, do so as the building has some fascinating history which you should get a lot closer to. A few quick pics from the outside for us today and we were away to another of the series.
Took nothing, left nothing.
Thanks to everyone involved in the B&W Project.

It was good to put places to names in a book.

It was very wet and windy.
TFTC
It was a rainy Saturday afternoon, a quick drive into the city to pick up some of the B&W virtuals was in order.

On the day of the Federal Election, along with Robyn of The Morris and Princess Diala, we voted to follow the B & W Party.
At the location of this virtual cache we were able to blend in with the regular tourists and capture a photo of Alice – The Ship of the Desert (SW0228) along with the GPS’r.
It was interesting to contemplate the contrast in scenery and activity 150 years on.

I've passed by here only a few times, but haven't really paid much attention to this building. Thanks to this anniversary series I stopped to have a look.
Many thanks for the Pheltern and The Morris for the company shared throughout the day.
